He knew what was going on and realized through her sadness that whatever it was is over and he was so thankful that she chose him. Because the alternative would have been too much for him to handle. She probably got over it pretty quick after that too when she realized just how perceptive her husband was and how much he loved her and forgave her. Very very powerful ending.
