Coogler has a great sense for violence; the images here are grimy, gothic, operatic. The whole thing feels huge and dirty. It's a nice world to live in. The film is most effective in its second act, a terrifically paced, single-location vampire film that wrings intelligent resonances out of its concept – the vampires represent both the allure and the violence of universalism – whilst navigating a multitude of genre tropes in smart, efficient ways. It all falls to pieces…
