Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation

2015

★★★★½ Rewatched

In my M:I feels right now! Never fails to completely floor me how much gold’s in this from top to bottom. If Fallout’s the greatest straight modern action film of at least its decade, this takes the cake for the best pure Mission: Impossible movie. McQ snapped and it was only his first entry.

Mission: Impossible II

2000

★★½ Watched

Wish I was a fan of how over-the-top, schlocky, frenetic and kung-fu inspired this all is, which itself is one of the film’s strengths as it sets itself way apart from its predecessor and successors. The final act nearly won me over though.

Crazy to say that the M:I movies are arguably my favourite pure action series of all time, yet I’ve never been able to check out the original 3 before Bird and McQ took over. This is certainly the least action that I’ve seen from Hunt, as it’s way more concerned with the spy and espionage aspects of it all - love it! I can’t tell if either my sound system got shot, Netflix’s version is spotty, or it’s the film itself, but the whole climax scene’s audio was really, really static-y?

The Fabelmans

2022

★★★ Watched

I definitely seem to be in the minority in this. Still very much liked it - Spielberg has been no stranger to elevating each and every scene to cinematic quality and making the viewer feel that sense of child-like wonder. The Fabelmans looks beautiful and sounds wonderful, but feels… somewhat distant?

I get what the movie was trying to go for, commenting on things like art, the pursuit in trying to succeed in it, the bond of family, and how that…

The Hunt

2020

★★½ Watched

Has a really promising start, but it unfortunately descends into a downward spiral for me once all the shenanigans have been dealt with in the first act. I respect what they were going for here, but the execution of it all was pretty damn lackluster for me. Betty Gilpin and all her glory saves this.

It's What's Inside

★★★★½ Watched

My mum and I took turns pausing this at least 20 different times, clarifying little things throughout and just trying to keep up on what was happening, or at least, what we thought was happening. Haven’t had a movie made me do that in a while - what an insane, exhilarating rollercoaster of a ride from start to finish.

The Boy and the Heron

★★★★ 2

Gorgeous film-making from both a technical and standpoint. Evoked such a visceral response about my life and the loved ones that have ed on, all while delivering it through some of the best animation I’ve really ever seen.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

2011

★★★½ Rewatched

There’s certainly a lot of wasted potential here, but I don’t actually find it nowhere near as bad as the common consensus says. Great cinematography all around, and the addition of Blackbeard and his crew are a welcome, albeit gnarly new set of characters to the franchise. It’s still got Jack questioning everyone he comes in with on why the hell he’s the legendary/revered pirate he is in the first place, so already a solid sequel in my books.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials

2015

★★★★ Rewatched

Quite easily the best of the franchise (so far?). Barely any fat, moves at such a lively and frantic pace that the runtime flies by. Ball’s higher budget and larger cast clearly did only wonders to his confidence as a film-maker, as the action sequences in particular are beautifully helmed. So much love for this sequel, kinda wish more of these types of movies were made nowadays.
