It’s taken me a few days to review bc there was something so unusual about this project that I can’t really identify. I say project bc the format of this movie is atypical even for ensemble cast narrative structures. The dialogue & demeanor of the characters are equally as unfamiliar, sometimes almost lychian. As if the words being spoken are wholly symbolic, not meant to be taken as literal conversation. Something very captivating about that. & performances were just fantastic.
Going on my rewatch list so I can get a bit closer to the characters. Especially holly hunter’s, rebecca, who is the queen of stoic self-flagellation, cornering herself into pitiless relationships and choosing to undergo a surgical abortion all by her lonesome, which proves itself to be more physically painful & emotionally taxing than she’s able to stomach.
This was always gonna be right up my alley & then the puppets made their entrance, rendering me absolutely giddy. We <3 teri garr to outer space and back
]]>Heavy on fulfilling character development & definition. and heavy on a memorable, glistening soundtrack. Lightweight when it came to lore… ? Surprising given the fact this is a historical piece featuring one of the most lore-laden creatures to ever exist. I loved the action but I think there was plenty of room for richer, deeper conversation. As it stands, the dialogue either 1. contributed beautifully to the notable & aforementioned characters or 2. seemed to awkwardly stand in the way of some pressing curiosities around just how & why these incredible events were taking place. But I am still just so struck (positive connotation), especially by the midway dance scene that blended so many different eras, people, & styles into one moment. That’s art !
]]>Biased bc of personal nostalgia. I recognize that it’s nowhere near as good as fantasia, but I still adore this tottering, vibrant, puritan vision. Prepare urself for ludicrous disrespect to indigenous ppl & a lot of lumbering around musically. But if u can lock into the era, lock into the joy, then u can lock into the masterpiece.
]]>super weird vibes but in a joyous way. The songs were not bad & that’s coming from someone who usually can’t tolerate musicals.
]]>felt so long. & for what
]]>High quality. I was never a big spongebob fan so I didn’t expect to enjoy the humor as much as I did but it was just such a fun little romp I was giggling the whole way thru.
]]>If only there was an app where I could discuss the performance & appearance of jeremy renner in the bourne legacy (2012) with other fans
]]>This three-pronged project (album, movie, documentary) will go down in history as one of the most lucid looks into the narcissism & delusion of celebrity. Ok maybe not history at large, but me & my friends’ history for sure.
Watching the beautiful jlo push herself to physical & mental limits for this opaque vanity production will make u roll ur eyes harder than u ever thought possible but also sympathize w her plight more than u ever thought possible. Not for the reasons that she is attempting to demonstrate, but just bc of how transparent her true pain is (false sense of control, desperation to evolve without the patience required for lasting change) & all the ways that she continues to claw at her wounds despite screaming into the void that she is Healed.
I would like to remind everyone that there is a whole other intimate documentary about jlo that came out in 2022 so when she persistently asserts that this is the world’s first look into her trials & tribulations, that is false. I also would like to remind everyone that her & benny boy divorced within a year of this project’s release. Pitiful across the board.
I appreciate this documentary for its close eye on jlo’s pathology but I also appreciate jane fonda & jennifer lewis’s appearances, both of whom provided quick nuggets of wisdom that jlo can only dream of comprehending at this point. As jlew puts it: “the prize for aging is wisdom. & wisdom feels good.” Let’s hope that our jenny from the block can recoup from this ugly endeavor of the ego & bounce back to win that prize.
]]>To be fair this is the one & only mr bourne flick that I have seen. But when my parents told me it was good action I didn’t expect so much time spent in offices & on cell phones. Also just hated the camera work like can u stand still for one second so I can actually see wtf is going on. I did respect the cap on violence tho they didn’t use the assassin focus as an excuse to go way overboard on blood torture etc the way many other variants tend to do.
]]>had to show my sister
]]>FUNNY. & sweet. & jewish. Made me realize just how lacking we are in well developed elderly characters. Anyone who is close to an old person knows how others tend to infantilize them & see their loss of functioning before their character. My bubbe is a lifelong activist, actually hilarious, overly protective, & brimming w amazing yiddish phrases and curses, but she also has parkinson’s. So sometimes ppl talk to her like she’s a fucking 5 year old. & I love how this movie handled that topic.
]]>Guys I went on a trip to Poland exactly like this, it was so crazy to be able to revisit it on the screen w these boys. Majdanek broke my soul in a way that I’ve never been able to explain. That tension between trying not to dismiss ur own pain while being crushed under the mind blowingly massive pain of the holocaust is so real. I think this movie was probably a more novel & meaningful experience to goys tho it didn’t really do much for me other than getting to see those landmarks again.
]]>David lynch so it’s unlike anything else. We’re so starved for originality these days I’m starting to value that above any other component.
I someone expressing the sentiment that David lynch seems to understand & appreciate women’s suffering in a depth far beyond other directors and I agree.
Star deducted bc it was wayyy too long & the camera quality was a shade too shitty for me lol
mostly just gross. A lot started to wear on me very quickly, especially the sound effects. I love stop motion as an art form so I was excited about this but it was hard to enjoy anything between the constant ickiness & distractingly disted scenes.
]]>literally who cares
]]>I’m a sinister motherfucker too
]]>I forgot to log this. I felt the exact same about it as I did the first. Very good.
]]>All the elements here were a siren call 2 me- supernatural period piece w majority ladies including the incomparable sarah paulson. So then why was it so forgettable ?….
]]>This started off so dismal (millie bobby brown attempting dialogue) then transformed into a semblance of something I like (survival horror) & then gave us a nauseating finale (mbb strutting smugly away from a fiery explosion). And why did she have a smoky eye & acrylics………..
]]>I knew I would get really into this & I did. Had a lot of wikipedia pages open bc of words & references I didn’t recognize, which I guess could potentially be seen as tedious to have to do, but I don’t really mind if I’m just adding another layer of richness to an independently cohesive narrative. U just get so sucked into the world u want to know every detail of what’s going on. Ty to my catholic friends who contributed so much to the viewing experience I recommend watching this w at least 1 catholic
]]>had to show my sister
]]>There was more than enough here to keep me interested and entertained & it really hit the sweet spot on scares to lore ratio, which will secure its place in my “comfort horror” folder.
]]>One of my all time faves. It’s so funny and freaky and thrilling. The dialogue is pristine but the acting takes it to a whole new level, this is jason schwartzman in his truest form- somehow nailing an exact Type of Guy while bringing a surreal amount of absurdity. A duplass brothers t if I ever saw one.
]]>Usually I’m game for a long genre mix of a ride but something about the push & pull between horror and indie just kind of fails here. There were so many moments I was pulled out of a good scare by a prolonged camera shot & so many beautiful prolonged camera shots that I was pulled out of by something that made my stomach lurch. Still, I was charmed by a lot especially anna cobb the lead and the achievement of a “dark internet” vibe that doesn’t feel wildly out of touch w actual internet culture.
]]>They really look like a younger mike & sully that’s crazy
]]>No shade but my sister & I came up w better parodies than this sitting on our living room carpet w a camcorder in 2006
]]>so fucking funny
]]>I just really loved the mood. The toy itself scared the shit out of me. Elijah wood was stellar. Theo james was a gentler, hotter james franco. I honestly could’ve bumped this rating even further up if the last 15 mins had been stronger.
]]>Would u guys have a threesome with ur bf & his duplicate ? I’ll go first, yes
]]>Kurt Russell STUNS
]]>We all know it we all love it
]]>A very real & beautiful ode to children who have issues w emotion regulation and impulse control. Unfortunately this is just a book that can’t be animated in the style that was chosen, it feels like a profound transgression. I absolutely hated looking at it
]]>The most british it could possibly be including some really weird racial politics.
This was the last time they would let a leading man be balding. We’ve lost so much.
🚨🚨🚨 dead ringer john lennon impersonator
Come on coats !!!!!!!!!!
]]>I was feeling lukewarm about this movie until I realized it was explicitly Jungian & demonstrating the power of the collective unconscious, & the consequences of denying or attempting to mutilate such a power. I also really loved the final scenes. Worth watching.
“You believe in metaphysics if it proves you’re special?”
]]>I love good folk horror but it’s also a genre w a lot of duds like this. I really didn’t like anything about this movie other than the general theme. It’s crazy how something set so rural & w no pregnancy could rip off rosemary’s baby so hard.
I wish there had been more bizarre & disturbing scenes like when the possessed old lady pissed herself, that maybe could’ve added an extra half star. & definitely less head-scratching scenes like when we learned that if u bitch slap a small, possessed child she will immediately come to her senses & explain lore to you.
To be fair I also just don’t like many movies where christians are unequivocally the good guys. This one is certainly included.
If anyone has good folk horror recs pls lmk
]]>The way they capitalize on the production value is truly something to behold, & for that I give the bigwigs over at Dune Inc a round of applause. Did I become emotionally invested in any way ? No. But I was charmed by some of the complexities displayed between characters & the acting was airtight. I do have some stylistic gripes (why did the fremen’s eyes have to be edited like that), but felt such an overall sense of wonder at the environment that it would feel nitpicky to list them. Dune 2 is waiting wearily for me.
]]>It’s true that the entire thing is saved by the editing but it’s a very strong force. Even tho just about everything else had serious issues, it was still an enjoyable watch thanks to the editing. Other highlight is lee harker I loved her as a kind of final girl, it’s a well-deserved win & uniquely devastating to witness. She definitely tipped me over the edge into liking this movie. Last note is that I need to read more about the transphobia discourse bc I thought I would come away w an opinion about it but I reached zero conclusions.
]]>Very stylish. Very well choreographed. Leans a bit too much on character tropes like every other 90s movie.
“I’m guided by a force much greater than luck.”
]]>I loved the animation in this, specifically the contrast between how the characters vs the landscape were illustrated, & having a woman focused storyline is always welcome, especially in these stiflingly male dominated genres. However (& this could be a personal preference), if I had to list out my fave things about lotr, the detailed history surrounding warring human factions would not even break the top 10. I want the fantasy, I want the whimsy, & I want it amped up even more if we’re doing something animated. One orc sighting is not gonna cut it for me, sorry.
]]>Look, this was obviously never going to be good BUT I was hoping it was going to be bad but still fun like the divergent series. Incorrect ! This was already a mid book series that even 11 yo me clocked as being mid. In hindsight I was queer baited into reading the whole thing. Netflix did not even provide this fodder for us, leaving us lethally starved for an even remotely realistic level of butch. So fuck every single coward over there that did this to us.
]]>Everyone was like “here’s who I am, what I’m doing, & my entire backstory.” I’m gonna stand firm & say the best thing about this movie is all the aaron taylor-johnson edits that came out of it
]]>This would be perfect in every way if it wasn’t for vincent gallo’s own repulsiveness. The sentiment that u can’t separate the art from the artist is on full display here. His narcissism & need to objectify keeps what should’ve been an extraordinary film weighed down in a disappointingly shallow pool. & I’m just left w the feeling that therapy & some perspective-taking could’ve saved him, his victims, & his art.
]]>& if I say this is my favorite out of the entire franchise ? What then ?
]]>Gorgina
]]>I’m watching them backwards bc whatever I can do what I want. U guys there was a dick joke in here. Final thought is that this whole filmography is just one mammoth lengthed ment for new zealand’s tourism industry
]]>Not as fun as when they’re all gallivanting together but there’s almost nothing as fun as when they’re all gallivanting together so what are u gonna do 🤷♀️
]]>I liked how clear it was that they’re all just huge losers. & I also liked when jon favreau cried tears of joy & relief when he finally made a genuine romantic connection.
]]>It’s always sad to see some genuinely funny stuff get so watered down by such standard procedure misogyny
]]>sci fi movies that feature some kind of law enforcement/military presence
