the afterlife sequences are gonna stick with me for a while. exactly what i’ve been looking for from wes. breathtaking. the basketball sequence is also an all timer. the most i’ve ever seen my dad enjoy a wes movie. also i don’t think there’s ever been a woman with bangs that i haven’t been in love with. much to consider.
few things i get more of a kick out of than watching proof of concepts. more filmmakers should do/publish them. love seeing how people iterate on their own ideas and evolve them past their starting point. my favorite example of this is Donald Glover’s Chicken Wings and Futility which essentially became Atlanta. good time !
I’m sure this has all been said before and possibly more eloquently, but this rewatch has made me think about the politics of this film a lot so I have thoughts:
Sinners is an indictment on Black capitalism that finds Coogler grappling with the impossible conundrum of creating Black art. For a brief couple of minutes in the film, the juke is the home of unadulterated Black art, joy, and freedom, until they realize that creating solely for their community…
