"You come from the future?"
"I come from the path behind you."
Could barely get through the last twenty minutes from all the tears. 🥹
A very sweet exploration of generational wounds that manages to successfully deliver a significant gut punch in such a short amount of time. It's cute but not overly saccharine as well as thoughtful and well paced. It makes the most of its limited set pieces and while not the most compelling child performances I've ever seen, still very memorable in how tender they were. Also a great example of saying a lot while saying very little. Loved it.
Lacks a lot of important context from the graphic novel, as many adaptations do, but is still great.
Some of the most traumatic beats from Marji's childhood are highlighted here, just without the extra context that makes them as upsetting as they should be. Many of the horrors don't land as appropriately heavy as they do in the novel because a lot of the people she bonded with as she grew up, and then subsequently lost to violence, are never…
The beginning feels really chilling, as if you're about to be in for something horrific. I think I set my expectations too high, anticipating some kind of obsessive energy and terrifying conclusion, but this film is very subtle. By the end I understood, but I just couldn't help…
I feel like people would be less harsh on this if it hadn't been Oscar nom'd. I thought it was an amusing peek into mundane life. The simple "dialogue" gave it a weird charm & I laughed out loud at the lady's long "Jáááááááá......" at the student butchering their music lesson.
