Deadpool & Wolverine

2024

★★★★

Maybe it’s not high cinema or some shit but man, I laughed my ass off, the story wasn’t perfectly solid but it was solid enough, they used the multiverse in a way that works better than half the stuff Marvel has tried to do with it, and I had a ton of fun. Sure it could have been shorter but I don’t think there’s anything I’d want them to cut out. It’s a Deadpool movie, and as such it’s not entirely worried about logic, so honestly I don’t fault it for that. Honestly it felt like Reynolds and Jackman put their heart into it and I respect the hell out of them for somehow simultaneously spitting on Logan’s grave while honouring the absolute fuck out of it.

Sometimes I wonder how much the general public knows about what movies have been announced or cancelled or pushed off until their literal release date before being cancelled, but then I hear how many people in my theatre laughed at jokes about these things and I start to think “holy shit, a lot of formerly niche knowledge has entered the public consciousness.” But anyway there are plenty of references for fans of Marvel, no matter how deep or shallow your knowledge is. It’s one of those movies that encourages knowledge sharing rather than gate keeping. And I can’t abide that. I’m better than people that haven’t read a comic and I know it so eat shit.

JK folks, all fans are valid unless they’re bigots.

Also I went with a buddy that can be fairly critical of most movies, but the guy loved this, so that says a lot to me. Don’t go looking for a perfectly perfect film, go into this knowing it’s a Deadpool movie. Goofy fun that’ll make you laugh from people that give a fuck about what they’re making. Just because Disney owns it doesn’t mean they’re ruining it, it just means the limitations have changed.

I hope everyone has fun, genuinely.
