Just a masterclass in blocking and staging. Breathtaking camerawork and cinematography from the collaboration of Spielberg and Slocombe. The cinematographer’s years of experience and his noir origins are in clear stunning display in this film. The way in which 1 shot can have 2 or 3 different compositions through the talent on screen moving or the camera moving across the set is reminiscent of Kurosawa to me, and is one of the reasons I love his movies so much. A dynamic stunning piece of art that is the pinnacle of what the “blockbuster” can bring.

Absolute dynamite from the opening shot to the closing credits. Harrowing and transcendent. Its as if Coppola and his cinematographer Vittorio Storaro took a camera with them as they slowly travelled to the lowest depths of Hell, and took us along for the descent. There is so much depth, so much texture to explore in this picture, not to mention having to dissect the final cut and theatrical cut. Coppola has us plunge into deep questions on humanity, war, and…
