My opinion might be a little distorted for this one because I was trying extremely hard to focus on the movie and tune out any distractions while surrounded by a bunch of excited children (and adults). If I rewatch this at home, I’m liable to change my mind.
But here are my thoughts at the moment…

I think the ability to enjoy these Disney live-action remakes hinges on the following:
1. Your sentimental attachment to the original.
2. How often you watched the original growing up.
3. How recently you rewatched the original before seeing the remake.
4. Your ability to avoid getting hung up on how the remake differs from the original.
For example, I grew up with The Lion King (1994). I watched it countless times as a child. I rewatched it before seeing The Lion King (2019). And I found the live-action remake to be a lifeless drag.
I don’t have any sentimental attachment to Lilo & Stitch (2002), because even though I was a kid when it was released, I was at an age where I thought I was too cool for “kid movies.” It wasn’t until years later that I realized how magnificent it is. I started to rewatch it before going to see the remake, but I stopped myself after the first act because I realized rewatching it meant I’d probably fixate on all the ways the remake pales in comparison.
So, I attempted to go into Lilo & Stitch (2025) with the mentality of someone who’s never seen the original. And if this was my first time experiencing this story, you know what? I probably would have loved it.
Obviously, the animated film is vastly superior (that goes without saying). And the humor in the live-action version falls pretty flat. But one benefit of live action is getting to see the emotions conveyed on the actors’ faces, and Maia Kealoha and Sydney Agudong did a great job selling me on those emotions. And of course, Stitch was adorable.
Did this need to exist? No. Would I recommend this to someone instead of the 2002 film? Absolutely not. But it’s still solid. And if this ends up being the way some kids become acquainted with these characters for the first time, I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Personally, when I find out a movie I love is a remake, I always try to watch the original. So, I don’t think the 2002 film is going to fade into obscurity or be overshadowed by this one. Hopefully, the live-action version encourages a new generation to seek out the animated film.
I have a tendency to complain about remakes, but I recognize that audiences are drawn to things they’re already familiar with. Every time I hear about another remake or sequel, I find myself wondering, “Who asked for this? Does anyone even want this?” But as I looked around tonight at an auditorium full of people in Stitch onesies, dressed in hula outfits, or carrying giant Stitch stuffed animals, I realized, evidently, these remakes are a source of excitement for a lot of people. No matter how much I complain about the constant flood of remakes, they’re never going to stop. And who am I to judge? One Hundred and One Dalmatians was my favorite movie as a kid, and I saw the live-action remake, 101 Dalmatians, in theaters in my Dalmatian onesie. But I will say, if Disney continues to focus on too many live-action remakes, eventually they’re going to run out of original animated films to remake in the first place.

I searched for this film everywhere and couldn’t find it. So, I tried reaching out to Augustine Frizzell. I 100% did not expect it to work. But she responded! She was incredibly nice and made the Vimeo link public for me. And I think that’s cool as hell! She’s such a gem. I will her work forever. Minor Setback is great, but I think the story works better as a feature-length film. Never Goin’ Back gives us more time to get better acquainted with the characters and become more invested in their journey.

“When a child first catches adults out—when it first walks into his grave little head that adults do not have divine intelligence, that their judgments are not always wise, their thinking true, their sentences just—his world falls into panic desolation. The gods are fallen and all safety gone. And there is one sure thing about the fall of gods: they do not fall a little; they crash and shatter or sink deeply into green muck. It is a tedious job to build them up again; they never quite shine. And the child’s world is never quite whole again. It is an aching kind of growing.”
— John Steinbeck, East of Eden

Elia Kazan’s adaptation of East of Eden is great, particularly the cinematography and James Dean’s performance. I understand the decision to focus on the latter portion of the novel, as the story is far too long to be effectively told in a single film. However, I believe Cathy Ames is one of the most fascinating characters in American literature, and the truncated version of the story doesn’t do her justice. I love that Kazan’s granddaughter, Zoe Kazan wrote the limited series. I can’t wait to see Florence Pugh tackle that role.

Do you really think life is beautiful?“

I’m surprised by how many people on here complained about the protagonist being unlikable. I thought that was the whole point. We’re not meant to feel sorry for him. We’re not meant to forgive him. We’re gradually discovering how and why he became such a reprehensible person. And the trauma he experienced doesn’t justify the person he turned out to be. He allowed his past to define him and consume him instead of reflecting on what happened and trying to move forward. I saw this film as a cautionary tale. All too often, people wonder, “Why is this happening to me?” instead of looking back and trying to understand how they turned into a person they no longer recognize, a person they now despise. The reverse chronology is why the film works. Because the most devastating aspect of the story is in the final segment, when we see how innocent and hopeful this man once was. It reminded me of this quote from It’s Such a Beautiful Day: “Scattered throughout the box were forgotten photos of himself as a young boy. He'd read once how each cell in the body replaces itself and dies as the years ; how everyone is slowly reconstructed out of continuously changing pieces. It depressed him how foreign the pictures seemed to him now, how his ridiculous ingrown cells had long ago stolen this happy dead kid's identity and with his own life made a complete mess of it.” The tragedy isn’t that this man commits suicide. The tragedy lies in recognizing what could have been. And the sociopolitical contexts adds a much deeper layer of meaning.

I’m shocked by how much this movie won me over! I was expecting a generic raunchy comedy, the kind I could just mindlessly watch without giving it my undivided attention. And don’t get me wrong, it’s still a cheesy, cringe-inducing comedy that hits a lot of familiar story beats and has a cartoonish antagonist. But it has a level of self-awareness that makes it easy to overlook its flaws. It’s also surprisingly wholesome and heartwarming. I didn’t think this movie would actually make me laugh, especially because I watched it at home by myself. But I found myself bursting out laughing numerous times. And when I wasn’t laughing out loud, I had a big, stupid grin on my face. I don’t know if other people will enjoy it as much as I did, but I thought it was silly, fun, sweet, charming, adorable, and oddly comforting. But maybe I’m just a sucker for stories about loners forming unlikely friendships and gaining confidence. I’m also a sucker for Peaches and MUNA needle drops. I added this movie to my watchlist as soon as I saw someone compare it to Paolo Pasolini’s Theorem. But I probably should have read the Letterboxd description first, because I wasn’t prepared for any of that…

I know for a fact I saw The ant in theaters when it was released in 2016. But I had almost no recollection of the movie itself. I actually had to check Letterboxd to confirm I really saw it—that’s how forgettable it was. So, my expectations for the sequel were as low as they could possibly get. All I wanted was to be mildly entertained. But, I ended up pleasantly surprised by The ant 2. I found myself laughing and smiling more than I anticipated. It was fun! But will I this one in another 8 and a half years? I guess we’ll find out eventually 🤷‍♀️

Please don't add everything on this list to your watchlist. There's no way anyone would like every single movie on this list.

Also, please let me know if I missed any because I didn't think to make this list until after I already made over 150 videos, so I'm sure I probably missed a few.

If you click the "read notes" button, I added the URLs for every video that each movie was mentioned in. If a movie was mentioned in multiple videos, the first URL on the list is the most recent video where it was mentioned and the last URL on the list is the first video where it was mentioned.

I made a Spotify playlist of songs based on the following criteria:
- Songs about movies (but not written for the soundtrack).
- Songs where the title is a movie reference even if the rest of the song has no connection to the movie.
- Songs with lyrics that include a line from a movie.

In some cases, the songs were clearly inspired by the book the movie was based on and not necessarily the movie itself. But I included those anyway.

open.spotify.com/playlist/6MRVuzAdPTJRHAgrCbJjqS

For this accompanying Letterboxd list, I also included album titles that are movie references even if there wasn’t one specific song I could add to the Spotify playlist.

I didn’t spend a lot of time on this, so I know I’m missing a ton of songs (and probably some of the most obvious ones). And some of these might be inaccurate. So, if anyone has any they want to add, let me know!

  • 2001: A Space Odyssey

The cover for their sophomore album Deja Entendu has an astronaut on it.
There are a lot of references to space in their songs whether it’s “space cadet” in the song "Welcome to Bangkok" or "cosmonaut" in "Luca".
In 2001, HAL sings Daisy Bell and Brand New has an album and song titled Daisy.
Before Science Fiction was released, there was a CD that was shipped out to some people who had pre-ordered the album and the booklet that came with it included quote from the chess match scene from 2001.
Mike Sapone always posts pictures about album anniversaries with the caption “Happy birthday Frank’ which is also a reference to 2001.
At one point there was a flyer about the leaked demos cassette that included a picture of Douglas Rain, who was the voice of HAL in 2001.

  • Close Encounters of the Third Kind

The CD that some people received when they pre-ordered Brand New’s fifth album, contained one 61-minute long track and the title of the track was actually coordinates to Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming. And coordinates leading to Devils Tower are an important part of the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. And in the booklet for Science Fiction there’s this image, which is a reference to the five tones from Close Encounters.

  • The Holy Mountain

The flyer about the leaked demos cassette includes a signature that looks like it says The Holy Mountain. There’s a lot of symbolism in The Holy Mountain that makes me think it could have been an inspiration for some Brand New lyrics especially the line “got my messiah impression I think I got him nailed down” in the song "Can’t Get it Out" because in The Holy Mountain one of the characters resembles Jesus so some of the locals cast an impression of his body and sell the resulting crucifixes.

  • The Devil and Daniel Johnston

The title The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me came from a conversation about musician Daniel Johnston.

  • Winter Light

A lot of Brand New’s songs feel evocative of someone struggling with or questioning their faith or religion. Winter Light feels like the film equivalent of Brand New's music because it touches on so many of the same themes and has a similar sense of melancholy.

  • Solaris

A lot of the themes in Brand New’s lyrics especially from their later albums remind me of Tarkovsky.
I’d pair the film Solaris with Deja Entendu because this film takes place in space and there’s the astronaut imagery from Deja’s artwork. But water is a crucial part of Solaris and water is a recurring motif throughout Deja Entendu.

  • Mirror

I’d pair the film Mirror with The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me because death was a pretty big influence on the album and the protagonist in Mirror is dying. And a few songs on this album mention mothers and the protagonist in Mirror is reflecting on his relationship with his mother. And both the album and this film seem to be the artists’ reflecting on their past mistakes.

  • The Sacrifice

I’d pair The Sacrifice with Daisy. The way water is a motif throughout Deja, fire seems to be a motif throughout Daisy. And fire is a pretty big part of The Sacrifice. And just the tone of this film feels comparable to Daisy’s vibe.

  • Stalker

I’d pair the film Stalker with Science Fiction. Not just because this film is a work of science fiction. But a lot of people consider Stalker Tarkovsky’s magnum opus and a lot of people feel similarly about Brand New’s Science Fiction. And Stalker is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi film about human wants and desires, hope, the way people want something to believe in, and I feel like a lot of those themes are represented in Brand New’s lyrics as well. The Writer in Stalker expresses concern about losing his inspiration, which reminds me of “Can’t Get it Out” and I know the song “451” is a reference to Fahrenheit 451 but there are a few lines in that song that remind me of Stalker.

  • Psycho

    "The Shower Scene"

Favorite Film of the Year for Every Year (1915 6y5e4p ????) https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/lexiamoriello/list/favorite-film-of-the-year-for-every-year-1/ letterboxd-list-34863261 Sat, 1 Jul 2023 08:07:50 +1200 <![CDATA[

This is based on the years listed next to each movie on Letterboxd, not the actual release dates in the United States.

I only included honorable mentions for ones where it was pretty much a tie because my lists of honorable mentions were getting out of control.

I made this list in my Notes app but didn't publish it until now and a bunch of my answers changed since then, so this list will probably change over time.

Also, this was way more difficult than I thought it would be.

These years were the hardest: 1960, 1962, 1988, 1992, 1993, 1994 (I wasted a solid 10 minutes trying to pick a movie for this year), 1997 (This was probably the hardest one), 1998, 1999 (Can we all just take a moment to appreciate what a spectacular year this was??), 2000, 2001, 2003, 2007, 2009

"brutal" is in this movie and a few of her songs deal with revenge. Plus, Talia Ryder is in it and she was in the "deja vu" music video.

www.instagram.com/reel/C9krHp3pMjn/

This one was difficult because Sabrina Carpenter already has so many albums and I think her style has evolved substantially over the years. Some songs are more emotional while others are bubbly and fun. I tried to keep this closer to the vibe of her more recent singles. And there are just too many songs to tie every movie to one song. And I could connect multiple songs to the same movie, so I tried not to just associate every single movie with a particular song and tried to make my picks based on vibes.
Just to clarify, I'm not saying all of these movies are good. Some of these are silly in a way that matches the vibe of song of Sabrina Carpenter's songs. And I felt like I should include the movies she stars in even if I haven't seen them.

  • Dick

"Nonsense" demonstrates how Sabrina Carpenter is great at coming up with playful puns and double entendres, so I think she'd love Dick. And I’m not just saying that because of the double meaning, which is definitely implied in her music. But I think Dick is the epitome of her vibe. It’s cute, fun, and feminine and everyone underestimates the main characters in this movie and acts like they’re just ditzy blondes. But the movie proves that they’re smarter than those dumb blonde stereotypes. And that’s how I feel about Sabrina Carpenter’s music. Some of her songs are just silly and bubbly. But she knows exactly what she’s doing.

  • Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

This just feels like Sabrina's vibe. Especially her song "Diamonds Are Forever"

  • Legally Blonde

People underestimating a woman for being stereotypically girly. It also depicts some drama between two women over a man who isn’t good enough for either of them. And the music video for "Sue Me" seems inspired by this movie.

  • Clueless

    This just fits the vibe

  • Fast Times at Ridgemont High

She has a song called "Fast Times"

  • Charlie's Angels

Seems like it inspired the music video for "Fast Times"

  • Kill Bill: Vol. 1

Seems like it inspired the music video for "Fast Times" and in an interview with Vogue, the director of the music video for "Please Please Please" Bardia Zeinali mentioned Kill Bill.
Jenna Ortega's nurse outfit in the "Taste" music video seems inspired by Elle Driver.

  • Reservoir Dogs

The director of the music video for "Please Please Please" Bardia Zeinali mentioned Reservoir Dogs as inspiration for Barry's style.

  • Pulp Fiction

The font in the "Please Please Please" music video

  • True Romance

Came to mind while watching the "Please Please Please" music video

Movie recommendations inspired by Chappell Roan 5o5w2s https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/lexiamoriello/list/movie-recommendations-inspired-by-chappell/ letterboxd-list-48064342 Wed, 26 Jun 2024 12:36:51 +1200 <![CDATA[

These are just movies that came to mind when I think of Chappell Roan and when I listen to her music. This was never intended to have 100 movies on it. I don't know how we got here.

  • But I'm a Cheerleader

It's fun, colorful, campy, and queer. And Chappell Roan said she wrote "HOT TO GO!" so she could live out her cheerleader fantasy.

  • Bring It On

Chappell Roan said she wrote "HOT TO GO!" so she could live out her cheerleader fantasy. She mentioned wanting to "bounce around on stage singing a song about being hot." And Bring It On literally opens with a cheer that goes "I'm sexy, I'm cute, I'm popular to boot. I'm bitchin', great hair. The boys all love to stare. I'm wanted, I'm hot. I'm everything you're not..."

  • Pink Flamingos

Chappell recreated Divine's look in this movie. But I think the movie itself doesn't really match the vibe of her music. And I think a lot of her fans would hate this movie.

  • Female Trouble

I know she dressed as Divine's character in Pink Flamingos, but I think Female Trouble feels closer to her vibe.
The way Dawn Davenport's parents refuse to buy her cha-cha heels reminds me of the chorus to "Pink Pony Club"
And lines like "The world of the heterosexual is a sick and boring life.” and “I wouldn't suck your lousy dick if I was suffocating and there was oxygen in your balls!” feel very Chappell Roan-esque to me.

  • Hairspray

It’s campy, colorful, fun, and the protagonist rapidly rises to fame. It also comes to mind because Tracy’s mom initially doesn’t approve of her daughter’s obsession with trying to be on TV, which makes me think of the chorus of “Pink Pony Club”

  • Josie and the Pussycats

Depicts women who were making music for years and their careers weren't taking off and then suddenly they were thrust into stardom practically overnight

  • Party Monster

It features dancing at clubs, dressing in drag. Chappell dressed in multiple outfits from this movie (she even mentions the Club Kids by name in the caption of one of her posts) and she said it was an inspiration for her aesthetic. "Pink Pony Club" vibes.
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmOnY4Btoks

  • To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar

This one came to mind because a lot of Chappell Roan's looks are inspired by drag queens. And the line "approval neither desired nor required" feels very Chappell Roan-esque because her stage persona seems unapologetically confident and doesn't require anyone else's approval.
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmOnY4Btoks

  • The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

This one comes to mind because it's about drag queens. Although this movie hasn't aged well and has some problematic/racist moments. This is another movie that she said inspired her aesthetic: www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmOnY4Btoks (I didn't see this video until after I already made the list)

  • The Birdcage

Robin Williams' character owns a drag club and his partner played by Nathan Lane is the star attraction

I thought it was too difficult to make a “top 10 of the decade” list, so I decided to just pick one movie for each year of the decade.

This is basically me revising all of my picks for “favorite movie of the year” from the past 10 years because I’m not going to bother updating each individual list. In retrospect, almost all of my favorites are different.

I’m still conflicted about my choice for 2018. Under the Silver Lake would have been my #1 for that year if its release date didn’t get pushed back multiple times.

I keep telling myself I need to stop trying to make year-end lists, because every time I go back and look at my lists from previous years, I'm constantly asking, "What was wrong with me?" or "what was I thinking?" I just change my mind way too frequently.

So, I'm just doing a top 10 instead of ranking all 100+ films that I've seen this year.

Also, if anyone thinks I shouldn't have World of Tomorrow Episode Two: The Burden of Other People's Thoughts on this list because it is a short film...If I took that film off the list, then the remaining films would still be ranked in the same order, only number 10 would be Song to Song.

Oh and I don't care about whether or not Twin Peaks: The Return is considered a film (I'm just grateful that we got more Twin Peaks in 2017), but if you consider it to be a film then that's my real number 1.

  1. World of Tomorrow Episode Two: The Burden of Other People's Thoughts
  2. Call Me by Your Name
  3. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
  4. The Disaster Artist
  5. A Ghost Story
  6. Lucky
  7. Good Time
  8. Get Out
  9. Lady Bird
  10. The Florida Project

Top 50 Favorite Films of 2016 13m3z https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/lexiamoriello/list/top-50-favorite-films-of-2016/ letterboxd-list-1374955 Wed, 18 Jan 2017 01:49:51 +1300 <![CDATA[

Since it’s been almost an entire month since 2016 ended, my ability to care has completely gone out the window. The only part of this list that I’m actually 100% set on is the top 10 or top 15, the rest of the list is a loosely ranked, jumbled mess.

If there’s anything I learned in 2016 it’s that I loved a lot of films that most people hated, which leads me to believe that either I’ve lowered my standards or I’ve learned to see the good in everything. I’d like to think it’s the latter. But whatever. The words “favorite” and “best” aren’t synonymous, and if I was ranking the films that I thought were the best this would be a different list entirely.

  1. La La Land
  2. American Honey
  3. Arrival
  4. The Lobster
  5. The Neon Demon
  6. Manchester by the Sea
  7. Everybody Wants Some!!
  8. Swiss Army Man
  9. A Monster Calls
  10. Jackie
