Alex Garland on his movie: “I want to make a film about journalists where journalists are the heroes.”

Alex Garland’s movie: *what if every journalist you meet is devoid of character detail, morally disengaged, and just kind of an awful person*

I want to preface this review by saying I liked this film in chunks, particularly ones that occurred in the first half. Overall, however, I would say this was an engaging film in the sense that the anticipatory thought…

The Battle of Algiers

1966

★★★★★ Liked Rewatched

The only film that understands, expresses, and effectively sells an audience on violence as an objectively effectual tool of self-defense for the oppressed against the oppressor—its casualties not as a contradiction of humanity but as its inevitable byproduct when placed under threat. Bring Her Back

2025

★★½ Watched

Marginally more memorable than Talk to Me but was still left with the same lingering question: “Okay, cool, sick, gnarly… but what was the point exactly?”
Also the Philippous desperately need to hire a real cinematographer and quit hiring whoever this damn YouTube videographer is ‘cause the wide open f/1.4 Rec.709 look on a shotlist comprised almost entirely of handheld ECUs isn’t cutting it in 2025, sadly. Second movie in a row where their most interesting shots feel specifically designed just to be included in the trailer and bear no resemblance to the rest of the film’s visual palette.

“I feel nothing.”

🚨The Russo Brothers have officially infiltrated A24 🚨
Was expecting this to sort of be A24’s No Way Home, but was not expecting this to also be A24’s Free Guy, Deadpool, and The Lego Movie.
I feel like talking way too much shit against this movie, but this movie already made me feel like shit enough to not want to spend anymore time writing about it or expelling that onto others who’ll genuinely connect with this thing.…

Do the Right Thing

I don't this being South Korean. Must be the Mandela effect.
