Kaleb Freeman’s review published on Letterboxd:
Now after seeing Dune: Part Two a second time, I can truly say this is one of the best sequels of all time. Everything that made the first Dune special is now better in every single way in the sequel.
Denis Villenueve is a true master. The run he's been on since Incendies is all time. Obviously this movie continues his streak. Dune Part 2 is one of the best looking and sounding movies that I've ever witnessed on the big screen. Greg Fraser's cinematography was magnificent in part one and he somehow improves. The action is significantly better than the first one. In Part One, other than Paul's last fight with Jamis, none of the action really stood out. In Part 2, from the top of my head at least 4 amazing action scenes that all feel different and all stand out on their own.
Now Hans Zimmer, we are not worthy. No wonder his Creator score was so forgettable since he put all his effort into making another all time great score. The Paul/Chani love theme is honestly one of my favourite musical scores of all time. I haven't heard a love theme this good since Attack of the Clones.
Finally the cast, oh my goodness. While the acting in the first movie is good, the returning cast plus new all bring their A-game. I know this won't happen but if it were up to me I would have Chalamet, Zendaya, Fergusson and Butler all nominated.
This is the best I've ever seen Timothee Chalamet. Going from the boy who just wants to learn to the man who eventually wants to become the Emperor is a true sense of range. Paul Atreides is the perfect blend between Anakin Skywalker and Eren Yeager (Attack on Titan). He's a character that is so ionate and is a leader you can see people following even though you know he will take you down the wrong path.
Like Chalamet, this is the best I've ever seen Zendaya. First off how does she have more on screen chemistry with Chalamet than with Tom Holland? Zendaya brings a great confidence to Chani but also brings a genuine caring and loving spirit. She really is the heart and soul of the movie. Man the last shot of the movie you just feel her pain. She feels like she got played and is now alone. It's quite heartbreaking.
Rebecca Fergusson is so good. I don't think she's given a weak performance in her career. I haven't seen Doctor Sleep but all I know is that she is an antagonist. Going from a caring mother to the new Reverend Mother needs a very talented actress. This is by far one of the creepiest antagonists that I've seen in a long time.
Now for Austin Butler. He does a complete 180 with playing Elvis to one of the most cruel and viscous villain that I've ever seen. I do wish he was in the movie a little more but his introduction from when he gets the blade to the end of the gladiator arena is all time. Paul and Feyd-Rautha's fight at the end was awesome and really showed off two of the best fighters in the galaxy go head to head.
Florence Pugh, Charlotte Rempling and Javier Bardem are also major standouts who all bring something new to the table.
I have very few negatives that are mostly nitpicks. The last big battle when the Fremen attack the Emperor's army, it should have been longer. I guess I could see Villeneuve wanted to focus more on the final knife fight which is fair. I also wish we had more time with certain characters especially The Emperor and his daughter. They seem like their importance needed more screen time. Lastly I hate to say this because I love the guy but it felt like Dave Bautista was just yelling. He's become a really good actor and you see glimpses in this movie but he was a little disappointing.
Honestly this is the proudest I've felt as a Canadian in a long time. Thank you Denis for an unforgettable experience with creating another epic masterpiece.
