Coogler has a great sense for violence; the images here are grimy, gothic, operatic. The whole thing feels huge and dirty. It's a nice world to live in. The film is most effective in its second act, a terrifically paced, single-location vampire film that wrings intelligent resonances out of its concept – the vampires represent both the allure and the violence of universalism – whilst navigating a multitude of genre tropes in smart, efficient ways. It all falls to pieces…

What a lovely film. Rare to see such a genuinely unlikeable character (Swinton’s) be treated with such grace. Made me cry. Structure is wonderful. A collection of nested metaphors/arcs which somehow all manage to rhyme during the film’s climax. Also so, so funny.
