Simultaneously epic, confusing, and an existential mindfuck. It had me asking the question: What if David Lynch made an anime in the same vein as Gundam?

It’s hard to come to with what this film is. Does this ending contradict the TV series ending? End of Evangelion gives a lot of context to the tv ending, and that helps me to appreciate both endings more (a bit confusing I know).

I really don’t watch a lot of anime, so I’m not the best judge when it comes to the genre, but I enjoyed how surreal this was. I’m excited to check out the rebuilds.

I watched this to finally see End of Evangelion which for a long time I've seen hailed as one of the all time greats when it comes to animation. I enjoyed this for what it was, but it got a bit tiresome when almost every episode was, "Oh no, another angel is here, we must attack it!" Followed by a large scale battle that went on for a short amount of time. I kind of wish there had been more of a build up or explanation to what was so significant about the angel they were fighting.

The sexual innuendos were a bit weird, but the show is centered around a teenager, so I think that was the point of it. I was also more invested in the characters than I was the EVA/angel subplots, and like everyone else usually says, the final two episodes go into wtf territory.

Not really what I was expecting from a Scorsese film, and maybe that's the problem. The theme of questioning one's faith has been seen time and time again, but I just had a hard time feeling it with Andrew Garfield, which is odd, because I like most of the films he's in.

I did like the final act of the film was good with the test of keeping the faith, or rejecting it to save the lives of others. I also felt that Liam Neeson's character was the best part of the film, which is a shame since he didn't have much screen time.

A great looking war film, but I would be lying if I said I didn't prefer the original. I think the look and feel of the original just a more authentic take of World War 1 to it as it was made between World War 1 and World War 2. There are scenes in this that will stick with me, but I took more from the anti-war messaging in the original. I hate to keep comparing this to the original, but I couldn't help but to keep doing that as I watched this.

For Studio Ghibli standards, this is pretty tame and less weird in regards to the types of characters. I have to give it up for the cast simply for the fact that the majority of the actors were playing themselves, which had to be a bit of a trip for an actor. I ultimately loved what the film was setting out to do and to show that just because you're in prison, it doesn't mean you can't enjoy the arts as well.

It did seem to feel like prison was a bit like theater camp, which I don't believe it was setting out to do, and as beloved of a film as this was, that's how I felt. The struggles of being in prison and putting on a performance have to be tough, and I couldn't imagine the amount of emotions they would go through to have to do that. Especially when it involves Freddy Krueger and Captain Hook.

After seeing Tom Green live just last night, I was made aware that a documentary not only existed, but it came out this year, so I knew I had to watch it. It seems as though Tom Green is having a bit of a revivalist year, and I am all for it!

It was a bit surreal to see him in the flesh though, and it was even weirder when we made eye and asked me my name. When he asked, I said, "Me?" and he said, "No, the other guy I'm making direct fucking eye with, yes you!" I looked away for a second because the direct eye was a bit awkward, and he immediately said, "You think just because you look away I won't stop talking to you!?" It probably sounds a bit crass to say, but I loved that I was interacting him in the middle of his live set. He asked what I did for a living, then moved on to the next person. Later in the set, he asked the age of the crowd and if anyone was under 30, then he pointed at me and asked my age, and when I told him, he said I was old as fuck. The set that he did was essentially the same thing that's on his special Tom Green: I Got A Mule

Tom Green was someone I found extremely hilarious when he was pretty much everywhere in the early 2000's. I found his sense of humor to be brilliant, and it seemed like there wasn't anyone else around like him. Even the way he talked and described things would make me laugh as his sense of humor was something I immediately latched onto. It's hard to describe to someone who wasn't alive during that time as to just how famous he was.

I think this was a good retrospective about his life and the few years he was on top of the world. I'm kind of curious as to what someone who isn't familiar with Tom Green would think of this as I feel I might be a bit biased from nostalgia.

A perfect little anthology of films that are a bit of a mind fuck.

I liked how all three parts had the same actors playing different roles. The relationships between the characters in all three parts were very surreal and the main connection that I found was that they all had a dominant/submissive role between the lead characters in each part.

I imagine there are plenty of people that watch this and think to themselves, "WTF did I just watch?" I don't know what it is about it, but I loved the weirdness of the acting and how each part could have been its own film. If Lanthimos ever makes another film with Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, or Jesse Plemons, it will be an automatic add on to the watchlist.

Knowing little about Brazil's political past, I was able to piece together quite quickly what state it was in shortly into the film. It's quite terrifying to think of what it would be like to fear your own government, especially someone that was previously an elected official that served in it before it turned into a dictatorship.

The last thing a dictator wants is for its people to speak out against it, so in order to prevent that they will silence them by whatever means necessary. It was quite harrowing to see it take place in this even though what we saw was fairly mild to what it could have been. When a whole family becomes traumatized because of the punishment of another family member, it makes you ask who is really being punished? Furthermore, leaving questions about what happened for so many years is another form of punishment that I could not imagine the relief of the government finally acknowledging the atrocities it committed.

It really puts into perspective how privileged having a democracy really is.

A pretty nerve racking film where the lead character continuously leads down the rabbit hole of bad decisions.

I can see how this was the inspiration for Uncut Gems as that film is essentially the same thing, but just dialed up a bit higher. I enjoyed Robert Pattinson as his character, Connie, seems pretty oblivious to how much his actions affect those around him. The luck he has is really impressive as most of the situations he was in would have gotten the average person arrested very early in the film. The fact that he is able to keep going to the degree that he is able to is a testament to his willpower of being that big of a piece of crap.

The scene where the security guard wakes up was a new fear that was unlocked as not only has he been beaten to a pulp, but he also wakes up to a bad acid trip on top of that. Talk about nightmare fuel. The end of the film tied a lot of it together and made me feel that the characters that ended up where they did was pretty fair.

Also, not a good time for anyone involved with Connie.

Very dark and gritty, this was a well done superhero movie considering the recent offerings that we have gotten from the likes of Marvel, but it's still a superhero movie.

Robert Pattinson did a better job of playing Batman than I thought he would, but he came off a bit too serious. I preferred Christian Bale as Batman as you came to care about him as a character, whereas with this, you just knew he was Bruce Wayne. I'm not sure if I had already known about Batman's origins that I would have cared as much about him as a character.

I did however love Paul Dano's Riddler as his riddles were great and he was just insane enough that I felt he was capable of doing anything with the worst of intentions. I did like how the motivations of the villains were all laid out in a way that their actions were justified in what they were doing. The joker reveal also set up the sequel to be interesting whenever that comes out.

I knew early on when I saw the Fugazi sticker that whoever made this was definitely a fan of music, and punk music nonetheless. It was cool seeing a film with a character wearing a Minor Threat t-shirt, and references to The Misfits and Cro-Mags. You really don't hear bands like that get name dropped too often so that alone was a unique aspect that I enjoyed.

It was fitting that the song they covered in a bar full of neo-nazis was, "Nazi Punks Fuck Off." I'm actually kind of glad that I watched Green Room 10 years after it released as the plot feels so much more relevant in a time when Elon Musk does sieg heil salutes and Kanye is slinging shirts with swastikas on them.

This film does have a good horror element to it in that they are the outcasts surrounded by outcasts of society in a small music venue/bar. Take away the premise surrounding punk music and playing at a dive bar, and this feels like most other horror movies where a group of friends slowly get picked off one by one.

It was cool seeing Patrick Stewart play the bad guy though.

It's fascinating that this was made 10 years ago, feels even more relevant now than it did then. With Companion coming out a couple of months ago, it seems that the theme of humans vs. AI is going to become more and more common.

You have to give credit to Oscar Isaac and Domhnall Gleeson as their back and forth mistrust in each other is really done quite well. Considering they are secluded away from the outside world, they pretty much have to play off of each other. Oscar Isaac plays the self-centered inventor, Nathan, quite well as you immediately sense that something is off with the place that he has which looks great for a futuristic setting. As Domhnall Gleeson's character, Caleb, interacts with Ava more and more, it made me wonder how much Nathan actually knew during the blackouts as the suspense was extremely high while watching the film.

Alicia Vikander plays the robotic role really well and is quite believable. Without giving anything away, her character really made me feel comionate towards her, almost as if she was a human herself. I really wasn't expecting it to end the way it did, but I felt that it was perfect as I was invested with the characters and felt like I thought I knew was going to happen. With how everything plays out, a rewatch would really put things into perspective, and Alex Garland did a fantastic job of putting this together.

It's kind of crazy how much the curse became a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy. The dad seemed to be a bit pushy as their coach, but I don't think he wanted the tragic outcome to happen to his kids. After losing the first kid, I would have thought he would have called it quits with his kids being wrestlers. Right before I went to see this, I felt a sore throat coming on. I went to a showing at 9:00 PM which is late for me, and I started to feel more sick as the movie went on, so the whole thing kind of feels like a weird fever dream of a movie. It also kind of felt like it was a live action anime in how exaggerated some of the characters were.

Robert Pattinson was great at playing two roles, and I think the whole concept of the film overall was original with the idea of a dystopian leader and the role of expendables. Mark Ruffalo was great as a leader who was full of himself and it was pretty easy to see that he was acting like another leader that we are always hearing so much about. I do wish that Toni Colette's character would have had more depth to her as she was the evil sidekick that had vanity on the mind.

I really liked the creepers as a whole, and I thought they all looked really cool running around on the ice planet. It reminded me a lot of Okja in that an evil person wanted to do harm to creatures for the sake of food. I was able to see Bob Dylan in concert in 2016, and while it was quite impressive to see a legend perform, I would have given anything to see him perform in the era that was shown in the film.

Timothée Chalamet did a very convincing job of playing Dylan as it went on, and in the performance he did on SNL last month was also worth watching. You can tell he went to great lengths to play Dylan in the musical performances. Before watching this, I didn't realize Joan Baez was going to be featured so predominantly as well, so that was a bonus to see her featured as much as she was.

I'm kind of surprised a Bob Dylan biopic hasn't been made before as he's such a legendary figure in music. As far as music biopics go, I preferred Walk The Line as the romance felt more sincere than this. Hopefully though, with an actor like Chalamet the least it can do is introduce Dylan to a new generation.

Unsettling is the word that I would use that best describes this. From the opening shot of the beating heart to Barry Keoghan's acting, everything about this feels off. Nicole Kidman's acting reminded me of her character from Eyes Wide Shut, which is kind of crazy, because she looks like she's barely aged since then.

The theme of an eye for an eye played well in this, and left me wondering why the children's conditions in this took place as it had a supernatural element to their circumstance. I enjoyed how this all played out, and will continue to check out more of Yorgos Lanthimos' films.

“Chefs play with the raw materials of life itself.”

Nicolas Hoult really just had to mansplain everything to the point to where you just wanted him to eat and shut up. The division of the guests and the chefs really showed the division between social classes. My main gripe was the end and how Anya Taylor Joy’s character was able to handle the situation and get a . It seemed to be a bit of a cop out in how easy it was for the chef change course with how he had acted the rest of the film.

Considering I went into this blind, I was expecting the food to have something wrong with it, and that’s what the twist was going to be, so the whole time I was waiting for a reveal centered around the food itself.

I really wasn't sure where this film was going to lead to next as it's the type of film where you start going down the rabbit hole (or in this case tunnel) and it just keeps deeper and deeper. A lot of the puzzles and clues were a bit farfetched, but overall it felt like a modern day noir film where you just kind of have to go with it to continue on.

With LA as the backdrop, I felt glimpses of Mulholland Drive as an inspiration, and lo and behold, halfway through Patrick Fischler shows up. I also caught a couple of easter eggs from being a gamer such as the minus one world in Mario and immediately noticing that the first issue of Nintendo Power was where the map from Zelda was from. I also immediately recognized the Silversun Pickups even though I had not heard that song by them before.

This felt like a love letter to someone that grew up in the 80's or 90's and likes surrealist type mystery films based in Hollywood. The nod to classic movies such as Rear Window and How To Marry A Millionaire confirm that. If that sounds the least bit interesting, give it a watch.

Ahead of its time in how influencers were viewed in the early days of TV. It's crazy to think now how much the media really has ahold of us today and what it's morphed into. Andy Griffith is great at slowly letting the power that he has get to him, and the disdain he has towards his followers. It's almost like a prophecy on what's to come, but on a more mild level. I'm sure if his character was placed in today's climate, he would have totally had a podcaster that spewed conspiracy theorist content.

Saturday Night Live is a show that's been around my entire life, and even though I wasn't alive when the first show was on, this made me feel nostalgic for it. The early days of the show were a lot more crazy as nobody knew how long the show would last, and the amount of drugs that were said to be behind the scenes just makes the show seem entirely different than it is today.

I loved the idea of making a movie about the lead up to the first show, almost like what Rogue One did with Star Wars. The actors playing their counterparts all seemed believable, and I especially loved the actor that played George Carlin as he seemed to nail his part pretty well. The tension throughout this could be felt as the energy before going live has a certain electricity to it. There were parts that didn't feel believable (such as Lorne Michaels going to a bar 20 minutes before showtime), but being accurate wasn't the goal, it was to show the chaos and the lightning in a bottle that the show had.

With the current situation with the pope, along with it being awards season, I figured this is the perfect storm of a time to check this out. The story was entertaining, but it definitely felt like it was a bit exaggerated at times as I would expect that electing a new pope doesn't have the amount of drama that this did.

It almost seemed like they were a bunch of schoolgirls trying to uncover dirt on one another and then gasping whenever they find said dirt. Don't get me wrong, I was all for the drama, but I feel like the amount of reveals that are given are probably not like how this is in real life. Still a good film with the amount of twists and lengths each cardinal will go through to become pope.

The way the actors play their parts in this made me wonder if they've genuinely been through hard times. I liked Willem Dafoe's character and how he was in the position to help those that were less fortunate, but at the same time he didn't put up with a lot of people's shit (with the exception of the single mom).

It's kind of sad to see the situations that people can end up in, and being a single mother living in a motel is a pretty sad situation. It's tough to see a child being brought up in less than ideal circumstances, because it's not the child's fault that she is being raised in the environment she's in. At the same time, the mom does know the difference between right and wrong, she just tends to lean towards making terrible decisions. I'm afraid if we revisited these characters 10 years later, the daughter would be stuck in the same situation, but hopefully she can find a way to break the cycle.

The shift halfway through that Paul takes was so much different than he was in the first half of the film. Timothée Chalamet really makes it out to be that he is the messiah, and the glares that Zendaya gives to him throughout the film could kill. The cast is even more stacked with the addition of Christopher Walken, Austin Butler, and Florence Pugh. It's a shame that the next one will be Villeneuve's last for the franchise.

What a beautiful looking epic film. The cast is extremely stacked, and almost anyone that was cast in this could be a lead in any other movie they are in. The score, sets, and costumes are all the perfect mix for a sci-fi film for adults who have grown tired of how oversaturated Star Wars currently feels. I'm interested to see how the other films in the franchise hold up, and judging by how highly regarded the second one is, this will be one of those types of film franchises that defines the 2020's in of pop culture longevity.

On a side note, this completes my "1001 Movies to Watch Before You Die" journey for the multiple versions of the book (1260/1260). This does feel like an accomplishment, and I've definitely learned a lot about film by completing that list. Hopefully I still live a long life even though it has been completed. 🙂

What a gut punch of a film! Andrew Scott carries himself in such a raw manner in coming to with his sexuality to his parents. The way he confesses to his parents how he really feels, he wanted to be at peace with his parents and get their approval even though they were no longer there. I think that form of grieving is something that we go through when coping with a loss.

The last half hour is a gut punch. It's truly a statement that those small interactions we have with someone daily can make a difference in someone's life even if you don't see it at the time.

The UN seems to idly stand by, and the whole time you're hoping they will step in and just do something. Being an interpreter for something like this would feel so powerless as you would know the information of what's to come, but that would be it. There's a Bright Eyes song with these lyrics:

First a mother bathes her child, then the other way around
The scales always find a way to level out

A relationship between a mother and a child is like nothing else, and this shows how close the mother and son depicted in this are. The mother is totally dependent on her son, just as he was at one point in his life. It really captures the anticipatory grieving that people feel when they know someone's life is nearing the end, and when the end finally comes it's a rush of both sadness and relief.

I wasn’t expecting a film set in war stricken Tehran to take on the psychological horror genre, but it worked pretty well. It reminded me a lot of The Babadook in that the mom just really resented the child throughout the film, and it made you wonder how much the mom actually loved her child.

I was wondering how much of it was in the mom’s head throughout the film since everything that occurred could have just been losing touch with reality. I learned two things from this:

The little dog, Ginger, was fun to watch when it was on screen, and the chemistry between Spencer Tracy and Joan Bennett paired quite well to the point that I cared more about their romance than the heist.

Buñuel is at his best when he does surrealist films, and this was about as straightforward as any of his films have been. Before watching this, I didn’t realize that he had made an English speaking film, as I was expecting it to be subtitled. I think his commentary about America says a lot when his only film in English has to do with race and oppression.

It’s kind of funny that I watched O Brother, Where Art Thou? last night, because this has similar themes dealing with musicians running from people with a bit of racism thrown in. If you haven’t seen any of his other films, I would recommend checking out his more well known films before diving into this.

This was a pretty good documentary about a band I had never heard of, but who has influenced bands I have heard of. It kind of reminded me of A Band Called Death, but instead of being a band that was found out, this was about a band that's still trying to make it big 30 years and 13 albums into their career. You really have to love making music to work a day job and then go and tour for a short while, but that's what Anvil does as a band.

I looked them up on Spotify, and they have short of 200,000 listeners which is pretty descent. They are also still touring, so it sounds like they are doing something right if they're still moving along.
