Is it just me or was it really hard to care for any of the characters in this film? Something about 2024 movies and my inability to immerse myself in the plots or characters, they all just feel so lackluster. Everything I watch just reminds me that there is a way better version of this type of story out there, like this is all just good promo of past films and the glory days. I'm going to forget about this movie very quickly!

Terry Gilliam is on oneeee! Wow, I know he still had to fight to get a budget without studios meddling in his filmmaking process but still what a time to be alive that these kinds of films were casually in theaters. It's always an experience when a film is centered around a dream, memory, or moment the protagonist is confused about. Reminds me of Memento, Mr.Nobody, even The Sixth Sense, getting a headache in the best way possible. While the characters here weren't my favorite, besides Brad Pitt being the most unhinged I've ever seen him, the plot was so layered and slow burn that I was definitely invested in trying to understand what is or isn't reality. Tis why I love sci-fi, the world building is always elite! So far, this man has one of the most wondrous, how did that happen? and holy shit filmographies ever!

The amount of times I've seen Natalie in a pink wig on Tumblr, finally saw the damn context of that! First and foremost, I fucking hate that woman!!! I'm not even sorry y'all. I haven't seen Black Swan yet BUT anything this woman has been in she fucking sticks out so much and gets on all of my nerves that I don't like V for Vendetta because of her. She has the insufferable Pe voice in every single role and just comes off as soooo forced, I will never ever understand her fame. Like maybe she was cute as a kid but it didn't last! The highlight for me was definitely our Croupier king Clive Owen, what a legend! The moment he went, "Thanks" with the thumbs up, amazing! I want to see him in more movies, I understand why people are sad he was never Bond. Anyways, this has play written all over it and I honestly like that they did not try to alter the dialogue to be more movie. It was very entertaining watching these 4 be drama queens with dialogue like that and I feel like modern actors don't get those kinds of opportunities as often, just being uncanny and over the top the whole time as a style. Its funny though that some people think this is profound, idk I took it more as super exaggerated and theatrical which is why I enjoyed it in the first place...

Gonna keep up the romance watches this month regardless of how cursed a movie is!

I swear to God I was thinking about Jim and then he popped up in here! Very cool! Yup this is where my Pierrot obsession was born folks 🥺🤹 forever obsessed w that character and will not settle in life until I have completed a project that’s inspired by him cause he is truly WATER SIGN REPPPP. The scene where he sang his heart out, rhyming Angina w Malina (raspberry) and Malvina, I gotta watch that at least once a month seriously tis art. Baby boy sang his heart out (mega water sign energy) to have Malvina go like look over there yall hear something? (Mega Virgo energy) and Burtatino is just brain rot as a character (fire sign energy). But man this is what I mean by my kinda no thoughts head empty cinema, and I know it’s a bit much at times and too long but I don’t think anyone’s beats the Ruskies in of capturing that unexplainable childhood magic. Disney comes very close but they kinda kill me on the inside w their orphan character plot lines :,). But thissss the ending where reality breaks and they sing the iconic theme song to the crowd of lil kids and they’re the damn actors cheering to their own performance…kinda makes me teary eyed. It felt like finishing a puppet show and seeing the people behind the magic and it just makes me so happy!!!! Not to mention them running into fields ahhhhh just so pure and so unapologetically nonsensically fairytale!!! Anddd they’re in his music box!?! @ world can I please bring back this energy through my work :,) I think the world needs this again cause we dying on the inside a little too much.

Hehe they were definitely dads tho this is so drag and campy again howww is this being made in that era will never cease to amaze me.

Such a lovely film, Hal Hartley has my attention. His intricacies, choice of dialogue, shades of pale blues, and Adrienne Shelly <3 I love how it simultaneously explored the trust that makes or breaks relationships not just in love but in parental dynamics. The difference in Maria's character from start to end is beautiful and Matthew Slaughter was giving me English major energy, I too would gift someone a Thesaurus lol.

Cute but not as amazing as everyone is saying. I'm not gonna lie I have an impending doom feeling rn in regards to anything that relates to technology because we currently have a shithead running one of the most influential countries in the world with another shithead serving as his spokesperson and this shithead #2 named his kids literal numbers and wants to put chips in our brains eheheheh and implement AI into everything sooooooo its kinda hard for me to have any empathy with robots. It was cute when Walle did it but this is a lil too close to reality now so I'm kinda scared mom. And as an English major y'all I can't even begin to explain how much I hate AI ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I was into it a lot more in the beginning, was giving me if Castle in the Sky robots were given their own film but then it kinda got too American on our asses and simplified and obvious which isn't always a bad thing but definitely not as interesting. I wanted more time with the duckling and robot struggling without dialogue but then snarky fox came in and narrated all of our feelings. But those animals were sooooo cute that I was making sounds the whole time :-) also seeing hints of Dreamworks no chill mode with jokes about a baby Opossum getting eaten, still have PTSD from the ducking and crocodile from Madagascar btw. My second Woody Allen film ever, was curious about it since I loved Mia's performance in Romy and Michelle. Although I really liked the idea of this film even down to the chorus and Greek fantasy elements of it (which gotta say how Sagittarius of him, again randomness thats oddly endearing and a character who gets too into his side quest that he neglects his main arc) gosh darn I can't deny how hard it is to separate art from artist in this case. I'm going to make the most cursed comparison but Shane Dawson also wrote himself as an charming clearly not so hot man that somehow still gets babes and I'm sorry but that shit doesn't age well especialllllly with Woody. I wouldn't even be saying any of this if he hadn't tacked on the sex in the end, cause lets be real, she would not. It was cute as a platonic relationship but of course he could write that in so why wouldn't he? I have a feeling all his films are going to exude that, how did this old ass fool get these girlies? I'll still watch em but already rolling my eyes. Still like Mia but nah that Oscar was not earned, her voice really took me out and I don't think I was fully buying that character. Helena extra here and just felt like she was a side plot for no reason. Also for how much we hear about his son being a smart we sure as hell never see why.

I feel like Noah Baumbach w Greta is kinda doing this in of energy but modern. Honestly all overrated, when you've seen how Europeans write and depict human interactions, this stuff feels hella forced idk.

I really appreciate the fact that they framed the story around a parent letting go of their child and acknowledged that humans and otters were different yet the same. Meaning we should be more empathetic and understanding of nature since we are part of it but we sure as hell act like we are above it but also we live and behave in different parts of it hence let me make sure this otter can survive in the wild and catch its own fish. They did not bank off the viral potential and instagram page this otter could have had because sometimes these docs can be so focused on the cuteness of the animal that we start thinking its a plushie. Also I love that it ended with him exploring her environment, again, acknowledging that it has its own place and existence outside of their dynamic. Beautiful!

This review may contain spoilers.

Now this is a satire! Robert Altman is blowing my mind so far, seen two films but need to watch his entire filmography! This movie has such a unique aura, its full of tension through its entire runtime but then has many moments that feel like we are seeing a TMZ esq paparazzi video of studio executives having lunch in LA and stumbling upon Andy McDowell or John Cusack. It really be like that folks, I saw Timothee Chalamet and Dakota Johnson in a fucking ice cream shop and ya they were together in line. Jennys, if you know you know lol.

The ending felt like an ending Hollywood would have slapped onto a movie just cause, because this whole film was very meticulous and aware of its genre and then it just had a cartoonishly happy ending with dreamy visuals, which is also what happened, line to the line, with the movie R. Grant had written (love seeing him in anything heh). It was really pathetic to see how sold out everyone was willing to be for some money and attention which is sadly true. A seedy ass business full of seedy ass people who throw away art if it could make them a quick buck instead. As Bojack Horseman said, "Closure is a madeup thing by Steven Spielberg to sell movie tickets".

Cursed as fuck to watch a biopic in general let alone 2 in one day let alone one being about Trump. Jeremy Strong could get me to watch anything tbh! I thought this was going to be a lot worse but it was a character study of how Roy Cohn made a monster and he definitely realized that in the end. I only know Trump as a president and as what he is in media in the recent years like I hadn't even watched Home Alone 2 y'all. But I had no idea he rose to success through a friendship he had with one of the worst people in America at the time and that makes a whole lot of sense. It felt like a retelling that was not trying to get us to have certain political views which was what I thought it would be which would be very dumb!

Buttt my stars fade due to the third act doing what I dreaded it would do, having cringe forced in scenes to scream at the audience, "WE HATE TRUMP TOO" and "HAHA HES GONNA BE PRESIDENT LETS HINT AT THAT WINK WINK WINK MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN HAH WE SMART", felt veryyyy forced in and made the nuanced and character driven storytelling slump into the final act. They were already good at acting like shitty people guys, its very evident that we are not supposed to like the billionaire class of folk that run our country, and if you do idk what to say.

I feel so bad that Sebastian Stan isn't getting invites to Actors on Actors for taking on this role though. How stripped down to the simplest levels of intellect is everyone right now if playing a controversial political figure is what makes you an outcast, Trump's shitiness aside, he's a fucking actor you're supposed to play horrid people, you're supposed to call attention to the corrupted ass world we live in through art. And I think now more then ever, we should all be expressing that in whatever form we want to. Hats off to these two leads especially Stan for not doing an impersonation!

This was probably one of the most boring movies ever ever, all its doing in my book is being pretty and like a Lana Del Rey music video which is not enough for a film. I would love a film called Lana actually Elizabeth just like he did w Spencer. Anyways, I don't think Angelina acts well, she just felt like Angelina here doing an accent and calling herself a diva every now and then, a very forgettable performance and film indeed. It feels like all he's doing is glamorizing her pain through aesthetics and made up visions which amounts to me as a viewer not really feeling anything at the end of it all.

Maybe this is because I've been watching so many 2024 movies back to back and feeling dead inside that this felt like a comedic masterpiece and got many actual laughs out of me but it still freaking did! The contrast between Bob and Dr.Leo was a hoot and I felt like this could still be relevant as commentary on society and how medical field peeps are egocentric and thinking they're hot shit because they understand things that we don't by taking advantage of their power over patients. That can apply to Bob too cause everyone here pity loved him and treated him like he was a child when that was not at all what he was. But they were also living for him because he was so much more lively and vulnerable, literally the Fruity Pebbles cereal vs. Raisin Bran. Those puppets took me out in the best way possible and I AM ON VACATION!!! A Looney Tunes cartoon dynamic, felt like Bugs Bunny and the Hunter cause he really couldn't get rid of him. I KNEW HE'D MARRY HIS SISTER LOL I'm gonna say it but it felt like Trisha Paytas marrying Moses haha okay I'm done.

Finalllly eating well with a gothic novel adaption that stays true to the gothicness and romanticism and horror of it all! Eggers is a kinda director whose vision and style excites me so even though he's remaking a classic here, I am eager to see what his vision brings. I am a qualified sucker for the Death and the Maiden trope so I was giddy to see that embraced here and I adore characters like Ellen so much! I can't deny that I was initially nervous about Lily Rose's casting but she did her damn part well here! Especially with how much she had to act with her body, thank god my theater didn't laugh cause I swear!

Love love love that Orlok is the embodiment of her suppressed desires. Love love love that Willem Dafoe is the only one who truly saw her, even if it took one interaction to realize this. Genuinely stunned by the sequence with Thomas entering the castle, it looked straight out of a dream. Same with the scene where Ellen looks out the window and calls for Orlok PHEW beautiful! Anyways I can't deny my bias to this all but I am just happy theres a fellow cancer out there, referring to Eggers lol, living out his freaky cancer life adapting these stories and being very honest in all interviews to a point where it takes people out, cancerisms man. Keep it going cause I will always be here for more :,))) heard his next movie is about knightssss, my dream man my dream.

I have such a vivid memory of this random night as a child when I couldn't sleep and my mom happened to be awake too. We sat in our living room couch in the apartment I lived in at the time and I distinctly her wearing a very 2000s robe with rose patterns on it. And this film happened to be on at the time and for some reason the scene where Christine is being enchanted by Phantom with the iconic song, that stuck with me. I mustered the guts to read it in HS during my horror book era and garnered the courage to watch it because I have a bf and I can hold his hand. Was not as scary as anticipated but this film is all in its energy, the performances, and the writing being so accurate due to the screenplay being written by the author himself. A true horror classic I would love to see on the big screen one day and I will always have a soft spot for 70s energy when its done well (not just sex for days)

Whyyy does this have such a high rating? I think 2024 solidified the fact that I can't trust Letterboxd ratings anymore. Or maybe because I don't watch that many animes it wasn't for me but no I love animation in all forms so...this was very meh. It tried to make me feel things that it never earned, the relationship it focused on was primarily conveyed through montages and like 2 interactions that were always about mangas, so when the reveal came out of nowhere I just didn't care at all. It felt like an easy way to make me feel wahhh but I felt whatever. It was pretty cruel too and I didn't like the direction it took with a character who was her own worst enemy at times and was finally striving to make a change on her own and thats what she gets? okay...Is this all just supposed to be a metaphor for the artist's obsession and nature? Like I don't get why its so highly rated seriously. I'm just glad it was short cause me no like watching things I don't care for. I feel like 2024 films have made me die on the inside cause I feel bad that I don't care but I can't lie either.

Why did the main character remind me so much of my ten year old brother, when you ask him to do something he does it with like 16% consciousness and effort so you regret ever having asked him in the first place. Now placing this dynamic with an endearing and tough grandma works well of course, how can one not enjoy their interactions and growing relationship. It reminded me a lot of The Farewell which is honestly one of my favorites. What I took most from this film though is the patriarchal dominance in families that does women so fucking dirty. First we have the grandmother who goes to her brother for the first time in her life for help and she gets completely shat on and abandoned, even when she brings up a marriage that was forced by her very parents who left her with nothing, she is still treated like a miserable thing who is not worth any pity. Then we have her continuing this cycle in a way by giving her youngest son the home, not earned for certain, but we all know the daughter deserved it most. I felt like M. was hope for that to change, though his intentions were dishonest in the beginning, he eventually grows and even grants Grannie's biggest wish. I really feel like our generation can stop these familial standards we have let rule over everything for way too long. We need to start questioning and changing them now. Will always enjoy the poetry of the beginning mirror the ending, don't scatter those flowers boy!

LOVVVVEEE the scenes of her with the snapchat filter lol what a legend. Also we are making memories after the line the daughter dropped was very funny. I really want to watch more Thai films now like how am I so late to that?

This review may contain spoilers.

I'm not going to lie, I was initially not very into this film. I feel like I have to be in a very specific mood to enjoy super slow plots and visuals, and preferably in a movie theater so that my mind doesn't start lingering but when I saw this as a full picture, all the slow build up made total sense. Hamaguchi is so intentional with everything without being in your face about his choices, he trusts the audience into connecting elements as well as leaving room for one to have a personal interpretation of events/feelings without a wrong or right answer. In an age where the destruction of nature is at its utmost urgency and we can literally feel capitalism and corporations greed and need to milk potentially burning everything to the ground without the average people reaping any reward from it, this felt very relevant. We are truly living in such critical times and we don't treat it as critical as we should be, its genuinely a what have we come to? to the maximum.

This film puts you in a trance, reminds you of the beauty we can be surrounded by and be a part of, shows people who actually work hard to maintain this lifestyle, and then abruptly shakes everything up through a scene that is an open discussion between the two sides. The out of touch city people and the villagers, and I really like that he chose glamping because it perfectly embodies the fakeness of corporate intentions, the inconsideration even when they act as though they care. Cause wtf is the point of glamping really? Just put out a fucking tent or don't, why do we have to yassify camping lol. Anyways, that part really woke me up and we switched POVS to those two characters who through conversations channeled a more modern citizen and we also saw the real man behind everything but also not really because he hid through a video call.

When it gets to the final segments, the lingering and repetitive tragic soundtrack really coming into play, it is definitely rewarding. I thought a lot about the ending and my final understanding of it is that evil genuinely does not exist in nature, because there is purpose and intention behind every single thing that happens. Prey predator all of it is part of a cycle but we disrupted it and are now paying the price for it. We are the evil but we are also part of nature, we just love pretending that we are above it and that is why we are dying. We too attack those that we see as threats to our offsprings, we too act on instinct in moments of danger. The death of Hanna represents the start of this pollution that we embody that will eventually urbanize this village and strip it of its authenticity. That shot of the deer and its wound will stay with me for a while.

This review may contain spoilers.

Initially gave darker Amelie with its humor and attention to detail with narration but thennn Miss Grace got insufferable and I shall explain why!

#JUSTICEFORGILBERTTTT Y'ALLLLL homegirl was living with decent foster parents who fed her, provided a roof, let her collect snails for days, and she also had the fabulous Miss Pinky as company who reminded me so much of my favorite teacher in highschool love you Miss Ritvo! And she still had the decency to be dreary all the time. Oh my goddddd Gilbert was 1. A fucking child slave literally forced into labor everyday and into prayer 2. Was not allowed to use fire which was his favorite thing ever or magic 3. HAD TO WATCH THE LAST REMAINING RELIC AND PIECE OF HIS DECEASED MOTHER BURNED BEFORE HIS EYES 4. Magnets all day and just off 4. made absolute pennies and wasn't even allowed to keep em cause foster papa bought booze 5. had shitty ass brothers besides Ben 6. but was then fucking electrocuted almost to death cause he's gay jesus 7. anddd to top this all off left to fucking be burnt alive and I swear he complained like 3% of what Grace did.

Heres the problemo here, Grace is the isolated one, recoils into her shell and never acts on her feelings. Instead wallowing in her misery and choosing to be dismissive to all woes. Gilbert is the opposite energy she needed her whole life, acts on instinct, lets animals go because of how free he is and how much he values freedom, and loves fire which is associated with rebirth and destruction. It was giving me the son exudes the dad and I'm assuming since Grace loved snails like her mom that applied to her as well. I mean the whole smile thing showed that they were two halves of a whole, and he was always there to protect her too. But babes SHE COULD'VE FLOWN HIM IN LIKE 10 YEARS EARLIER INSTEAD OF BURYING HERSELF IN SNAIL MERCH ITS NOT LIKE HES IN A DIFFERENT COUNTRY JEEZ. ALSO W HOW MANY SWARMA ROLLS SHE WAS SPENDING MONEY ON TOO UR BROTHER IS LIVING OFF APPLE CORES UGH. I'm glad that she acknowledged this flaw of hers but gosh it was a little too late into the film and she had already pissed me off to the maximum by always wanting me to pity problems she could've soooo fucking solveddd. Its not that deep darling. Also why didn't Pinky call her out on all this nonsense? Especially the horrid husband who fed her sausages you can smell that kinda shit from a mile away...literallly stench of weiners all day.

Anywayssss ending aka reunion was a little late for me and didn't feel fully fulfilling but thank fucking god Gilbert was alive cause again he is king and if he had been in Grace's shoes he would've already reunited with her, flew them to Paris, become a magician and ed her to be a filmmaker literally in 1/4 of the spam of time it took Grace ugh. I do love their contrasts though, animation was super fun and I will always be in awe of stop motion, and Sylvia was very cute. Also shoutout to the quote about going forward and it tying to snails being unable to ever go backwards and tread on the same track, how ironic for Grace to have that message there the whole damn time huh.

Onnnne more thing, Sarah Snook!!! Wowowow amazing voice acting from her here Shiv Royyy delivers and she deserves so much more appreciation <3

Bittersweet :,) beautifully animated, anddd time for me to astrologically assign characters that no one asked for! Bird was giving me Aries on a tantrum, took control but was butt hurt the minute someone made a comment and was over it too but had the auraaa, the lemur is definitely a Leo miss mirror always by its side and very attentive to the treasures and objects of beauty, dog is probably a Sag or something optimistic as fuck and on the right side in the team, Cat is giving water sign- initially shy and careful around the other animals but then starts to trust them and is hella loyal. Lastly capybara is a Taurus cause he just chilling and eating and is unbothered nor bothering anyone hehe.

Okay back to serious mode, I'm so happy this is getting the accolades it deserves! The director practically did everything :,) and his efforts show! This put me in a trance and made me think about the earth a lot which I think we should all be doing a lot more! Also the bird scene, if you know you know cause woah. Exudes a movie I would see in a plane and forget about it heh. My favorite part is the fact that the "nuns" and women are self aware of their invisibility but Rosselini's character caused all the domino effects here. Showed Lawrence the proof that Tremblay was guilty, had that speech that stirred the pot about him flying out that lady to sabotage, and thennn we have the winning priest's secret. That one was sort of out of nowhere and I honestly still don't know how to fully feel about it. Still though still, why do all these movies make me feel dead inside? I don't know y'all I feel numb!

  • Interview with the Vampire

Tom Cruise as Lestat is perfection! Especially after having read the book, they genuinely could not have picked a better actor. For me he feels like Damon Salvatore's blueprint, who is another character I ire. I will eternally grieve the fact that he did not get to play him again in a sequel.

  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Kylo Rennnnn, one of my favorite characters of all time. Adam Driver is definitely responsible for that fact. I feel like Ryan Johnson understood what made the character special. A lost prince archetype, and I loved how they subverted the tropes here and Rey came to rescue him from the tower/ evil witch (Snoke). The delivery of lines like "Neither are you", "Yes I am", the way he pleads with his eyes as he whispers "Please". Heck even the moments he is yelling at Hux, "BLOW THAT PIECE OF JUNK OUT OF THE SKY". I just wish he was in the last film more.

  • Gladiator
  • It's a Wonderful Life

Unapologetic Women (MY FAVORITES) w1u1v https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/kryloren/list/unapologetic-women-my-favorites/ letterboxd-list-28543041 Mon, 28 Nov 2022 17:30:48 +1300 <![CDATA[

Not a manic pixie dream girl but quite the opposite. Women that are flawed but so perfectly themselves. Place them into any world, country, and time period but they will remain the same. Infectiously true to who they are as well as true to their hearts. I look up to women that can cry from a broken heart but stand their ground if need be. Multifaceted and timeless.
Usually paired with a byronic hero who they transform, but the same is applied to them because they blossom from love. They open up from the acceptance of their heart/ understanding and become unstoppable.

That one scene from Beginners reminded me of Before Sunrise and I could not help it. Will probably only have these two films here but oh well.
