I'm convinced that one of the sound guys accidentally deleted all the dialogue and they had to ADR the entire movie to fix their stupid mistake.
]]>"Well, slotted pig, these are standard issue."
This film has to be regarded as one of the all time best sequels to any movie ever. Everything the first film did, this one turns up to 11. The writing is cleaner, the animation looks 4 times better, the voice acting really draws you in, and the song... man that song...

In the opening battle scene (and throughout) you can clearly hear his working idea for Pirates of the Caribbean (2003).

]]>"Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why."
I hadn't seen this film in 8 years, but knew that I had ranked it 8th on my This Golden Retriever Pup's Favourite Films list. My word does it live up to that ranking in every sense.
Let's start with the recent ing of Bernard Hill. I never really noticed his performance until this viewing, where he comes in alongside established characters and steals the show in EVERY scene he's in. The guys got presence, and I feel every emotion he's conveying. Top that with Viggo's Aragorn, Sean and Elijah's consistent chemistry and Sméagol (we'll get to him) this film has class in every corner. I'll leave my Aragorn talk for the next film, I have a lot to say, but just know that Two Towers forms the solid ground for just how brilliant of a character he is in all of cinema.
It's incredible how every department of this film hits it out of the park. Compare the editing of this film to The Last Jedi, where there is also 4 or 5 different locations and character stories being cut to. Where TLJ edit falters and leaves you cold out of the crucial elements of the story, The Two Towers effortlessly balances the characters, their individual quests and their battles whilst not tanking the pace of the film. We see Merry and Pippin the least but it is because their part of the story is slower and easier to comprehend, whereas we strongly follow Aragorn Legolas and Gillian's they chase down orcs, restore kings and protect the people of Rohan. What helps with keeping this edit streamlined are the narrative elements being tied together by the same characters (eg. the random family of two kids separated by their mother during the village attacks end up at Helms Deep and end up fighting). It flows seamlessly and makes 3 hours feel like 2.
The combat, the battles, the stunts, the weapon work, it's all top notch, but the VISUAL EFFECTS. There is something about early 2000s visual effects that seem to be timeless and perfect. The battle sequences look realistic, the background and environments look gorgeous and well realised, and Sméagol looks mostly stunning for technology they were inventing on the fly. Andy Serkis' audition for Gollum was the figurative 'lighting of the touch paper' for the future of cinema. If Peter Jackson had followed his original idea of fully CGI character with a voice actor these films would never have been as classic as they are, and motion capture wouldn't be as developed or as strong as it is today. We have this early collaboration of Jackson and Serkis to thank for this, along with such a compelling well written character.
Oh, and Howard Shore's music.... I could speak for an age of what these themes do to me, especially the Rohirrin theme that plays constantly whilst the party are in the heart of Rohan. This man put an entire world into his music and it never ceases to amaze.
It's hilarious to me how this film is so good, and yet it STILL isn't my favourite one. That one is coming... my king.
]]>"Mother, just because I wear trackies and play sport, does NOT MAKE ME A LESBIAN!" Is the best line ever delivered by Keira Knightley.
]]>Inside Out is one of my favourite animated films ever made (it fights Wreck It Ralph and Incredibles on a daily basis). There is a level of emotional catharsis that punches me in the stomach every time I watch that film, let alone every time I hear the first notes to 'Bundle of Joy'.
Inside Out 2 impresses, but falls marginally short of its predecessor. Having a different director, different characters, different vision and even a different composer (Michael Giacchino I miss you) did inject this film with some new life; however it seemed to lose some of the simple classic charm that the original possessed in spades. An entertaining and worthwhile story in its own right; just unfortunate that Inside Out 2 has to live up to the behemoth of the original.
Gotta hand it to Embarrassment; best character of the movie and he hardly spoke.
]]>Simple and effective. Shyamalan can be overly ambitious and miss the mark countless times, but here he sticks to his premise effortlessly and carves out a possibly one of the only concert thriller films in existence. Interchanging protagonists can be messy but for once M Night pulls it off. Nowhere near his best, but still solid.

This one is tough. Because despite the action being done really well, and despite Professor McGonagall being an absolute legend, this film falters at the end.
I can't stress how perfect the war of words finale was in the book; Harry and Voldemort circling each other in the Great Hall with everyone surrounding them, as Harry breaks down Voldemort using his tongue rather than any other weapon. Voldemort's constant retorts of "you dare-" being match by Harry standing up to his foe; "Yes, I dare". Harry exposing the flaws in Voldemort's vision, and how the Elder Wand could never harm Harry as he is the rightful master of the wand. Instead of this nuance dialogue brilliance, we get Hollywood Chad Harry Potter having fisticuffs with Voldy and tackling him off a building because reasons.
That being said, everything with Snape is perfect and magical. Knowing now that Alan Rickman nearly didn't take the role because he didn't want to be a villain, and then seeing this conclusion of the character is probably as emotional as this series gets. Neville gets his time to shine, Molly Weasley's one line steals the show, and Professor McGonagall's childlike "I've always wanted to use that spell" hits me in my core.
This film is enjoyable and a farewell to a strong 8 film saga. I only wish some moments had translated better from the page to the screen.
Also music is top notch Desplat rules

]]>The most un-Harry-Potter Harry Potter film of the lot.
This acts more as a road movie, and for large portions of it is a two-hander between Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, who have grown so perfectly into their roles by this stage. They and Rupert Grint carry all the drama perfectly, and they seem to honestly depict their own close friendship valiantly onscreen. The Hermione-Harry dance scene is an example of a perfect cathartic moment for the characters and for the audience.
The score by Alexandre Desplat is very muted (he feels almost underused here), but the scenery and lush soundscapes take Potter in the real world to a whole new level.
Dobby's return is triumphant and emotional and brutal and hilarious, however I strongly believe that the 8 year gap between cinema appearances did make his introduction and then ing less impactful than it could have been if he had been in other films in short bursts, like he was in the books. However he has the best scene in the entire franchise; Dobby casually undoing the chandelier above Bellatrix to then say "Dobby never meant to kill! Dobby only meant to maim or seriously injure!" What an absolute legend.
This film gives all the evil characters a space to shine; Ralph Fiennes is still warming up as Voldemort yet steals every scene he is in, Helena Bonham-Carter owns Bellatrix like no one else could, Jason Isaacs portrays Lucius in a way that shows he is scared and vulnerable, Alan Rickman knows Snape inside and out... the acting overall is just top notch.
Also the animated section is stunning and beautiful and perfectly captures the essence of a story within a story. If the book was not split into 2 films you know that we never would have had proper time to explore this tale, nor any of the other character moments in the film.
Some of the pacing is a little off, and I really feel like Desplat could have been utilised better, however this film reinvigorates the Potter world and displays it as a fugitive film, and it was a great breath of fresh air needed before the final act.
]]>The amount of disappointment I have in my friends right now is immeasurable. NONE of them have ranked this classic above 3.5 stars, and that should be a crime.
