Some of the most claustrophobic, nauseating and disorienting digital images I’ve seen, this gnarled and jagged editing contrasting with the sheer brilliance of then sun. That which gives all life and can incinerate it all in a second. What Boyle achieves here is nothing short of immense, this kind of grand, overly ambitious and, yes, sentimental sci-fi that’s also direct, focused, and overwhelming in its chamber-like terror. The bleakest and most desperate sci-fi, beauty in annihilation, only gives me life out of sheer force of will.
