Leave the World Behind

The inevitable revisionism at some point in the next 20 years when people realise this is a masterpiece will be one of the most cathartic moments of my life. Undoubtedly, in my mind, a film that will go down as the definitive masterpiece of the 2020’s, not due to it being the best film of this era, but the most period defining one - acting as a time capsule of the western psyche which will be fascinating to reflect upon…

Well, I just turned 20, about 10 minutes ago - the same time I finished rewatching this. One director had to have the responsibility of rounding out my teenage years, and I happily handed over that honour to Greta Gerwig. The last thing I ever did as a teenager was watch Lady Bird.

(3rd Watch)

Felt different for me this time. It’s so brief, and yet so potent - in fact, it’s the abruptness of the film that makes it so devastating. The fleeting moments of a love affair poisoned by its environment. Cold War is almost relentlessly despairing throughout - but these shared moments glimmer with an irresistible hope that burns you for holding on too tight.

A stunning piece of cinema. Fleeting, but timeless… as is life. Pawel is one of our best, without a doubt.

Becoming a Werewolf

Jesse Eisenberg’s directorial debut (lol). DVD extra for Cursed (which is a good Craven flick by the way), with a mockumentary style. Quite funny with appearances from Jesse, Nicotero and Craven himself.

I personally think Kate Winslet and the old man should have fucked.

Simply put, the greatest horror film of all time. Every second of Alien is in line with my definition of what a horror film should be.

Alien is a masterpiece in the horrors of the unseen, while also boasting perfect execution in the moments when we do actually see the horrors of the film. It exhibits expert patience and flawless pacing. The twists and turns and genius reveals weaved in along the way are simply masterful. The false senses of…
