As one of only a couple dozen movies I have memories of as a kid, this surprisingly holds up fairly well- I only recently watched the original, so I didnt know this was a remake which prob boosted it in my eyes back then.
The good: better action, being an actual fish out of water fits the story better, china's a more interesting setting, romantic relationship is developed more gradually, action is better, being able to understand more than 75%…

some of the action is decent (alley debt fight is the best one) but a lot of it aint it
All the melodrama is super rushed and even if it wasnt it would still be bad
Trauma around brother and conflict over whether one should fight is not explored at all
Tournament is given way too little screen time
Should just be a vehicle for fun action and charismatic performances so if the action is overall average at best and the acting is bad (with the writing doing the actors no favors) it just doesnt work
Jackie chan and ralph macchio barely matter

felt like the setup was excellent and really enjoyed the dynamic of guy having to face a better version of his old self but his double dramatic escalation with the assault + stabbing immediately followed by a time jump and an abrupt end didnt feel satisfying/thematically cohesive
