Rewatched this on a 7 hour flight. Hadn’t seen it since high school. My main takeaways are that it’s a disappointing follow up to Butch Cassidy, it doesn’t have near enough Newman, and it feels pretty long. But man, it still is a lot of fun and has a great vibe. When Newman is in it, he’s so great.
McKay made a fishnet out of echo-chamber Twitter threads. What did he catch? Global warming! Covid! Trump! Science! Capitalism! Celebrity! Just a cacophony of every tweet, SNL sketch, talk-show monologue, and celebrity sound-bite you’ve heard over the past 5 years, and with the same arrogance and lack of self-awareness you’d expect.
And that’s not even talking about the editing, dialogue, and Mark Rylance. Yikes.
