Perfectly adequate. Doesn't navigate the PED discussion particularly well (McGwire sorta surprisingly is the most intelligent and reflective of everyone) and has way too much Maris Jr.

But also it does capture a certain moment and era of the sport which, as much as MLB and the HoF try to shove it down an oubliette, was foundational for a generation of fans.

One of those things where I can't help but compare this to both other takes on Macbeth and Kurosawa's other takes on Shakespeare. It's very good but not my favorite in both departments.

The film looks fantastic though with all that fog* and the sense of being lost/confused both physically and mentally. It's such an important character note in that explains so much of what tips Macbeth into madness.** Isuzu Yamada is also fantastically creepy as the real ambition behind it all.

*I kind of want to rewatch Hedgehog in the Fog now.

**I love Slings and Arrows lost Macbeth understudy take.

A feast for the eyes in of the colors, contrast, lighting, and texture. Also a very well-acted and, for the first two thirds or so, extremely taut and crisp piece which manages to make all the discussion and intrigue not only interesting but engrossing.

And then there's the final act which feels like a different movie collided with the production. Still some beautiful scenes and dialog but it really feels like it lost faith in what it was doing and panicked about not having a proper ending.

Bumped this up to five stars after sitting with it a bit. It's so elegantly directed that it feels deceptively lightweight and breezy.  And it definitely those things in a feel good way. But it is also able to acknowledge and address the seriousness of the emotions that the characters are going through without moralizing or going melodramatic.

It's a stroke of brilliance to craft parallel stories of the daughter, mom, and grandmother as they all have to contend with the newfound independice that comes when a child gets older and you're forced to figure out who you are beyond just the familial relationship. All three actresses are more than up for the task with Rachel McAdams and Abby Ryder Fortson in particular turning in fantastic natural performances where they communicate so much without having to say a word.

Lots of fun to watch with the kids and see them see themselves. And lots of fun to recognize my current experiences as a latent in there too.

Kind of a weird one to rewatch. Last time I watched this was over 25 years ago when the Wes Anderson™️ brand was new fresh and exciting and we still thought that sociopaths could be redeemed.

Now? The freshness has been replaced by how fun it is to see the seeds of what Anderson would become. And it's much much less interesting to see a man and a boy fighting over who gets to possess a woman. So yeah while there are lots of things I still enjoy there's a lot more which I don't.

The soundtrack though is of the best of the era which did soundtracks better than any other era.

Didn't plan to watch this in memory of Hackman since we picked this up for cheap at the used record store months ago and only just got around to watching it. But it works out that was since he's an absolute joy here playing a pretty horrible character yet manages to make Royal into a charming funny sympathetic guy.

Fun to revisit this in general as it's been quite a long time since I last watched it. Really interesting to watch now given how twee Anderson has gotten in the ensuing decades. While this is unabashedly a cartoon, it still has one foot in reality and wonderfully subtly underplays the over-the-topness of everything.

Also this is one of those movies where the score lives deep inside me and I know the musical cues better than I know the script.

Hard for this to be bad given the inherent drama in the games themselves. But the way the game footage is edited feels like it's trying to copy the way movies are edited around actors being unable to play the sport. 1. Totally gonna treat this as a prequel to Home Alone and how the McAllisters met.

2. Holy moly does Scorcese direct the hell out of this. Such an active camera which contributes so much to the sense of suspense and absence of control. You're put on notice with literally the first shot of the film and then at the end under the credits the literal last shot is even more audacious.

3. Love the idea of the "Yuppie Nightmare Cycle" as a defining theme of the 1980s. Couple it with the "stuck in the city and can't get out" genre and you've got a perfect description of how the cities felt to suburban America.

4. Super grateful that for being a "stuck in the 'wrong' neighborhood" film it never went for racist or homophobic jokes or stereotypes.

Absolutely nails the feelings of being 13 and that sense of being unmoored amidst all the changes of adolescence which make you uncomfortable with who you are and who you want to be and who you don't want to be and how that can change at any given moment.

Such a magical age which is simultaneously the best time and the worst time of your life. At its best you have independence from all obligations—college and jobs are still an abstract thing—while being responsible enough to free-range and go out on your own with your friends and your own money. At its worst your brain and anxiety is all in hyperdrive freaking out about your inexperience and awkwardness and how to deal with navigating how you feel and fit in socially when you haven't figured out how it fits in on you personally.

Add in issues of assimilation and race in America and yeah it's a lot. Even in a majority-minority city the performative nature of race and everything is lurking behind everything.

I love the way Sean Wang is able to populate this film with such a large diverse cast of young actors. A lot of these types of films miss the energy of kids in large groups and instead revert to the usual jock/nerd/etc stereotypes rather than understanding how real kids talk and behave.

I also love how deeply seated this is in not just the Bay Area but Fremont in particular. I knew, immediately, where this was set and how centered it was on that location and it absolutely made me miss home. It's also worth noting that it does a similarly fantastic job capturing the nascent social media world when MySpace and Facebook were not just competitors but class markers and instant messenger apps like AIM and ICQ were the lifeblood of social groups.

Generally great and frequently fantastic albeit potentially too clever for its own good. But overall a really smart meta-narrative about the ways that race on this country works and how stereotypes and performance/presentation are two sides of the same coin.

Performances are great and there's a lot of rich detail that pays off long term. Unfortunately it doesn't quite stick the ending. I waver between dinging it for this or leaning into the meta-brilliance of how leaving things open for another season is really the perfect commentary on the futility of it all.

Kind of a masterclass in quiet natural acting where everyone is just so damn good. This almost feels like an inside job which is made for prisoners to recognize themselves and their humanity. The direction is never over the top and instead understands that in a prison, natural light and the fresh air it accompanies is the strongest metaphor for freedom that you need.

Just because this is funny doesn't make it a comedy. Very self-assured in what it's doing and very smart about understanding where humor comes from and how it can work as a shield for grief and despair. Lots of heavy shit both at a world level and a character level but the humanity shines through regardless.

A visual treat with loads of small subtle jokes and Easter eggs in every scene. The animation looks simple but not only perfectly references the book but conveys way more information and emotion than expected.

And a wonderful poignant story of love and loss and realizing how much the act of loving someone is in seeing them be happy.

Quietly fun and funny. You know its good because even though it knows exactly where to end things it also feels way too early because you just want to spend more time with the three of them.

The poster child for the Gene Siskel test and a textbook example of something failing to measure up to the sum of its parts. This is the romcom version of the way a lot of Michael Mann films consist of fantastic action sequences which make zero sense as part of a larger narrative. Many cute vignettes and enjoyable moments. No connective tissue involving either plot or character to get us invested.

So yeah, basically a collection of discarded Richard Curtis script ideas which instead of being fleshed out into decent films have been mushed together into an incoherent mess that, aside from Bill Nighy and Emma Thompson who manage to salvage something from their roles, wastes a lot of my favorite actors on nothing plots and two dimensional characters.

Fun to revisit this close to 30 years after I last watched. In many ways I'm tempted (that Jackie Brown exists is why I'm only tempted) to say this is my favorite Tarantino because he's not getting high on his own supply yet.

Super crisp and super cool and practically a one-act play just taking place in the warehouse.

Stealing an idea from Arlo. One movie which was especially important to me at ages 5, 10, 15, 20, etc.

  • The Red Balloon

5—I've kind of conflated watching this movie with reading the book. The childlike wonder of having a pet ballon, the cruelness of the bully boys, and the ultimate beauty in the ending have always stuck with me.

  • The Adventures of Baron Munchausen

10—I was a weird 10-year-old. I had already grown out of Disney. I wasn't into things like Young Guns like all my classmates. But I do, still, watching Baron Munchasen in the theater and having it blow my mind.

  • His Girl Friday

15—I ended up going deep into Classic Hollywood when I was in high school. Having the Stanford Theatre up the road meant I got exposed to everything on the big screen. And while it was fun to see things like Robin Hood or the Philadelphia Story, His Girl Friday was ridiculously funny and smart and stood out above everything else.

  • The Third Man

20—I went down the noir deep end while I was in college. This was helped by a major noir festival at the Stanford Theatre (including the director's cut of Big Sleep), the release of LA Confidential, a class I took in school, and the rerelease of Third Man and Touch of Evil. Of all of them though Third Man is my favorite. Looks beautiful. Music is perfect. And it's the right mix of bittersweet and gritty.

  • All About My Mother

25—With Spirited Away, this was probably my favorite movie which came out during my early 20s. It's also a large reason why I went to Barcelona for my honeymoon.

  • Three Times

30—Subtle and beautiful. I'd not seen anything like this before and, until Moonlight, nothing like it afterwards. I was going on by-director deep dives on Netflix and while I was possibly binging too much in that I began to forget a lot of the movies I saw, this one left an indelible impression.

  • My Neighbor Totoro

35—After becoming a parent my moviewatching got curtailed tremendously. But Totoro was always there for us.

  • Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

40—Love this as a print geek. Love this as an animation geek. Love this as a movie to watch with my kids. Love this as a movie to watch by myself.

  • Le Samouraï

45—One of the fun parts of being 45 was having my eldest hit movie appreciation age and we were lucky enough to get to see this on the big screen in town. Wonderful to be reminded how good it is. And wonderful to see him realize how lucky he was to see it in the theater.
