]]>probably a bit overstuffed but i firmly believe this is one of his most beautifully written on top of being his most stylistically ambitious, especially for this new era. he seems so hesitant about going full meta but ends up there anyway with Howitzer consistently toying with what should and shouldn't find itself in the final publication. almost reads like a fantasy to leave it all out there and die before seeing the consequences. this all makes it more compelling than him going head-first into the meta-modernism of Asteroid City, personally. that final "what happens next?" goes crazy knowing the direction he goes in after this. i've always wondered what that travel-guide section was really doing in here, but that "All grand beauties withhold their deepest secrets" line really reads like the crux of this whole thing. not mid, just a mid-life crisis

]]>surprised this isn’t talked about more often as one of spike lee’s essentials. incredibly layered, his most expressionistic from what i’ve seen, and a bit of a sampler platter for him as a filmmaker. thought ray allen was actually outstanding, thought the milla jovovich stuff was a total drag

]]>This will change monthly, probably. Notes attached to each film.
Like being hit by a giant wave in the ocean. An experience that'll take a moment to absorb and something I still haven't recovered from. Perhaps something I never will recover from. Influential from a filmmaking perspective, impactful on s deeply personal level. One of the most powerful and necessary pieces of film I've ever experienced.
This last decade I fell in love with film deeper than I ever had before, and I owe Moonlight for a lot of this. Not only through it's flawless script did I find myself emotionally connecting to a life so distant from mine, but it's approach stylistically gave me an indescribable yet nostalgic feeling I haven't found anywhere else.
Realest thing I've seen this decade.
This helped me understand myself and everyone around me in the most obnoxious way possible. Wouldn't have it any other way.
I don’t know how I forgot this one while putting this list together. I’ll add some stuff to say about it later!
Similar to Moonlight, one of the most perfect pieces of work to come out of the last decade. A film that feels like it knows everything about the artistic experience which is ironic considering how young Chazelle was when he made it. I'll be talking about it for years, a classic.
I really don't want to write about The Tree of Life. In fact, I never want to write about The Tree of Life. This hit something inside of me, it understood something very personal. I want to be fragile with this film, I will not be watching it very often, maybe never again. It feels irresponsible to try and understand all of it.
As a film, it may not be as ground-breaking or as complex as the rest of the work on this list, but this film meant so much to me when it initially came out. I am extremely lucky that this film exists in my life.
my favorite comedies

]]>Annual summer movie challenge where I try to watch a lot of classic movies that I have not yet seen. This year I’m cutting the goal in half just because I will actually have a life this summer and am definitely not going to be able to watch 100 movies. Here is the current list, it will obviously shift and change as time goes on because I’ll probably see a lot of new releases in theatres that I wasn’t expecting to see. (not ranked)
