This YA manga time travel storyline is too much for me. The melodrama. The snail pacing. The schlocky romance. The laughably terrible VFX (which actually was an overall highlight of this experience). I could barely pay attention, I wanna take a nap. I’m sorry this was a miss for me.

I can’t stop thinking about that scene. If you’ve seen it, you know the one. If you haven’t, all I can say is music is one of the most enduring forces in the universe that every human being has the power to wield. 

Miles Caton. He is the moment. He is the soul of Sinners. If he chooses to continue acting, I’ll be so seated for his next project. If not, I hope above all else he releases his own soul/blues record. His voice and the way he plays guitar can make the angels weep. 

Believe the hype. 
Believe the word-of-mouth. 
Sinners is the real deal.

If you put the opening credits of Drop and Final Destination 5 next to each other and wanted us to guess which is which, it’d be a challenge for someone who isn’t obsessive like me. PLUS this takes place in a restaurant in the sky, much like the Final Destination: Bloodlines disaster…

Maybe that’s why I enjoyed Drop so much— it felt like a Final Destination film without the Final Destination of it all. I didn’t plan on seeing Drop in theaters but I’m so glad I did. It was way more fun than I was expecting, and where I thought the trailer gave everything away, it absolutely did not. 

There was some crazy camera work that’ll leave you not wanting to blink (at least that’s what happened to me).

I went from “this movie looks lame, I hate the marketing” to “oh shit this movie was great, I hate how it was marketed even more”.

A surprise romantic tragedy! I was expecting “my husband was a serial killer?!” not “my husband [redacted redacted redacted]?!”

Loved the mystery and the atmosphere and Rebecca Hall’s performance. I never wish to know what dark depths of Hall’s mind she had to channel to preform some of the more emotional scenes.

Oh man. Stephen Graham, I was not familiar with your game. Those last couple minutes were uncomfortable in the best way. It was as if all the one-takes were leading to this moment of realization that we aren’t going to cut away from this expression of raw emotion. Hoping for many nominations, if not wins, in Grahams near future. 

But the one-take gimmick (I hate to call it that) hurt the story at times. There were episodes that might have benefited from a cut or two, but I see the vision. An unflinching look at how our youth is growing up in a world we “olds” barely understand and the ripple effect it causes. 

I tried to find the word for “a child killing another child”, like amicicide (killing a friend) or pedocide (killing children), but there isn’t one. All the act of murder definitions I found were for adults committing the deed. Just thought it should be noted.

Had the HONOR of introducing some of my film club to this piece of cinema. Did anyone say anything about it? Nah. But I shared it and that’s all that matters. More people need to know about this secret Final Destination movie!!

A solid writing and directorial debut by Billy Bryk and Finn Wolfhard! There were some pacing issues here and there, and there were some bits that went on a little too long, but I really enjoyed the camerawork and framing of every scene. 

The only only thing I don’t understand is….why the yassification💅 of Jason with the eyeshadow? 

I felt a special kind of old learning a character is named Miley. A teenager in 2023 (assuming the movie takes place around the time it first premiered) having that name absolutely checks out if her parent was a teen mom.

As someone who has never seen Jaws, I imagine I enjoyed this more than someone that has. I don’t have anything to compare Blades to, so this was all fresh material for me!

Bob Hoskins might’ve hated filming this movie, but his performance should be studied by actors, comedians, and animators. He was so good, he had people begging for a sequel until the day he died! 

I’m glad they never made a second one, but I wish Disney would let them, ya know what I mean?

25 years ago today, a collision course set off between this franchise and my life. It was a slow burn. I was an overprotected, yet morbidly curious, child. 

As the franchise (and I) grew, so did my curiosity. While I wasn’t able to watch any of the movies when they were initially released, it didn’t stop me from tracking filming news, stalking their movie websites for clips, or reading spoilers as soon as I could on IMDb message boards. 

Once I moved out for college in 2011, I had just missed the window for seeing Final Destination 5 in theaters. But I was just in time to buy the “4 Film Favorites” DVD bundle from Wal-Mart. 

I thought I was finally soothing the burning curiosity my inner child held onto for 12 years. Turns out, that burning curiosity was actually a gas leak that was waiting for the spark to make me explode.

I. Love. This. Franchise. 
Watch out for the signs. Keep your wits about you. Feel something, do something. The inevitable will always happen. It’s best to sit back and let life take you on the ride. Love and feel everything fiercely and fully because you never know. 

With everything so horrible in the world right now, May 15th is a bright shining light that keeps pulling me forward. Even if it ends up being another The Final Destination (please no), existing and being able to share in the excitement with other fans during this build up to Final Destination: Bloodlines is one of the greatest joys of my life.

Re: The 97th Acadamy Awards

I spent a large portion of my life dreading the day Tony Todd would be in The Oscars 'In Memoriam' segment.

I didn't know I should've been dreading a worser fate.

When Gene Hackman appeared, I knew.
It was over.
And a moment I counted on happening...didn't happen.
The sob I choked out when the screen went black almost turned into a yell when I said his name out loud.

I never wanted to see Tony Todd up there, because it meant he was gone.

This is so, so much worse.

This was almost perfect. 
Almost. 
…
Do I say it?
Imma say it.  

Who the hell let that little tone-deaf, unenthusiastic child onto the stage? 
Who saw her “sing” and “dance” and thought to themselves “This child is the best choice for this song”? 
We need to talk. And I can damn sure speak louder than money. 

Besides that, this was a great tribute to The Lion King. Having the MVPs of the movie singing their iconic songs and showing behind-the-scenes clips from 30 years ago seems like a no-brainer idea, but then you we’re talking about THEE Nathan Lane and THEE Jeremy Irons, and you realize these performances are a miracle. 

The editing was much better this time compared to Encanto at the Hollywood Bowl from 2022. There were still too many cuts, but nothing like Encanto’s. Maybe this means next time it will be flawless?

Michelle Trachtenberg was the blueprint. The ultimate 90’s Nick kid. The coolest tomboy that many imitated, but never duplicated.
Her and her characters influenced my hobbies, my fashion, my family’s sense of humor. 
She wasn’t much older than me. I idolized her like one would an older sister.
There has never been a time in my life where her face hasn’t been there.
Michelle Trachtenberg has always been.

Most Americans in their 30’s have been crying today and feeling a loss we’ve never felt before. 

With Matthew Perry, he was older. 
With Liam Payne, he came into our lives too late. 
It’s almost comparable with Aaron Carter, but this feels rawer.

Tonight I will cry. I will feel. I will write, like Harriet the Spy taught me to. 

Michelle Trachtenberg for the talent she shared with us. her for the light she emitted. her for her dry delivery, and her brilliant physical comedy, and her ability to make us cry and feel with her. 

It’s too soon to be saying goodbye to her.

Growing up, my father listened to two genres of music— country and 60’s hits. 
The Beatles, The Supremes, etc. 
As I got older and started understanding (and heaven forbid, feeling) the lyrics, there were two songs that hit my soul and produced tears so full of sorrow, I had to begin to avoid them. 

One of them was Simon and Garfunkel’s The Boxer. That song was preformed during the SNL50 Homecoming Concert. 
The tears swelled, and I sheepishly explained to my husband how this song affects me. This live performance didn’t include my favorite detail of the song— the chorus of ‘lie, la-lie’ has a hard drum beat between some of the ‘lie’s. That beat feels like the impact of a punching glove to my soul. 

That second song? 

Homeward Bound. 
Also, I am realizing tonight, by Simon and Garfunkel. 

This felt like a cruel prank, SNL.
