I quite enjoyed this tale of a daughter who is forced to go out of her comfort zone. I wasn't a huge fan of Sophia Carlson as the lead, not because she was terrible or anything, not at all, she just didn't exude a personality. I loved Connie Britton as the mother, probably because I always confuse her with Katharine Ross - I think it is the hairline. And what can I say, I had an immediate crush on the lawyer played by Kyle Allen, who gives Anton Yelchin vibes.

Interesting connection: Connie Britton, the mother, was also in The To Do List with Aubrey Plaza. Not quite the same type of to-do list, but a to-do list nonetheless.

I liked Simone Ashley in Bridgerton, and I'm NOT saying I have thing for Hero Fiennes Tiffin cause he's way to young so not saying that at all. I need to add that I can watch rom-coms for months on end, but even I have standards. And this one was just awful. Not 1 star terrible, not exactly a Hallmark, but it just didn't come together at all. There are very few scenes with the two characters together, and because of that there is zero chemistry. Nothing is organic; everything comes about because of magic or fluke or just randomness. In my books this one is a major fail.

I was the only one of four that laughed throughout, so I guess this film isn't an instant classic. In fact I wonder now if some of those laughs were warranted.

When Colt Seavers leaves the room with the guy in the ice he's on his cell phone and he is raising his right side collar, like he's trying to hide what he's saying from the hotel wall. I thought that was brilliant. I thought he was doing that because that's what he has seen actors do in movies forever whenever they try to hide something. But later we find out that there were cameras in the hallway, and he actually was trying to hide something (his face). I thought the scene was funny when there wasn't a real purpose behind it. Now that I know there was a purpose, I'm not sure it will be funny anymore on a rewatch.

Hmmm. I can feel it sucking me in... that rabbit hole of what makes something funny. Why would the lack of purpose be funny? Well, by its very nature someone who does something they are copying, but doing it in the wrong context, is hilarious. That action of putting one's hand over one's eyes to imitate "looking for something".... in the real world it works if it is sunny, and you are trying to hide the sun. When someone does it on a cloudy day it is either just plain odd or really funny. But it isn't funny at all on a sunny day. [lost in thought].

Ok, I'm going to watch it again on the soonish side. I want to see if I laugh just a much at the same spots. I feel like it might tell me something about comedy, in particular re-watchable comedies. Or it might just tell me something about my own sense of funny and that's fine too.

Feel good 'you go girl' film. It began as a big girl makes fun of and destroys the beauty pageant trope (with a little middle finger salute to her mother who organizes them), and maybe it should have stuck to that, but even though it turned into a big girl wants to give it a real go "in red shoes", it was still nice to see a "all bodies are swimsuit bodies" type of film. Sometimes you need an affirming feel-good film, especially one whose emphasis is that people come in all sorts of sizes and persuasions and the world is so much richer because of it.

In a couple of hours I will be going to The Dan Hill.
You've no idea how happy I am to say those words.
Goodness, not because I like his music. I'm with Terry and Simon on that one. No, it's because Lizette was over-the-moon to be going for her 35th birthday and the only person more excited for her was Cheryl-Ann. So in solidarity with Lizette-a-roonie and "how's it going, so" Cheryl-Ann, I'm going to The Dan Hill tonight.

The couple we are going with have been warned:
- do not be late
- keep the dog in the house all day
- drive here don't walk through the woods between us in case you get lost
- and do not, DO NOT wear a green number made by your mom last Christmas.

I don't normally wear jewelry because like Cheryl-Ann, I don't like my short fingers. But her mother reminded us both of the girl at the zoo, so on went the ring. I don't have a velvety thing in my hair, I have no ruffles on my shoulders, and I'm not wearing a dress. But I do have a purse to match!

There are no motorbikes in sight and no hockey game in town tonight, so the coast is clear. And when "Sometimes when we touch" plays, I'll see Terry dancing with Lizette, and Cheryl-Ann driving that piece of junk of hers down the pothole infested dirt road, singing along to the radio, on her way to Lizette's, somewhere South of Wawa.

Random thoughts that I will fit into a review form later.

Loved it. Exquisite cinematography. I could have watched those desert scenes for another two hours.

In of content, I must confess that I am somewhat unsure. I have this thing. You know how when there is an election and people look you straight in the eye and say "Go vote"? And what they mean is, "vote" for the good guy, my guy, But if both sides are saying the same thing, then nothing is being said, reallly. I got a bit of that here.

He did not want to go South and be the Messiah... but push comes to shove, he did it to win the war (or part of the war). But if people can be manipulated, they can be manipulated - for your side or the other. Either way, it's not good, even if it is in your favor.

I like to think that Chani (Zendaya) agrees with me. That no matter the result of Paul Atreides' decision to manipulate or not, the goal should always be to do what is right using the right tools. That is my ideal self talking.

But now I know different. Now I have seen how influential (read: super rich) people can spend a good 60 years creating a world which can influence a huge swatch of people to believe a bunch of crap, and to then one day have them suddenly become a vocal group with enough influence to take down what was an otherwise a contemporary modern democracy. (Here's looking at you Iran in the 70s, and the US in the 2020s).

I don't know. Loved the film, but saw the apocalypse.

A lovely little ditty whose only surprise is how long it takes to get to where it's going, and not in a bad way.

You aren't going to learn a whole lot about AI and you'll probably spend a lot of time thinking that you've seen M3GAN before (no, she's not the one in Bride of Chucky). To be fair they do all look alike, these white murderous dolls!

The ratings were interesting. Fairly low in general, but the people I follow had it in the 4+ star category. That doesn't happen too often, and I'm glad I went ahead and relied on my friends' ratings.

I'll definitely watch this again on some brain dead night in the future.

I have all the patience in the world when it comes to romance films and romantic comedies. Since December I've watched one if not two every night because I was in that mood and it was a project of sorts. Some were great, some were alright, but this... and I watched a bunch of netflix rom-coms, but this, goodness. There are no words. I hate to criticize writers because I know how difficult it is, but this? So bad. I mean really bad. This is what gives rom-coms a bad name that they do not deserve. And performances? Well, how can you blame any actor for such a bad script. In this case, though, you can. Lohan. Whoa could she be any worse. The others were probably trying to do their best given the script, especially Ed Speleers (the photographer) who I know is excellent at his craft (just watch him in Outlanders and you'll see).

Skip this one. Even if, like me, you are in a mood and you want easy and you want a rom-com, keep looking.

"the dumber I behave the richer I get"

I have so much to say about this film. It triggered so many thoughts and beliefs and convictions to come out into the arena, show themselves and duke it out. I'm still dizzy watching the show.

Flying carpet-psycho babble-Oprahesque victim-glorifying self help crap confused with philosophy and thinking and self-awareness.
Stories being sold as "from x perspective" as though to warn the standard white male that he can skip.
Visuals of suits everywhere with briefcases and titles with additional Letters attached and sunny backgrounds of big buildings presented as authority figures.

So much going on.
I'm going to sort out some of these ideas and rewatch the film, and giv'er a second review because that's how much I loved this film and how much I loved that it got me thinking so hard.

Oh, and that poster of the young black boy staring at the white baby doll. phuck.

MAW2024 #2 Greece

Not my favourite Angelopoulos but it was oddly compelling in some ways. I kept having to guess at what was going on, and who was who, and why they wanted someone dead and who exactly it was they wanted dead... Basically it was a guessing game. Not knowing much about what was going on gave me the time to focus on the scenes, the blocking, and the camera.

What I found interesting is that Angelopoulos really fills up a scene with movement when the camera is still. One still scene on the front of a building might have 2 horse carriages go by along with one car while another car parks and four different sets of people walk by. All of this to show a character come out of a large official building. It's like he's adding pomp and circumstance to "official" or "government" buildings. Whereas the decrepit falling down buildings and homes in the older neighbourhoods get no such attention. The camera there wants no adornments. I found that interesting.

Also, he seems to love long hallways or just depth really. He shows patience with characters walking down a long hallway. And he pokes fun at a pose of officials all squished together in a narrow hallway by a prisoner's door. The one shot I will take with me is at the prison. It is a very long stone hallway where about 5 door openings all line up. The openings are all shorter than those coming through them. The shot is of multiple prison guards quickly making their way towards the camera, one at a time. It's just brilliant.

Oh, and the best shot ever. Context (I figured out most of the plot by this point): A prisoner is holding an MP hostage in his cell. The prisoner has a gun. This has been going on for the entire film, and everyone is trying to figure out what to do. Five or six officials are standing around in an office. A guard comes through the door and says: "He wants music". ('he' being the prisoner). The room goes completely silent. No one moves. No one breathes. It lasts what feels like 5 minutes, and I laughed so loud! You would think they were told the bomb just fell on them. It was hilarious!

And that's when I realized that Angelopoulos really enjoys taking the piss at officials, and I love him for that. Armed with this knowledge, I'm am SO looking forward to rewatching this and any other of his films. I'm also quite certain that a rewatch will seriously increase my rating of this film.

I'll be spending the few months catching up on rom-coms to see what the genre has to offer in of new films, especially the ones made for streaming. I'll throw it the usual oldies as well, to mix things up.

Second viewing and this may very well be my favourite film of the past few years. There is something so comforting about this film. It's so honest and brave. It's so adult and mature. It is so low-key and modern, tidy and neat.

A crisp and trim "In the Mood for Love", KonMari'd for the modern age.

I could not do it. I couldn't last more than 1 hour or so. I had it in my head that it was going to be a story told from the perspective of the indigenous people. I thought I read that Scorsese and Leo decided against telling it from the white man's angle.

Anyway, I probably say this all the time but I think I'm done with Scorsese. I ire his body of work, I most ire his work in preserving film, and I will continue to purchase each of his Criterion Box Sets where he selects a few world cinema independent films. But I'm done with his movies about controlling tough guys. I've seen the canon, and I'm good. Onto other things and other perspectives.

March Around the World 2025 3o2qn Japan (Studio Ghibli) https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/lise/list/march-around-the-world-2025-japan-studio/ letterboxd-list-58836518 Tue, 4 Feb 2025 13:56:26 +1300 <![CDATA[

This year we have as many winners as we had participants 10 years ago.
Back then Chile was the featured country, 89 people participated, and 22 people completed the challenge.

In comparison, this year we have 269 participants, 88 who completed the challenge (in addition to 31 who watched more than 30 films), and a total of 4,125 new reviews.

Over 4,000 reviews. For one month. Do you realize what you have done? Do you really know how important this is?

This platform isn't MUBI or any other "cinephile" platforms. You aren't preaching to the choir here. You may very well influence someone this year to watch a film from "away" because you rated it highly or reviewed it well or recommended it in a list, and it may very well make the viewer a bit more empathetic, or knowledgeable towards people that differ from them.

YOU did that.

And I thank you. I thank every single one of you who participated.

A very special thank you to Scott Emmons who went above and beyond in helping with the Challenge this year. I can't thank you enough Scott! And thank you to Johnno who also volunteered when I needed extra help at the last minute. Thanks Johnno!

---

If there are errors in my calculations, let me know soon and I will fix.

The 89 cinephiles who completed this year's challenge are:

March Around the World Challenge 2018 - Results
__________________________________

A huge heartfelt thank you to all who watched world cinema this month. I truly believe, as do many of you, that viewing stories from around the world is essential, to expand our horizons and see that we more alike than different.

The following 16 people have contributed to that goal, by watching 30 films from 30 different countries (or more) and sharing their experience and thoughts with us. Congratulations, but more important, thank you. Your reviews may very well encourage others to seek out the various films you have selected.

Thank you to everyone who watched a foreign film this month, and a very special thank you to those who helped expand the Letterboxd database of African cinema. We covered 150 different countries this month, among them 38 from Africa. That's amazing.

To thank you all for participating, I've created a cumulative spreadsheet that includes the data from all previous challenges going back to 2013. I haven't include this year's data yet, but it should be there soon.

A special thank you to Matt and Grant from Letterboxd for the exports and Wayne Little and Edd for the help with the spreadsheet. Could not have done it without you.

----------------------------------------------------
The Challenge
Watch and review 30 films from 30 different countries in the month of May. No rewatches.

The rules
1. One film must be from the featured country: Estonia.
2. Reviews must contain 2 tags: the film's country and "30 countries 2014". Note: Tag your films when you log them, not when you review them if you review later. This helps with Kyle's spreadsheet.

Lists and Results
- Kyle's excellent spreadsheet for results (thanks Kyle!) * see note below
- List of all participants (if you don't appear on this list, you haven't tagged your list with "30 countries 2014"). Participants also appear in the list below with their selected Estonian film.
- List of all reviews for this challenge.

* Kyle has included a way to him about his spreadsheet if you see errors or missed entries. Go to his Overview tab, and look for "".

Thanks to Berkan for creating the challenge last year. See Kyle's 2013 spreadsheet for last year's results.

I'm still working on these lists. I don't include films that were part of a retrospective. I try to add all shorts. All lists include the programme in which the film played in the notes.

Why? So that anyone in the world may have mini-tiff festivals at home with streamable or purchased media.

We are finally heading back to TIFF after a 5 year hiatus, and we hope we can catch up with some of you over a brew or two.

Our tiffr schedule

This list is the films we are seeing. The notes include the screening date/time and why I choose the film. When I have time I might expand it to include the other films on my shortlist that didn't make the cut.

  1. The Mother and the Bear

    Centrepiece
    Fri Sep 6 - 2:30pm - Royal Alex

Picked because it is Canadian, but mostly because it is set in Winterpeg, and from a Korean point of view to boot. Also, the director won Best Canadian First Feature at TIFF 2016 with Old Stone and I wanting to see that one.

  2. Daniela Forever

    Platform
    Fri Sep 6 - 5:30pm - Royal Alex

I adored Colossal (TIFF 2016) . I had so much fun watching that film! I've seen it twice since and it always makes me laugh and smile. The story for this reminds me of Lanthimos's 2nd film Alps, where you could hire an actor to play a dead loved one for you. In Daniela Forever it looks like it's a drug that plays a similar role. It allows you to see/speak to deceased loved ones via lucid dreams. It's just such a good idea, I had to see it.

  3. Bird

    Special Presentation
    Sun Sep 8 - 11:45-1:45 pm - Lightbox 1

    Andrea Arnold. That's why.

  4. Relay

    Special Presentation
Sun Dep 8 - 3-4:55 pm - Princess of Wales

Because the director made Hell or High Water and that's all I need to know.

  5. Triumph

    Platform
    Sun Sep 8 - 6:10-7:48pm - Lightbox 2

Part 3 of a trilogy. I didn't see the first film but I did see Glory and am looking forward to another film from this director.

  6. You Are Not Alone

    Discovery
    Thu Sep 12 - 5:25pm - Sco 7
Because it's Canada (Quebec in particular), and because it is set in Montreal, and because of the way TIFF described it:

a lonely pizza delivery guy is targeted by an alien who preys on Montreal's lonely and alienated men. He then meets someone he could like, but the alien might prevent him from being with her.

    They also say:
"With their first feature film, long-time collaborators (and real-life partners) Marie-Hélène Viens and Philippe Lupien are performing a radical genre experiment, mashing up P.T. Anderson’s Punch Drunk Love (TIFF ’02) and Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin (TIFF ’13) to create a new hybrid lifeform.

Well, you can't mention those two films in this household and not create serious anticipation.

  7. The Seed of the Sacred Fig

    Centerpiece
    Thu Sep 12 - 8:45 to 11:33 pm - Sco 3
    Because it is Rasoulof!

  8. The Assessment

    Special Presentation
    Fri Sep 13 - 2 - 4pm - Sco 13

Because it's her first feature film, and because I've had a similar story in my head for the last 30 years that I never wrote down about having a future where women had to '' to have children.

  9. The Last Showgirl

    Special Presentation
    Fri Sep 13 - 6:45 - 8:10 pm - Sco 9

Because I knew a dancer who quit and saw how she couldn't or didn't feel right about or qualified for any other job.
Because I'm hoping Pamela Anderson can drive it out of the park and show them all.
Because her previous film Palo Alto gets decent ratings.
And because of what Eli said (bless his soul) about Palo Alto: "Alright, so I watched this film twice over the past twenty four hours. WOW. Wow... wow. Okay, so I know that this film has gotten some bad reviews, but you honestly just have to trust me here: Gia Coppola knows what she's doing. I swear it's true. You may not have lived this film, but I lived this film. The way they talk, the way they act, the way they are... it's real. It's real life. I'm twenty years old. These characters are probably supposed to be sixteen or seventeen or eighteen and I can it. I can it so vividly... the girl, the asshole, everyone."

  10. Jane Austen Wrecked My Life

    Centerpiece
    Sat Sep 14 - 2:30 to 4:04 - Royal Alex

    'Cause, like, Jane, duh.
    And it's a debut.

It's Over!

To all 536 participants:
This is by far the craziest March Around the World we've had in the past 12 years. We had almost 5 times more participants! Why is that so great? You are part of an extraordinary group of people who just contributed 7,352 reviews for films of the world to letterboxd in one single month.

7,352 reviews for world cinema.
Let that sink in.

No matter how you contributed, whether with reviews, ratings, lists, likes, comments, you were part of something pretty amazing and I think every single participant should get a high five, a slap on the shoulder, a huge smile and a nod of respect.

To the 27% of you (146) who completed the Challenge, chapeau. bravo. standing ovation. You contributed more than half of all reviews: 4,648 reviews to be exact. Lovers of world cinema everywhere thank you. So many people will benefit from your dedication.

You are (in alphabetical order):

And to the 56 fans who watched 30 films, congratulations! Watching that many films in one month is not easy. Sometimes it isn't even fun... but, no matter what, you have 30 less on your watchlist and hopefully many added to the "rewatch" list.

You are:

Congratulations to all, I hope you had fun, I know it's tough but we do what we gotta do to promote subtitles.

And of course, none of this would happen without those who help me get the data, count the data, fix the data, edit the data, read the data and interpret the data.

Oh, and some of you would not have won the challenge without their, um, 'fixing' your errors ;-)

The hugest MERCI to you kind and generous film buffs:

*********** Original Challenge Info and Rules ****************
World Cinema, here we come again! And we are all stopping in on Mexico this year. Spread the word. Invite friends to travel with you. Get that family member, you know the one, to watch at least one film that is from 'away'.

There are rules to win the challenge (and it is not easy), but most of us are just happy to watch a few more films from other countries than usual, and that is always a win.

The published 2024 spreadsheet.

****************************************************
The Challenge
(note new tag: maw2024)

Watch and review 30 feature films from 30 different countries in the month of March. No rewatches. Must include 1 film from Mexico. Please read the rules.

Rules
1. Feature films only (60+ min)
2. No re-watches.
3. Only films watched, logged and reviewed in March 2024 count.
4. Log and tag your films immediately after watching, with 2 tags: maw2024 and the (single) selected country of the film, from the LB list of countries. You can add your review later by going to the log and editing it.
5. To count, a review needs to be somewhat substantial in that it has to show that you have seen the film. One liners do not count. Think more along the lines of 150 words +

Don't forget that you can sort this list in a variety of ways and you can even see if the films are available at itunes, amazon, etc. (although that might be a Pro feature).

These aren't necessarily the 'best' movies (although some are); they are simply the movies I love. Some only have to be seen once, some I rewatch regularly. Some are deep, some are fun.

I use the heart icon to list all my favourites, but I use this list to keep track of my top 100. Of course I can't count too well...

  1. In the Mood for Love
  2. The Thin Red Line
  3. The Whispering Star
  4. Blindness
  5. Certain Women
  6. Army of Shadows
  7. Nights of Cabiria
  8. Babette's Feast
  9. Chungking Express
  10. 2046

A list of all feature films that played at TIFF 2012, with the programme in the Notes.

Excludes shorts and programs that play older films (Cinematheque and City-to-City).

Note: 2023-12-22 I had another list that was "in progress". Copied all the films there to here. Some of the items in the note in that list may still be applicable:

Note re "It was the son" (E' stato il figlio): It is now listed at TIFF as "The Son Did It". I modified the title in TMDB - should appear here Aug 21st as "The Son Did It" instead of "It Was the Son".

Also note that "Fin" is listed in Letterboxed as "The End".

Films that need to be added to TMDB:

A Hijacking | Him, Here, After | The Holy Quaternity | Home Again | Hyde Park on the Hudson | I Declare War | Igor & the Cranes' Journey | Imagine | In the Name of Love | Inch'Allah | Jump | Juvenile Offender | Key of Life | Krivina | The Last Time I Saw Macao | The Lebanese Rocket Society | The Lesser Blessed | Leviathan | Lines of Wellington | Liverpool | London | The Modern Babylon | Lunarcy! | Making Chinatown | Mariner 9 | Men At Lunch | Miss Lovely | Mumbai’s King | Museum Hours | My Awkward Sexual Adventure | No Place on Earth | Once Upon a Time Was I, Verônica | Paradise: Love | The Patience Stone | Peaches Does Herself | Peaches Does the Drake | Peddlers | Penance | Peripeteia | Perret in and Algeria | Picture Day | The Quiet Room | Revolution | Road North | Shahid | Ship of Theseus | Shores of Hope | Sleeper's Wake | Song for Marion | Springtime | State 194 | Still | The Stories We Tell (Sarah Polley) | Storm Surfers 3D (2011) | Three Kids | Three Sisters | Three Worlds | The Tortoise, An Incarnation | Tower | Underground | Viola / Birds | Virgin Margarida | Walker / The Capsule | The Walls of Dakar [2010] | Watchtower | Wavelengths 1: Under a Pacific Sun | Wavelengths 2: Documenta | Wavelengths 3: I am micro | Wavelengths 4: From the Inside Out | A Werewolf Boy | What What Richard Did | When I Saw You | When Night Falls | White Elephant | Zabana!

TIFF 2014 Lise Ranked 4w43s https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/lise/list/tiff-2014-lise-ranked/ letterboxd-list-363999 Thu, 24 Jul 2014 03:38:41 +1200 <![CDATA[

I saw the first 20 films, and these are ranked.

The others I'm leaving here as a reminder of why I wanted to see them.

  1. Winter Sleep

    Nuri Bilge Ceylan.
    Cannes winner.

  2. Timbuktu

[Won Prize of the Ecumenical Jury, Cannes Film Festival 2014.]
    Lotsa buzz.

Variety: "Abderrahmane Sissako confirms his status as one of the true humanists of recent cinema with this stunningly shot and deeply empathetic drama." Jay Weissberg

Indiewire: "It starts slowly, though and before the viewer is quite acclimated to the film’s unusual rhythms, it can seem disconcertingly disted as we shift from one strand to the next without any sort of narrative hand-holding on the part of the director. But with time, throughlines emerge and characters recur, and we begin to discern the film’s shape" " In fact, our press notes tell us that it was a real-life incident similar to the stoning that inspired Sissako to make this film, which perhaps s for its inevitably political and rather despairing outlook. The barbarism of Sharia law’s view of women; the violent "justice" meted out for the smallest infractions; the threats of force levelled against a girl whose mother refuses to simply hand her over in marriage to a stranger; where, as the Mullah asks at one point, is God in all of this? "

  3. Leviathan

[Won Best Screenplay at Cannes Film Festival 2014.]
Director of Elena which we liked quite a bit

  4. Nightcrawler

    Release date October 17, 2014

writer of The Fall and writer/director of Bourne Legacy
gyllenhaal, so it will probably get wide release. i can see it later. But "crime journalism" topic sounds really interesting....

  5. The Drop

    Director of Bullhead.
    'nuf said.
    + Matthias is in it.

  6. Jauja

Stars Viggo, but sounds like something we might want to catch at home instead.
    Hollywood Reporter (Cannes): www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/land-plenty-jauja-705315
    Variety (Cannes): variety.com/2014/film/reviews/cannes-film-review-jauja-1201193594/

  7. You're Sleeping, Nicole

The Playlist: Cannes Review: Stéphane Lafleur's Delightful Québécois Comedy 'Tu Dors Nicole' Is The Hidden Gem Of The Festival

  8. 99 Homes

writer/Director of Goodbye Solo, Man push cart and Chop Shop watch before TIFF

Andrew Garflield and Michael Shannon. Hmmm.

  9. Force Majeure

Peter says it was a "word of mouth sensation" at Cannes so think about it. oh, it won Un Certain Regard at Cannes. Ok, I'm in. Swedish comedy - it can't be bad.

  10. Bird People

    "Smash hit at Cannes"
very easily prone to spoilers, so can't read anything.
Seems there is something interesting about the structure such that one asked if it was a joke.

TIFF 2012 ranked.

*I didn't end up going to see In Another Country.

The list includes notes about why I choose the films.

  1. Rhino Season

From the director of A Time for Drunken Horses, which I adored.

  2. Rust and Bone

Premiere. Director of Le Prophete, starring Matthias Schoenaerts from Bullhead. One of my favourite films with one of my new famourite actors. No brainer. Plus it got really good reviews at Cannes.

  3. Amour

Not a premiere, although rumour has it that director Michael Haneke will be there. Can't go wrong. Cannes winner (again).

  4. Much Ado About Nothing

Premiere. Again, I have to spend those premiere tickets, and who better to see that Joss and Nathan Fillion. (Yup, I'm a browncoat).

  5. War Witch

Another Canuck film that won 2 awards at Tribecca, incl best actress. Set in Africa, so that's good, because I haven't seen all that many small pictures about Africa.

  6. Pieta

    Director of 3-Iron.

  7. Zaytoun

Director Eran Riklis made one of my faves from a couple of years ago: Lemon Tree. Really looking forward to this one.

  8. Byzantium

I could have waited to see this, but it was the only thing that fit in my time slot.

  9. Thermae Romae

"An architect from ancient Rome is propelled into a modern-day Tokyo bath house in this kooky time-travelling comedy based on Mari Yamazaki's award-winning manga series.". That sounds so cool.

  10. To the Wonder

    Premiere. No brainer. Malick.
