a LOT to unpack. Though some aspects of the film don’t appeal entirely to me, this is one of the most comprehensive and uncompromising long form explorations of what it means to be a young person today within the particular kind of queer, Black culture the film refers to. Perhaps my high rating is indicative of this being the opening night film at the first film festival I’ve ever been lucky enough to have a to, let alone attend, but I feel certain that Dreams in Nightmares serves as a crucial marker of our current moment.
