Some of the greatest sequences from the late Showa era are in this film, such as the opening. Clearly stylized in a far more interesting way than the previous Fukuda Mechagodzilla film. Honda is clearly just the best director of this series. However, this just doesn’t come together as well as the previous film. Maybe if I rewatched this independently of the other films I would like it a lot more, but as for now, I’m content with this end to the Showa Godzilla series. And I love these other reviews that clearly connected with this film on such a deep level.

This feels pretty fresh relative to the last few movies (which was pretty surprising since Jun Fukuda is consistently the worst director in these Showa Godzilla films). Even more than Godzilla vs. Hedorah, even though that’s arguably more unique kaiju-wise and even though that actually engages with some thematic content (unlike this and the previous two films which hardly or just don’t engage with anything beyond spectacle). But Mechagodzilla is just such an interesting and fun Kaiju, maybe one of the best in this era. The repeated alien plot is getting irritating, but I thought the human sections were still pretty good and had a lot of unique elements, especially with King Caesar. Plus apes are cool. This flows very well too; I’ve noticed a lot of these last few films have major pacing issues, but this feels pretty smooth (though I wish the Mechagodzilla reveal was built up more). This still doesn’t live up to the best of this era though, especially because the kaiju battle isn’t as fun as much of the series. It has a brutality that I do enjoy when it is there, but much of the fights are pretty standard. The final fight especially is mainly just showing off Mechagodzilla’s move set, which is definitely fun but it could use more tag team wrestling or flying Godzilla.

Except for a few, these kills are by far the most boring in the whole series. They kinda just gave up on the Rube Goldberg kills for the most part, and now we just get regular shootings and impalings with little to no build up. There are more fake outs in this movie than actually interesting kills. Also all the interesting characters are barely in the movie, and the rest are super boring. I at least appreciate that this is trying to do something very different than the other films. It actually expands on the concepts, which is great to see. I love to see Tony Todd utilized more. And the complete unpredictability of deaths lets the film do something slightly new. But alas, it still doesn’t do enough to create anywhere near a better or more interesting story than the first 3 films. Maybe it needs more Tony Todd. At least this was better than part 4, though.

Better kills and characters than part 2. The pseud edgy kids were hilarious (“Roller coasters are just elementary physics, potential energy converted into kinetic energy” is a hilariously stupid line. They act like they read a 1st grade physics textbook and now think they’re geniuses. It’s a little annoying, but mostly funny). However, in a lot of ways this feels like a step down from part 2. Part 2 was at least trying to be a little different, whereas this is just basically a worse version of the original. Worse characters except for a few standouts (Texas Battle (awesome name btw) is just a worse version of the jock from part 1, and the two leads are much less charming than the two leads from part 1, etc.), worse kills, worse story, etc. I think the only thing that is different is the picture stuff, which isn’t nothing, but I would hardly call it something. Part 2 at least felt like a proper continuation of part 1, with the lore and concepts expanded on. Maybe I shouldn’t critique it for being a retread, because that is par for the course for these kinds of horror films, but part 2 gave me a taste so I’m a little disappointed.

I can’t believe I’ve owned this film for like 6 years and I never got around to watching it.

This is basically an anti-smoking ad wrapped in a badass action film. The final shot of Constantine finally switching to nicotine chewing gum is iconic. Also, it’s super funny that the climax is just Constantine snitching on Lucifer Jr. to his dad. And bro does not give a shit about Chas Kramer lmao. He dies and then they just leave his body with barely any respect paid.

But seriously, this movie was surprisingly fun. It has a very similar energy to Blade, where it’s just some badass dude killing evil beings that are hiding in plain sight in this world. The epitome of this film is Constantine flicking off the devil as he’s rising to heaven only for the devil to then heal his lung cancer so he can’t die. How can one not find that kind of film endlessly entertaining.

Yet I’ll deduct 1.5 stars because the opening had bland arial font left justified for some insane reason. Smh.

This has a similar charm to the previous few Showa Godzilla films, but something is just off about it. It's not like these last few have been particularly original, but this just feels so copy and pasted, even more than any other. Megalon is just a really boring bad guy, except for the mouth bazooka. It feels like an almost copy and paste of Godzilla but instead it's a cockroach. It has almost the same alien premise as the previous film, but with an incredibly boring human plot, and a significantly worse monster selection. Gigan isn't as interesting either. Jet Jaguar is dope though. That and the drop kick were the only original ideas this whole movie.

One of the punching sound effects in a drug bust scene was kind of hilarious. Super over the top and unfitting. But anyway I’m not trashing the movie for that. This was pretty incredible. Denzel Washington is forever the GOAT.

I initially wanted to critique this film for a naive, implicit institutional faith that appears in the ending that the current systems could be reformed by certain good individuals. But the more I think about the ending the more I realize it’s an exact statement opposed to that. The music says it all, 15 years later and nothing has changed.

After watching this and Saturday Night I can safely say that I just don’t find this type of 70s comedy funny, because the only funny stuff in this movie was the meta humor. But similar to that movie, this gets a because it works as a time capsule of the era. Unfortunately, the recurring characters between the two movies are worse in this one (Chevy Chase, Michael O’Donoghue, John Belushi, etc. are just not as well played (not talking about accuracy, they are just less interesting)). Will Forte is of course great though. He makes the constant one-liners not as obnoxious as it should be. The meta-structure is mostly entertaining, with a lot of good jokes coming out of it. Some of the filmmaking is definitely subpar. There’s an exceptionally bad shot where the zoom is super jittery for no reason. I have no clue why they didn’t retake that shot. But overall I’d say the film still works as a whole, and hearing the story of National Lampoon and Doug Kenney was very interesting.

I like Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, and John Belushi in movies, but I think their personal humor just doesn’t work for me at all. I didn’t find this movie to be very funny, despite it being filled with their humor. I think I only laughed at like one John Belushi joke, and the other 3 jokes I found funny came from Michael O’Donoghue and the random bar writer.

That being said, this was definitely an interesting look into that era of comedy. So it may not be funny to me, but it was interesting to see what was considered funny back then. The film is constantly moving and grabbing your attention in new ways. Dylan O’Brien and Cory Michael Smith are great at playing their characters (I’m sure others do too, but I don’t know the other people well enough to say. But everyone did great). Plus this has JK Simmons and Willem Dafoe so what’s not to love.

Kinda insane how many people in this movie are just straight up assholes (Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Milton Berle, George Carlin, Michael O’Donoghue, and like everyone to Jim Henson), but I guess it was just different times. This actually kinda works as a character rehabilitation for Chevy Chase though. Jason Reitman definitely has problems with Chevy Chase considering how he is portrayed, but his scene with Milton Berle is pretty incredible. Shows all his dickishness is just deeply rooted in insecurity, in a very human way that makes me want to like the guy more despite him being a total prick. But Cory Michael Smith masters the preppy asshole energy that Chevy Chase seems to exude in private, which also makes me hate him even more. Either way it’s just a movie and I don’t know if either points are accurate about the real Chevy Chase, but considering the filmmaker’s closeness to Chase I presume it at least partially is.

Unfortunately, my man Craig will never be able to recreate the glory of Lars and the Real Girl.

This was a very ugly film; the color and lighting are horrible. You can tell this was made by old people because of how it portrays the internet. Everyone earnestly calling redditors “gangster” hurts my soul. That big male nurse pisses me off. The soundtrack is horrible. The emotional core doesn’t work at all. Etc. etc.

The portrayal of this event as some revolutionary, class war (one scene even makes me think the filmmakers may be trying to imply it was Marxian, but maybe I’m just reading too much into it) is embarrassing and painful. It’s very cool that these people were able to utilize the system to fuck over some rich assholes and make some money in the process, but if this is Gen Zs occupy Wall Street, like the movie seems to imply, then I am embarrassed for us. The ending wants to portray this as some massive win for the little guy, and it does a horrible job at convincing me of that. Especially since every google search shows every single one of these rich folk are still immensely rich, and the only systemic win seems to be that hedge fund managers are shorting less. Which I don’t know much about shorting, but based on what the movie gives me, that seems pretty insignificant.

It’s not all bad, because the plot is at least somewhat interesting. Pete Davidson and Sebastian Stan were also fun. And Dane DeHaan saying “is that a sex thing” with a pedo-stache and braces is pure cinema. But yah it’s bad.

The film is pretty good at first, but then it just keeps doing the same thing over and over, adding nothing interesting to the table. It’s just a lot of flashbacks and spider therapy, but none of it is utilized very well. They should’ve reduced the flashbacks by like a 1/4th at least. Then after Sandler finishes his whole arc it’s another 27 minutes for some reason. This last act is shockingly derivative of a lot of other, better space movies despite the interesting premise.

The film definitely isn’t bad by any means. A lot of the movie works. It just needs to be way shorter, like maybe 60-70 minutes. Lots of boring stuff could’ve been cut. Sandler kills it though, I hope he keeps consistently acting in dramatic films because he’s great.

Thank you James, awesome movie.

Really in awe with a lot of the cinematography here. So much striking imagery, that will surely be burned into my mind.

The ending is wonderfully uplifting. Maybe it’s cheesy but I don’t care I love the smiling freeze frame. And the moments just before that are incredible too. The back and forth between Cutshaw and Kane is brilliant. Modern “intellectual” films should take note.

Though, my main complaint is that I wasn’t fond of the psychiatrist exposition dump scene. I feel like most of the dots can be easily connected on your own, so I don’t know why they had the whole dump. Only the last part of the dump was necessary. But of course thats only like 2 minute out of 2 hours.

Once they go into the basement it gets way less good. The ending was trash, made for ending explained youtube brain rot. But the moment briefly before that was nice.

The film looks nice sometimes, but other times, particularly in the second half, it looks pretty mid.

The “debate him, we can be an intellectual threat” shit was so dumb lol.

Idk I definitely don’t think this was bad but it totally thinks it’s super smart, engaging in a high level religious discussion, when this is actually just like a 2 minute discussion between an r/atheist and a religious person. Hence why the only real combatting of Hugh Grant’s position happens in the last 2 minutes with the prayer comment.

Hugh Grant made it kinda fun though, and at least it’s not actually an r/atheist movie.

I must say this average is very misleading. I like all but 4 of Shyamalan’s movies, half of which being his first 2 features, and the other half being the infamous Avatar and After Earth movies. But other than these 4, Shyamalan is endlessly able to make interesting movies, even when not everything works. Personally, I find his work to be very overly hated and recommend his work to any that believe they sound interesting.

Mann is definitely one of my all time favorite directors. His thematic threads across all of his movies captivate me endlessly, even in his “weaker” movies like like The Jericho Mile or LA Takedown. Viewing his transition from film to digital is also fascinating, especially with seeing how he used digital in such a unique and captivating way. His style is endlessly engaging and gorgeous as well no matter the movie, always being able to pull me in. If you haven’t seen any of his movies for whatever reason definitely check them out.

This is a list of directors, ranked based on my personal preferences.

Important Notes:
In order for directors to make it on the list I must have seen at least 4 of their movies and I must have given them a 9 or 10, or I must have given them a completed filmography list. Each director will be represented by my favorite movie from them. In each notes section I will list the director, my average rating for their films, my directors league score for them, and (if I have completed their entire filmography and are interested in them) a link to my list with their entire filmography ranked. It is also important to note that this list’s ranking is based on much more than averages and directors league scores, so the ranking won’t always coincide with those scores.

What is a Directors League Score:
A directors league score is a specific type of rating given to a director’s filmography. It is based on the following formula: 5 x (average rating + highest rating + lowest rating + how many of their films are favorites)

  1. Collateral

All of Nolan’s features ranked

Average rating: 2.79
Directors League: 48.95

Often Nolan fails to keep me engaged with his films due to many issues like his cynicism, reactionary politics, poor plotting, overly convoluted stories, etc. etc. However, sometimes he manages to strike gold, and when he does, he does an amazing job at it. Tenet is the biggest example of this, where he manages to get rid of or refine all the aspects I normally dislike, while still making a distinctly Nolan film. Overall I’d still consider Nolan to be a talented director, but he needs to figure out how to refine his work. Hopefully Tenet is a sign that he finally figured it out.

Average rating: 2.96
Directors League: 44.80

Noah Baumbach really struggles at creating actually interesting characters that you can sympathize with. Because he tries so hard to create sympathetic characters but usually fails it’s often painful (and sometimes even boring) to watch. Even most of the movies I like by him fall into this issue, at least somewhat. Only 4 of his movies escape this issue (his first 3 films and While We’re Young). However, his first 3 films suffer from a whole other set of issues (mediocre plot and visual direction). On the other hand, While We’re Young avoids all of these major pitfalls (not to say it has 0 issues), which really goes to show how great of a director Baumbach can be, in his current era, if he just crafted better characters.

COMPLETED

What is this:
This list contains all of the movies that were on my old favorites list. The goal is to rewatch all of these movies to see if they still hold up for me. In the notes section, it lists the rating the movie held at the time of me making this list and also my prediction of my rating after a rewatch. After a rewatch the movie will then get marked with its new rating, a down/up arrow or dash (signifying if I like it less, more, or equally after the rewatch), and it will be shoved to the bottom of the list.

Criteria for a favorite:
My old criteria for a favorite was a 9/10 or higher. However, recently I shifted my rating scale, making 10s easier to achieve, so the new criteria for a favorite became a 10/10. Because of my rating shift anything below a 10/10, including a 9/10, is considered a drop in quality to me. So for example if a movie starts at a 9/10 and gets a 9/10 on a rewatch that is still a drop in quality to me (there are some exceptions (as seen in notes), but this is going to be true almost every time).

I find Snyder’s work is often misrepresented. People take out of context clips from interviews, then poorly interpret his films to make these absurd conclusions, like Snyder is an Ayn Randian. However, despite me believing this is a reason for a lot of the Snyder hate, I must it he is also an acquired taste. However if you have this acquired taste and are able to see through a lot of these head scratching interpretations people have, his movies can be incredibly engaging thematically and visually. Not saying you will agree with me that Batman VS. Superman is a 10 or anything, but you may find some form of enjoyment out of it like I have. So I do recommend watching, or rewatching, at least a few of his films with an open mind.

  1. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
  2. Zack Snyder's Justice League
  3. Watchmen
  4. Sucker Punch
  5. 300
  6. Dawn of the Dead
  7. Army of the Dead

All of Orson Welles’s features ranked

Average rating: 4.10
Directors League: 65.50

Orson Welles was far ahead of his time, and one of the greatest ever. He was always able to creat these mesmerizing worlds with his beautiful, vast visuals. His use of lighting and shot compositions were incredibly genius from the his first feature to his last. How he used his sets together with his compositions truly was breathtaking as well. His films are filled with so much love and care, and the stories he told were magical, yet tragic. With all of that being said, the treatment of Orson and his art in Hollywood, despite his genius, is incredibly saddening. Hearing about the amount of times his films’ true, raw power were squandered is saddening. Its crazy to imagine how The Magnificent Ambersons could’ve been if it was never butchered, or how Othello could’ve been if Orson was given a proper budget (though Othello is of course still a masterpiece). These are questions we will never know the answer to unfortunately, but we can dream. However, I’m content with what we have available, and I will always have fun revisiting Orson’s beautiful films.

  1. The Trial
  2. Touch of Evil
  3. Othello
  4. Citizen Kane
  5. Macbeth
  6. The Immortal Story
  7. The Other Side of the Wind

All of George Lucas’ features ranked

Average rating: 4.42
Directors League: 74.60

George Lucas has consistently been amazing at creating and directing incredibly unique and interesting sci-fi worlds (Excluding American Graffiti, which is still good, but obviously doesn’t fall under this category). His directing skills are amazing, and that talent shines through in every shot of his films. They really pull you into their crazy universes and their political landscapes. Lucas is one of the best at crafting these captivating futuristic worlds, and I strongly believe he is one of the greatest directors of all time.

  1. THX 1138
  2. Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones
  3. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
  4. Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace

The Official Guide to Nedology c1i59 https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/lowlyluke/list/the-official-guide-to-nedology/ letterboxd-list-18027131 Mon, 28 Jun 2021 18:32:54 +1200 <![CDATA[

Nedology, the 4th Abrahamic religion that is so often ignored and excised from society, was founded in 47 AD by the prophet Ned, Jesus’s cousin. After witnessing Jesus’ death in 36 AD, Ned had a great awakening to the truth of God. With great respect to many of Jesus’s teachings, he first studied heavily, and then taught. Teaching his disciples of Jesus’ teachings as well as his own discoveries from his spiritual awakening. He had 3 core beliefs:
1. There is one true God, and He sent down his holiest creation, Ned, to speak his truth.
2. To acquire salvation you need to follow the word of God and Ned.
3. And most importantly watching shitty Nedflix comedies are the key to salvation (After the creation of Netflix Nedology historians began interpreting Nedflix as Netflix and the broad creation of various streaming services).

DISCLAIMER: this will not be a list of shitty Netflix comedies, as there are many of those that already exist. This will instead be something like the Catechism of the Catholic Church. A list of movies that help explain the beliefs of Nedology (there will be a brief explanation connecting the movie to the religion in the notes).

  • Dinner for Schmucks

The greatest movie adaptation of The Book of Ned (the holy text in Nedology).

  • Southland Tales

This movie follows precisely what the final chapter in The Book of Ned predicts. Incredibly blatantly a movie inspired by Nedology, most just don’t know this because of Nedologist oppression.

  • Miami Vice

Another divinely inspired work from a Nedologist. Loosely based on the State Enforcer parable.

  • The Simpsons Movie

Ned Flanders is one of the realest Nedologists out there. The only reason why they say he is a Christian in the show is because Fox is famously anti-Nedology and they threatened to fire Matt Groening if he kept him a Nedologists. But this movie shows Ned Flanders’ true Nedologist roots

  • Jesus of Nazareth

Nedology believes Jesus to be a prophet, not a god, however the books of Jesus are still very highly respected in Nedology, so this is an important piece of the Nedologist puzzle.

  • The Last Temptation of Christ

This is important to watch right after you watch Jesus of Nazareth as it grounds you back into the faith, elaborating that Jesus was still a man, and not a perfect man (unlike Ned).

  • Click

Nedology asks you to appreciate the little things, a key reason for why we believe shitty Netflix comedies are so important, and Click does an amazing job of expanding on this idea.

Fun Fact: It is theorized that Adam Sandler is not actually Jewish, but in reality a Nedologist due to this movie’s heavy Nedology symbolism.

  • Mur Murs

Continuing off my point with Click this movie exemplifies the beauty man has created through Ned, and helps us appreciate the little things in life.

  • Cats

Expresses the Nedologist idea that Cats are cool as fuck.

  • La Chinoise

A guide to understanding revolutionary Nedology.

Stanley Kubrick is a great director (no surprise there). While I may not like him as much as some, I still love his slow and precise style in everything he does. And he almost always manages to explore his ideas in an interesting and unique way, even in the rare instance when his films fail to really captivate me. I also have to mention how talented he is at tackling every genre from comedy to war to period piece to horror to sci-fi. Kubrick’s influence has been immense and I’m glad it has been.

  1. The Shining
  2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
  3. Eyes Wide Shut
  4. Full Metal Jacket
  5. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Edgar Wright is a very flawed director, but still mostly succeeds at engaging me with his stories and visual style. And even when his films have large flaws, usually there is still enough to keep me liking them.

PWSA knows exactly what his films are, dumb-fun, and always leans into those aspects making his films incredibly engaging. But despite that, he still has good, and sometimes even amazing, direction in his films (including the action direction). He is often criticized for various narrative issues, which are valid, but the aforementioned tone puts these issues more in the background so they don’t hurt the films as much (though it’s hardly an issue even in Pompeii, his one serious film). Overall though, I’d consider PWSA to be a good filmmaker and I have a lot of respect for him sticking to what he loves despite all the bashing his films have endured.

  1. Resident Evil: Retribution
  2. Event Horizon
  3. Death Race
  4. Resident Evil
  5. Soldier
  6. Mortal Kombat
  7. Monster Hunter

All of Charlie Chaplin’s features ranked

Average rating: 3.73
Directors League: 56.15

Chaplin has gotten me a lot more interested in the silent era of film. With his great physical comedy and style he’s made the first silent films I’ve really been able to get into. Without a doubt he is one of the best silent film directors I have seen. Then as he shifts into sound with The Great Dictator he manages to still keep that special feeling he creates with his silent films. And while he has a couple weaker movies here and there, he is overwhelmingly able to tell a compelling story, with incredibly conveyed themes, and great style, with or without dialogue.

  1. The Circus
  2. The Great Dictator
  3. The Kid
  4. Limelight
  5. Monsieur Verdoux
  6. Modern Times

All of Benny & Josh Safdie’s features ranked (including solo projects)

Average rating: 3.75

For their first few projects the Safdie brothers feel a bit lacking in many aspects that make their later films amazing. But when you finally reach their 4th feature Heaven Knows What it all starts to come together and you feel them come into their own. It’s definitely nowhere near their best, but you can see that distinct style finally form almost completely with this one. I’d say the Safdie brothers have far more potential than any other director out there other than Jordan Peele. Definitely check out their work, especially their later projects.

  2. Uncut Gems
