I’m not sure where to begin with this, each time I watch this movie I fall more in love with it. But here goes, an attempt at an objectively review:
Quirky with some broad slapstick mixed with understated humor and an obvious love of the Universal and Hammer movies. The humor may not work for everyone, but you can’t fault the acting, cinematography, music or effects. Ferdy Mayne, Alfie Bass, Jack MacGowran… all wow! And Sharon Tate may not have…
I’m not entirely sure if this was a brilliant movie, or a just plain awful one. I love Christopher Walken but he acts as if he’s in a different movie from everyone else. He appears to be wearing eyeliner in some scenes, but not others. When an alien pops it’s head around a corner into his bedroom, he doesn’t miss a beat and simply shrugs his shoulders. Later on, he is throwing shapes with the aliens. His wife loses it…
Still got it after all these years. Not a single note of incidental music throughout the whole film but despite (or possibly because) of this it has some very tense moments. It also has some Hitchcockian shots, which is ironic as evidently Hitchcock saw this and was inspired to make Psycho.
