Haneke’s technically magnificent and emotionally abrasive masterpiece is a coolly controlled, parasitic love story between mother and daughter. Huppert’s performance grips like a tightly coiled vice. No one else could have played Erika.

]]>An oblique, penetrating, and relentlessly bleak exercise in arthouse dread. I'm not entirely sure all of its artistic choices landed, but there's something here that is unclassifiable and hard to shake off.
]]>The moment when Durga and Apu see a train for the first time is one of the most extraordinarily beautiful sequences in the history of cinema. Breathtaking. I must seek out the rest of this trilogy.

]]>I haven't seen this in 15 years — still an electrifying, firecracker of a film. An assault of style and anger.
]]>A tense, sweltering and audacious genre hybrid—part period drama, part jukebox musical of Black music, part vampire film— with great performances and a mind-bending and daring central sequence that seems to span and stretch across time. Coogler’s best film to date.

]]>While Marco Berger's films often explore the liminal places of male desire, The Astronaut Lovers spin on the (faux)romantic comedy feels like a distinct shift. Moving away from the cold, harsh edges of Horseplay, this film embraces a warmer, looser, and softer atmosphere. The dialogue, though frequently crude and rambling, is also teasingly suggestive, charming and sexy, and the electric chemistry between the two leads is undeniable. Wonderful.
]]>I loved this—it shows a real progression from Tinta Bruta. A queer, blisteringly sexy, and beautifully kinky take on the erotic thriller, it draws inspiration from the lurid thrills and impressionist framing of De Palma, Hitchcock, Yann Gonzalez, Almodóvar, and Paul Verhoeven. I need more arty, trashy gay erotic thrillers in my life.

]]>Heartfelt performances and gritty, shimmering vérité camerawork—especially a couple of mesmeric long takes— elevates this tale of Manila street hustlers. Its gradual, languid descent into a surrealistic dreamscape is gorgeously realised.
]]>A scrappy, anarchic, and glistering lesbian pop melodrama—A Star Is Born via Glitter, but directed by John Waters, with homages to Carrie and songs about fisting. Feverish, chaotic fun.

]]>An extremely moving, powerful and timely addendum to Paris Is Burning which misses a significant opportunity to interrogate Venus' mistreatment by her family while she was still alive. The few scenes that hint at this are quickly glossed over. There's pieces of the story missing here.

]]>It's not perfect, but this was an irresistibly charming remix of Ang Lee's original. Youn Yuh-jung comfortably steals every scene.
