This is not Oscar bait! It’s really great. It’s beautifully shot, contains powerhouse performances and deep themes, but it lacks the self seriousness that ruins “prestige” film. 

At the core of the film is a page turner of a script that plays more as mystery or thriller than drama. It’s a real “film” and also a real “movie” that breathes and allows moments of humor and unexpectedness to break the drudgery, while controlling the literally sequestered world of the movies…

A fantastic B minus of a movie if I ever saw one! Nothing really bad about it, nothing really amazing either… except for the out of this world cast that carry this one. Also Mary Louise Parker is my forever crush.

EP1: Excellent.

This is a well shot and told true crime doc that interweaves Michelle McNamara’s life and her hunt for the golden state killer. Simultaneously a look into the soul of a detective and at one of the most brutal crime sprees in modern American history.

A great film that will make you ask some tough questions if you are an American Jew. You may recognize your community, your own internal struggle, or the struggles of another people as you watch it. 

I think the rhetorical structure of this doc is especially strong in that it sets the stage and shows the opposing perspective up top and gives voice to the emotional reality of where those making pro-occupation arguments are coming from.
