Three Colours: Blue

1993

I was trying to put my finger on what exactly was stopping me from loving this, and I really just think it all came down to the characters. As well-acted as the film is, I can’t deny how emotionally distant I was from everyone in here, even the lead sadly. Might’ve been in a weird mood watching this, but I wish I felt way more.

Wendy and Lucy

2008

★★★★ Watched

The vulnerability Michelle Williams showed in Wendy And Lucy is some of the best I’ve ever seen, such a moving performance in an already special little film.

Enter the Void

2009

★★★½ Watched

A psychedelic and visceral ride through the life/afterlife of an American drug dealer living in Tokyo. Sometimes brutally horrifying, disturbing, a sort of headache to watch, a painfully true depiction of being human, and super duper horny - but this doesn’t shy away from the fact that Enter The Void is one of the most visually striking films of the 21st century.

Arguably contains one of the greatest opening credits sequences as well?

Terrorizers

1986

★★ Watched

Disappointed by this. I was expecting to love it considering how much of a masterpiece Yi Yi  is - which Yang also directed - but this is nowhere as compelling or emotionally hard-hitting. Beautifully shot nevertheless, and Yang's way of weaving together several different stories is still wondrous to watch.

I should've checked out A Brighter Summer Day first, it's just that runtime keeps intimidating me bro 😭

Dogtooth

2009

★★★½ Watched

A contender for one of the most disturbing films I've ever seen. I find it crazy how this got me genuinely laughing at one scene (due to Yorgos' trademark deadpan humour), and audibly saying out loud "what the f*ck" in the next.

Cléo from 5 to 7

1962

★★★★ Watched

I’ve been kinda vibing with this “French New Wave” stuff a lot recently, and this film only enhanced my recent love for it (if that makes any sense).

This was such a lovely film to experience, even though the picture does meditate on existentialism and our lead constantly thinks about facing her own mortality.

I guess besides that, the way Cléo from 5 to 7 was directed, against the backdrop of ‘60s , and it’s sort of innocent nature in…

The Young Girls of Rochefort

1967

My first Jacques Demy feature… and wow. There was something so damn infectious and delightful about this film’s spirit. Whether it be the expertly choreographed musical numbers, the absolutely charming cast who play all their respective performances with such obvious joy and ion. Or whether each frame was bursting with vivid colours, and the film moving at a breakneck pace (which completely worked).

I particularly loved how it approached a “slice-of-life” story, with the movie unravelling within the course of…
