RIP Mx. Entity. You would’ve loved Dr. Strangelove.

While the narrative elements are weak, this has my favorite stunts ever on film. (And that’s why we watch these right?) My jaw was DROPPED the moment that plane started flipping over. Holy shit. Then, got my dorky Ethan for a brief moment with one leg sticking out and also just trying to stay on a fucking plane while shit just goes wrong. Glorious. Got some of that with him in that wacky diving suit helmet too! That sub scene comes in second for some amazing cinematography, color, movement, and a neat aspect ratio shift. The napkin I was using as a fidget device? Shredded.

Probably my least favorite entry to end this M:I journey. Not enough camp. No good twists. Too choppy. Not enough dorky Ethan. But they did give him his longer haircut back, thankfully. Very cringy dialogue with wayyyyy too many flashbacks - breaking my movie cardinal sin of not trusting the audience understands. I came to see Ethan jump out of aircraft, not exposé on the same plot details multiple times. Spent so much time explaining Easter eggs, they didn’t have time to develop any of the new plot points. Anyway, watching sweaty Tom Cruise fight in his undies was an invigorating experience.

If Tapeesa would’ve died, I seriously would have never watched a Mission: Impossible movie ever again. I loved her so much. Queen.

Watching Tom Cruise drive a car backwards was the hottest thing I've ever seen. Ethan and that dang yellow car was my favorite part of this movie. I loved how much Ethan has to fumble with the door just to get it to get in and has no idea what the buttons do. The wipers - genius. Then, he talks to Grace when she ends up behind the wheel like he's teaching his daughter to drive for the first time. "Go straight here...or turn..." and "RIGHT!" Wonderful. Anyway, I couldn't get over the lack of seatbelts, but I was laughing so hard it didn't matter.

The best realization they had in making this series is you have to let Ethan be the biggest dork in the room. (Definitely my least favorite Ethan Hunt haircut. Gave me the ick. Thankfully, Vanessa Kirby is right over there to distract me.)

Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes! This is what the people have been craving all these years. Character development! A huge fucking jaw dropping surprise! No robots!!!!! No random aliens!!!!!!! Humor! Villain who has a real, relatable motive!!!!!!!!!! Bucky Barnes in a mullet again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great hair all around!

Hello, I am Lily. I could care less about Marvel on most days. However, this is the second year in a row that one of these superhero movies has blown me away when I least expect it. It all comes down to the characters and the writing for me. I loved the characters so much (except for JV Captain America because all he did was fucking whine like ummmm actually good for your wife to get out of that situation). Superheroes are real people, too, and I need my movies to realize that. That’s why I love mutants so much. Yelena and her dad were fire!!! (I haven’t seen Black Widow FYI.) Florence Pugh acting her ass off and David Harbour bringing it with the one liners. Bucky is back and hotter than ever. The dishwasher really got me and I even knew it was coming. Love the congressman look on him.

And, finally, the star of the show: Bob. I came into this very excited for Lewis Pullman. I love him so much. So getting lovable, relatable Bob was the icing on the cake. I was also very happy his hair went back to normal in the end. I really liked his hair…….a lot. He may be on my favorite character and villain Mount Rushmore. Seriously, I loved the Void so much. The thump and effects of each person was enlightening. (Well…) Anyway, I cheered when “and Bob will return” came on the screen. I need him. If he didn’t return, I was going to never watch another Marvel movie again.

Our homeboy Ethan (pronounced Ee-fan by me) is rocking some amazingly confusing hair. At first, it’s bad in a straight, no texture poof way. Then, an apex where it’s perfect. The texture, the wave, the right amount of sweat. It’s bad again for like one scene towards the end but I appreciate the brief moment of bliss in Ethan’s hair journey. I actually don’t much of the actual mission but can how much I fangirled over those long locks.

I can’t decide if my favorite moment was Alex trying so hard not to cry at Rosie’s speech at his wedding or baby Katie holding Alex’s finger while he’s beautifully framed by the sun coming through the window and deciding whether or not to give it all up to raise this kid as his own. Either way, Sam Claflin is one of the most beautiful (and talented) men on this planet. Wow. Y’all can’t be giving perpetually single romantics like me hope like this.

Who needs Barbenheimer when you have War and Prejudice - 20th Anniversary Special?

I as a child feeling so sad that I couldn’t ever see this in theatres. This was my favorite movie for so many years of my childhood along with my first age-inappropriate crush, Hayden Christensen. But I couldn’t really see this in 2005 at the age of six, could I? Waaaaay before my theater era. Now, twenty years later, I was having such a blast while trying not to sob tears of joy - Hayden’s introduction was fabulous. While this movie’s dialogue grinds my gears and the floppy CGI is hilarious, the final fight between our boys is peak cinema that was amazing on the big screen. Obi-Wan always makes me cry…

Each week, watch a movie that relates to the last one by an actor, director, writer, etc. (Like the 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon! Get it?) For the third year of this random challenge of mine, I will be exploring the degrees of Tom Cruise. Will I find I actually don't mind Tom or will my current affliction stand? Only time will tell.

Keeping track in the notes: number (#105-206), connection, *first watch, thoughts. No repeat of connections during the year and no film repeats from this masterlist.

Fun Facts and Stats - In Progress
• Tom Cruise movies watched: (1) Risky Business, (8) Jerry Maguire, (11) Eyes Wide Shut, (15) Vanilla Sky, (16) Edge of Tomorrow, (19) Mission: Impossible, (20) Mission: Impossible 2
• Overall first watches: 10/52 (19%)
• Number of director connections: 1 - David Lynch, 2 - Todd Field

Unintentional Trends:
• 109-111: LAURA DERN
• 112 & 119: Cameron Crowe and Tom Cruise Collabs!

Previous: (2024) Dustin Hoffman
Next: TBD

  1. Risky Business

    105) Connection: Tom Cruise* 😎
(Previous film to end 2024 was Rain Man)
This was such a fun ride. I got to check this off of my Criterion Challenge as well with this watch. The most fascinating part was his hair. It was terrible until he got rich and switched to the middle part.

  2. Bound

    106) Connection: Joe Pantoliano*
This classic be lesbian do crime flick has been on my radar for years. This was perfectly wonderful the way all Wachowski sister films are wonderful. I think I really enjoy their use of sound and color. Plus, when I saw Joe Pantoliano in Risky Business, I knew I needed to use him as a connection yet again!

  3. Showgirls

    107) Connection: Gina Gershon
Gina Gershon fucking stole the show in Bound. Probably one of the sexiest characters on this planet. (I need her. I want her.) I wanted more Gina, so I hopped on my much anticipated rewatch of Showgirls. I have always wanted to watch this with someone else and maybe that time will come eventually...soon.

  4. Twin Peaks

    108) Connection: Kyle MacLachlan*
R.I.P. David Lynch. As a tribute to you (and the magnificent Kyle sex scene in Showgirls), I am finally going to watch the international pilot episode of Twin Peaks so that I can log it. I am very close to watching all the big David Lynch features. I also watched Lost Highway this week, so it's just Inland Empire left.

    I really love Agent Cooper.

  5. Wild at Heart

    109) Connection: David Lynch, Director
I queued this one up for this week to rewatch the first David Lynch film I ever watched. I really did not like this the first time around, but that was before I binged Twin Peaks. That was before I got a taste for the Lynchian of it all. This time around, it was a much smoother and funnier watch. I'm like really into Nic Cage right now.

  6. Smooth Talk

    110) Connection: Laura Dern*
Now this is why I do not go place alone and also why I do not talk to strangers (even at the age of 26). I wish there was a bit more to it all than just the ending, but I felt Laura Dern was pretty good in this. Not sure why this is in the Criterion Collection though... Hm, anyway.

  7. Citizen Ruth

    111) Connection: Mary Kay Place*
This was amazing! Laura Dern has solidified her place in my heart. I had no idea what this movie was about going into it. I picked it because I am really into Alexander Payne right now. (I saw him at Film Streams a couple months ago and fell in love. I also really really loved Election.) Thankfully, this was a great fun ride. It was very relevant to everything that is going on right now and wasn't uber depressing! Loved this little jaunt into Laura Dern. :)

  8. Jerry Maguire

    112) Connection: Kelly Preston* 😎
Our second Tom Cruise film is in the books! I went into this blind (I didn't even realize that is was a big winner at the Oscars that year) and came out absolutely blown away. I loved this and I actually found Tom Cruise very hot in this. I think 1996 Tom Cruise is peak for me. The ing cast was great and it was so weird to watch Renee Zellweger talk in her actual accent. I've only seen her as Bridget!

  9. Down with Love

    113) Connection: Renee Zellweger*
Not my cup of tea, but it wasn't too bad. The directing kind of messed up the whole cadence of the thing for me. However, even when Ewan McGregor gives the straight-campiest performance, his eyes still seriously act. I wish she would've made him beg more. The countdown bit was extraordinary. I love that they even gave them a musical number during the credits. I was fully expecting this to be a musical lol. Well, there's only one place to go from here...

  10. Moulin Rouge!

    114) Connection: Ewan McGregor
I saw the touring stage production two weeks ago and knew I needed to give the movie a good rewatch. Plus, Down with Love didn't have enough of Ewan McGregor singing and I needed a fill. Great as ever! I still like this better than the staged production.

Putting my MAY-sion: Impossible reviews in the notes as I binge them all before Final Reckoning!!!!

  1. Mission: Impossible – Fallout

I screamed when Henry Cavill reloaded his biceps. The Cavillrine! How have I made it this far without knowing the OG reload is from this movie! About a third of the way through, I said to myself, "Henry Cavill is too hot to not be a secret bad guy." He's so hot with his little mustache.

Anyway, this is the second Mission movie in a row where I thought, This is just like Paddington.

  2. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation

My favorite Ethan is dorky Ethan, so him falling over that car was amazing. I’m also 100% for badass women and Rebecca Ferguson really fit the bill. I do appreciate that there are starting to be more twists, turns, and near-death experiences that have an actual impact on the story. Very very excited for the next installment in my May-ssion Impossible journey.
(Guys, I miss skinny Ethan so bad.)

  3. Mission: Impossible

My obsession for men in little glasses started with Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible. Sad we don't get more in this movie (or the following entries). #bringbacktheglass

  4. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning

  5. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

I would like to give props to Brad Bird for getting an A113 Easter egg into this Mission: Impossible movie (and for getting Ethan his great M:2 hair back). Makes me want to watch The Incredibles real bad.

  6. Mission: Impossible III

Don’t interrupt me when I’m asking rhetorical questions!!!!!

The three things my brain took away from this first watch: Phillip Seymour Hoffman DA GOD, love a badass woman moment in a big boy action movie, and Tom Cruise is one of the most beautiful criers in the biz. I love when all Laurence Fishburne needs to do is yell at agents. 🥰

  7. Mission: Impossible II

Starting January 2023, my "Oracle of Bacon" challenge has been an ongoing staple in my movie watching. This is a comprehensive list of all the films and how they’re all connected over the years. Connections for all films in notes. All films are connected to the film before by an actor, director, random detail that made me laugh, etc. One movie per week, unless I get excited and watch more, for 52 each year. No connection repeats during the year and no film repeats ever. It’s that easy! Each year has a new muse to start with and try to loop back to without breaking the cycle or rules.

🥓 2023 - Oracle of Bacon 1: 52 Degrees of Kevin Bacon (Kevin Bacon): 52 films, 6 Kevin Bacon movies, 38 first watches (73%)

(2024) Oracle of Bacon 2 6c641a The Hoffening https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/lilyllama/list/2024-oracle-of-bacon-2-the-hoffening/ letterboxd-list-38677768 Sat, 6 Jan 2024 15:32:14 +1300 <![CDATA[

Each week, watch a movie that relates to the last one by an actor, director, writer, etc. (Like the 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon! Get it?) I started and ended with Kevin Bacon last year, so this year I’m switching it up: it’s the degrees of Dustin Hoffman. We shall start with Hoffman and try to end with Hoffman. We'll see if we ever loop back to him in between. 😍

Keeping track in the notes: number (#52-104), connection, *first watch, thoughts. No repeat of connections during the year and no film repeats from this masterlist.

Fun Facts and Stats
• Dustin Hoffman movies: 10/52 (19%) (1) The Graduate, (18) Midnight Cowboy, (19) Marathon Man, (29) Dick Tracy, (34) Kung Fu Panda, (36) Runaway Jury, (43) Tootsie, (44) Death of a Salesman, (48) Moonlight Mile, (52) Rain Man
• Overall first watches: 40/52 (77%)
• Number of director connections: 5
• Number of movies starring Mads Mikkelsen as a depressed dad who's a teacher, directed by Thomas Vinterberg: 2
• Number of movies where Mads plays a character with a fucked up left eye: 2
• Number of movies where I just wanted to give Mads Mikkelsen a fucking hug: 4

Favorite (Un)Intentional Series
#58-60: Goodman Fest 2024 - Monster's Inc, The Big Lebowski, O Brother Where Art Thou
#63-68: Film af Mads Mikkelsen - At Eternity's Gate, Another Round, The Hunt, Pusher, Pusher II, Valhalla Rising, Casino Royale
#73-75: Otto Month - Laura, Where the Sidewalk Ends, Anatomy of a Murder
#98-100: Lily's White Boy of the Month Hall of Fame - Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal

Previous: (2023) Kevin Bacon
Next: (2025) Tom Cruise

  1. The Graduate

    #53) Connection: Dustin Hoffman* 🌟
First one of the year! This film has been on my radar since my Wes Anderson directorial deep dive class. It's one of his most influential films, and it shows! I really like this movie. It's so goofy and so much like Royal Tennebaums and Bottle Rocket! Jason Schwartzman is basically Dustin Hoffman from The Graduate.

  2. The Elephant Man

    #54) Connection: Anne Bancroft*
I'm still not 100% sold on David Lynch, but this one was pretty good! I especially loved Anthony Hopkins as doc. I also wasn't sold that this movie was going to make me cry, but watching John plead for his life was the sucker punch in the face.

  3. The Silence of the Lambs

    #55) Connection: Anthony Hopkins*
I just finished watching the Hannibal TV series, so I am on a Hannibal kick. Originally, I was going to watch Hannibal, because I didn't know this was actually the first in the Anthony Hopkins Hannibal experience. Thankfully, this movie was as good as people claim it to be. I honestly thought it would be scarier, and, on that same page, I thought it would be more Hannibal. I also think it would've helped the plot if the dog did die.

  4. The Player

    #56) Connection: Scott Glenn*
“Scotty Glenn, he’s great!” I did not expect all the cameos and meta movie elements. I would love to see this remade (maybe in a couple of years). The best eyebrows in the biz.

  5. High Spirits

    #57) Connection: Peter Gallagher*
Peter Gallagher is going to be my new celebrity obsession. His eyes are just so beautiful. This romp was brand new to me, and I really liked it. I also didn't recognize Liam Neeson until the last scene.

  6. Monsters, Inc.

    #58) Connection: Jennifer Tilly
I think Boo is my favorite Pixar character. Recreating her catching Cheerios is one of my favorite pastimes. Mike Wazowski, bi icon, and Sully Sullenburger, gay icon, are my favorite chaotic duo.

  7. The Big Lebowski

    #59) Connection: John Goodman
Always a classic and one of my favorite Cohen brothers' films. This movie is just weird in such a good way. This watch, I really connected with John Turturro as Jose. He just has that swag.

  8. O Brother, Where Art Thou?

    #60) Connection: John Turturro
Gosh, I haven't watched this in so long, but it's been on my re-watchlist ever since I got really into "I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow" again a few months back. I find myself drawn to George Clooney and I also think Everett is the same exact character as Mr. Fox.

  9. Fantastic Mr. Fox

    #61) Connection: George Clooney
A natural next choice after O Brother, Where Art Thou. If I wasn't emotionally invested in Luke Wilson and obsessed with Royal Tennenbaums, this would definitely be my favorite Wes movie. It was the first one I ever saw! Willem Dafoe just knows how to play a slimey little guy.

  10. At Eternity's Gate

    #62) Connection: Willem Dafoe*
Eh, meh. It's a little too whiney and wayyyy too shakey. Dafoe was good, but the other characters were so rude for no reason. That teacher bullied him for no reason, and then got mad when he fought back? Okay, bitch. I really watched this for Mads Mikkelsen, and (to no surprise) it made me say, "This is just like Hannibal," when he literally just talked to him about God through strange metaphors. I love you Mads Mikkelsen (especially as a priest holy cannoli). Never change. *kiss*

    1-3-24
AMC Westroads Screen Unseen #1 of 2024. Aud 13. No concessions. In the deepest point of AMC Westroads I have ever been to. It took three turns to get there. Not as religiously cleansed as I though it would be, but actually had a bit of an edge to it.

  • Mean Girls

    1-17-24
Alamo La Vista with Sydnee and Jessie. Aud 8, Big Blue, Row 4, Seat 10. First movie back after snowmageddon January 2024. Saro Cranberry Spice with a Breakfast Club + Avacado, of course. I spent most of the movie dissecting the math in the movie and also annoying my friends about Cute Jake from Calculus. You go Glen Coco!

  • All of Us Strangers

    1-20-24
Alamo Drafthouse La Vista, Aud 6, Row 2, Seat 7. Lemonade and Reese’s Pieces. Apparently, I did not know anything about the plot before watching. I thought the whole plot was just Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott. I did not know there would be ghosts.

  • Fargo

    1-25-24
Alamo Drafthouse La Vista, Aud 4, Row 1, Seat 9, first watch. Fucking fantastic. Glacial Till Strawberry Rhubarb with peanut M&Ms. First of six films planned in theatres over the next three days. Wish me luck!

  • The Zone of Interest

    1-26-24
Films Streams Dundee Theatre Main. Millstream cranberry cream soda and small popcorn. I went on a whim. I had to park behind Pageturner’s because the lot was full. That was a first. A bit disappointed, because it wasn't as surreal or tragic as I had expected.

  • New Nightmare

    1-26-24
Alamo Drafthouse La Vista, 2024 Secret Screening #1. Theatre 5, row 2, seat 4. Alamo day 2/3. Just water. Meta moment. I have never seen a Freddy movie before.

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

    1-27-24
Alamo Drafthouse La Vista, Three Ring Circus LOTR Marathon 1/3. Big blue Dolby Atmos theatre 8, row 4, seat 8. Third day of Alamo in a row. Experienced with Sydnee, Jessie, Sierra, and Connor. Fueled up the food for the first one: Popcorn, Dr. Pepper, Glacial Till Strawberry Rhubarb cider, loaded fries. Aragorn fan club!

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

    1-27-24
Alamo Drafthouse La Vista, Three Ring Circus LOTR Marathon 2/3. Big blue Dolby Atmos theatre 8, row 4, seat 8. Experienced with Sydnee, Jessie, Sierra, Connor. Glacial Till Strawberry Rhubarb cider, Reese’s Pieces from All of Us Strangers and Peanut M&Ms from Fargo. Wet Aragorn, best Aragorn. This one had me entranced (it may have been the second cider).

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

    1-27-24
Alamo Drafthouse La Vista, Three Ring Circus LOTR Marathon 3/3. Big blue Dolby Atmos theatre 8, row 4, seat 8. Experienced with Sydnee, Jessie, Sierra, and Connor. Breakfast Club w/ Avocado to finish the night. I love Aragorn but not with clean hair. They brought around the Last Call sign when they defeated the orcs and I realized there was still an hour left.

Becoming a cinephile (and convincing all your friends to you) comes with the inevitable, "You haven't seen that yet?" Thankfully, I have friends who are willing to watch all these crazy films I have been berating them about for the past two years. I put out a poll amongst us with a list of some of the most popular films that are widely regarded as films you must see before you die. (Yes, I used my copy of the book for reference.) I programmed a list of films under the umbrella of "leading ladies", of which me and one other person max have seen.

Rules of the game: every week, watch at least one movie that has the same actor, director, or writer as the one before. Hope to find new gems, cross off my Watchlist, and make it back to Kevin by the end of the year. You can find the ongoing masterlist here.

Keeping track in the notes: number, connection, thoughts, *first watches

Fun Facts and Stats
• Kevin Bacon movies (all first watches): (1) Mystic River, (17) JFK, (31) A Few Good Men, (37) The Demon Murder Case, (41) Frost/Nixon, (52) Sleepers. ✨That’s 6!✨
Overall first watches: 37/52 (71%)
• Number of films where Kevin Bacon plays a grumpy man in uniform: 2
• Number of films where Kevin Bacon plays a grumpy man in a suit: 3
• Number of Nixon-Watergate-related movies: 2
• Number of Newman/Redford films: 2
• Vampire flicks: 2
• Keanu Reeves Movies: 4
• Number of Wilson brothers featured in a connection film: All 3, baby! (Andrew, Luke, Owen)

Next: (2024) Dustin Hoffman

  1. Mystic River

    #1) Starting point!*
I’ve never seen this one and it was the highest rated film on Letterboxd that was in the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon box set I got from the library. 😊

  2. The Matrix

    #2) Connection: Laurence Fishburne
I was pleasantly surprised that Laurence Fishburne was in Mystic River, so I really wanted to rewatch The Matrix, naturally.

  3. Memento

#3) Connection: Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano*
I picked this up when I saw that it was on the list of “known for” on Carrie-Anne’s IMDB and then was surprised to find that Joe was also in it. 😂 This has been on my Watchlist for a while since it’s on every “watch before you die” list and has a high score on here. I was pleasantly surprised with my jaw dropped to the floor at the end.

  4. Inception

    #4) Connection: Christopher Nolan*
Yes, I have never seen Inception. I really liked Memento and wanted to experience that mind twist again. While I didn’t think the ending hit as hard as Memento, it was intriguing throughout.

  5. 10 Things I Hate About You

    #5) Connection: Joseph Gordon-Levitt*
This is possibly my least favorite Shakespeare play, but I felt that this adaptation did the story justice by taking out all the abuse. I have had this on my Watchlist forever and so many people rave about it. Plus, I thought it was funny that Heath Ledger tried so hard to have an American accent, but slipped a couple times. He is definitely the grumpy boyfriend I want and need.

  6. Brokeback Mountain

    #6) Connection: Heath Ledger*
I have had Brokeback on my Watchlist ever since I found out it was an angst gay love tragedy (my favorite genre). I was going to do Dark Knight but then said, “NOPE I GOTTA WATCH THE GAY COWBOYS,” when I saw this on Heath’s profile and my bi heart is happy.

  7. The Fabelmans

    #7) Connection: Michelle Williams*
This was pure luck to see in theatres. I actually didn’t like Michelle Williams in this movie, but the movie was good by the end. 😊

  8. Uncut Gems

    #8) Connection: Judd Hirsch*
Judd was my favorite actor in the Fabelmans. (I thought the acting was forced by everyone else but he was so natural.) Then, I saw Uncut Gems on his list and knew I needed to check this off of my Watchlist. The last twenty minutes made me glad that I did!

  9. The Wedding Singer

    #9) Connection: Adam Sandler
I’ve been eager to watch this for the past few months and saw the perfect opportunity. This movie always slaps.

  10. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

    #10) Connection: Drew Barrymore
Fate said, “Lily, this is the next movie you have to do,” when it happened to be playing at the movie theatre. I was already going to see it but this solidified it. 😊 I could not get over how cute Drew is in this!
