you know what after sitting on this i fear it was mid as hell

just as impressed with the first half, just as conflicted with its take

teased for the whole last 15 minutes that it was gonna be corny as hell and then absolutely refused to be corny as hell. so great!

full troll lars getting self reflective which is good and dandy but i do think i prefer when he takes swings at ideas bigger than… himself

real tough watch for people who hate joy

been a while since i’ve had a real good ole fashioned spook! unequivocally the scariest eggers t by a pretty wide margin imo. i know there’s some interesting stuff to dig into if you’d like but i kinda love the idea that eggers is just this guy who’s sick at making movies and fixated on a new piece of lore/media every couple years. sincerely wonder what he’ll do next

using this to log the entire director’s cut as one entire work. floored by some scenes in here. as usual, really gripped by the story even if it’s got some patented lars self-pats-on-the-back. i had some half baked idea about how reflective this whole character of seligman is of the overly analytical film watcher but then uh those last ten minutes threw a bit of a wrench into that. what sticks in my mind now is that there’s a very, very distinct gap between empathy/humanism and intellectual curiosity, even if they may appear similar from time to time. there’s a difference between listening to a story and picking apart and metaphorizing a story. as ironic as it is to say after blathering on in three separate reviews about this five and a half hour entanglement, i’m gonna choose to do the former

the highs are nearly as high as volume 1, but not quite as consistent. judging these as two separate entities i think this is the weaker of the two, but also it’s a real “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts” kind of situation. also i’m not EXACTLY sure which shots and scenes are in the director’s cut that i just watched but not the theatrical cut, but god damn right up there with the most grueling scenes i’ve ever seen

director’s cut but taking a break between the two for my own sanity and cus i’m hungry. this dude definitely does get a little ridiculous with the metaphors but wow i’d be lying if i said some of these segments weren’t incredibly engaging and more complex than expected… mrs. h i’m lookin at you. will report back again in several hours

absolute all timer for people who like movies which function like the easiest crossword puzzle you’ve ever played before but with an absurdly large answers page which isn’t even flipped upside down or obscured or anything and you can’t finish the crossword puzzle until you recognize this answers sheet and compare it to your own just to make sure the words you found were in fact the ones the crossword puzzle was hoping you found. 

god. one hugh grant and some nice shots away from igniting a mormon conversion. shockingly after all of this it was pretty fun to watch tho. but man these dudes are on indefinite timeout
