]]>If you liked the later two Wick Flicks, you’ll at least be entertained by Ballerina. But Armas is not nearly as fun of a lead as Reeves was, and is basically being slotted in as “Girl John Wick” rather than anything unique or interesting as a new character.
And on top of that, totally lame to bring Wick back. They have him show up and beat Eve up to make sure you know he’s still actually way stronger/better than her and have some cool moments, kind of like they wanted you to how cool their OC was lol. And then ending the film with a setup that’s basically John Wick 2 but Eve instead further cements the “knockoff Wick” characterization to me. Really ruins the solid sendoff they made for Wick in the fourth film.
Also, kind of an ironic end for John to end up back in the clutches of the Roma as the Baba Yaga, considering the villain’s whole “fate and being chosen to be a killer” talk was supposed to be antithetical to Eve’s choices, or rather the idea that we all have a choice. So after all that, John’s choice is to go back to work.

]]>I think this one constitutes as a film that's mean. Nasty, grisly, and suspenseful. The Philippou brothers continue to impress and find a way to get under my skin and make me squirm. They make use of every beat, keeping the script lean but each piece always relevant.

]]>We just didn’t wanna hire anyone to make the clothing or hair/makeup period accurate? Boring, bad writing, and a step below the other 3 movies in this Netflix franchise. At least the kills were fun!

]]>All in all, a proper blockbuster that holds your attention start to end. There are a couple glaring issues that are holdovers from Dead Reckoning, but Cruise really does go all in on delivering a special viewing experience.

]]>Great, simple teen slasher with enough going for it to make it stand out. Feels like a movie a pre-teen would see at a sleepover and be just scary enough to get them into the genre.
It’s most interesting story hooks were severely under-developed, but I hope we see more of Friend-o

]]>The script is rough at points, but Josh Hartnett is having a good time and the fight choreography was fun to watch. Some really good understated jokes too, much funnier when they’re not going too over the top

]]>Honestly should’ve leaned more into the hyper violent, Sin City-esque comic book action sooner. Could’ve been something really stylized that saves the insanely inconsistent script

]]>Incredibly tense from start to finish. Visceral and raw and, for most of it, truly tries to capture the horrific experience of war. However, despite the incredible production pieces at play, from the soundscape to the set design, Warfare is a fetishized, maybe even insidious piece meant to invoke sympathy for people who were the oppressors.
I heavily disagree with people who say it’s an unbiased depiction, and that it operates with an “absence of moral question” until the end, because it doesn’t. It opens with a scene meant to endear you to these soldiers whose names you’ll probably not even know when you leave the theater and feels directly in contrast with the point of all the chaos, the brutality, and lack of understanding the film provides. It’s been likened to Black Hawk Down quite a bit, probably based on a surface level similarity in its portrayal of combat, but also still operates on a level of propagandic messaging that I thought they were trying to avoid. All of the chaos simply ends as the Bradley tanks roll away, and I felt this pit in my stomach grow & began to think “what was it all even for?” just to immediately move into the end title cards and BTS/likeness photos that prop up the story as a heroic undertaking.
Depicting a war that I think has been identified by most as a pointless one, where the U.S. shouldn’t have been in the first place, with a manufactured sense of patriotism that lured people into g on, is a lot harder to garner sympathy for than previous war films. It’s an interesting contrast to explore against films that depict the Vietnam War, with a similar distaste for the U.S.’s presence there but with stories of soldiers forced into duty. Warfare doesn’t have that benefit, and I’m curious how the future generations will explore and discuss the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in the medium.

]]>“Chisolm. Do I know that name?”
“You should know it from your obituary.”
The emphasis on real locations, stunt and fight coordination, and a few banger lines like the one above make for a good time from start to finish. Denzel can’t help but turn in a good performance. The music at times felt tonally dissonant, almost too whimsical or adventurous for the scenes playing out in the first half. The secondary & background characters have very little to do or say, but there’s honestly not much more the primary protagonists bring either. The plot stays pretty surface level & lacks the depth in this remakes’ prior remakes’ inspiration. Very curious to see the 1960 version now and hold these two up side by side in front of Seven Samurai.
]]>Nobody could bring this much aura to a gunfighter riddled with TB on-screen like Kilmer did, one of the best to ever do it.

]]>I think a lot of what others praise about this falls flat, overall, and felt pessimistic by the end. All these guys make it pretty clear they’re only connected by a (supposedly) mutual love of the game, but don’t seem to have any drive to pursue their human connection beyond this field. With a lot of half-stated remarks and digs about inter-personal beefs and who’s at fault for the end of their games together that go nowhere, nothing explored and nothing gained, the guys drift off and move on. There’s really a great collection of a cast, filled with unique personalities and faces that were entertaining the whole way through. I just wish I cared a little more about them and sympathized with the loss of their past-time.
]]>Absolutely carried on Fred Hechinger’s shoulders. Overall very funny, but flimsy side characters and motivations for said characters. Very messy middle act that pulls together for a decent payoff.

]]>Statham handily carries this, but dear god is it overwritten. So many characters/elements introduced that just kind of peter out or maybe show up for a moment in the final set piece. And they really get lost in the middle during Statham’s character’s “investigation.”
