Best Video Machine

Brutal, disturbing, graphic, and legitimately scary at times, but this was way better than I was expecting because of its reputation.
It’s dark and grimy and low budget, but it all works in this movie’s favor. We’re essentially trapped inside a psychotic mind that’s spiraling worse and worse. Maniac doesn’t glorify its slasher, it makes him into a terrible but also pitiful person, subject to his uncontrolled broken mind.
Of course, Tom Savini’s effects are insane and disturbingly realistic, adding to the film’s darkness. It’s the kind of movie you can’t enjoy, but I thought it was terribly effective in what it was working to create.
