Dustin Hoffman and Roy Scheider play very different brothers, one a college student, the other has a more mysterious job.  I can’t if I’ve ever watched this before, of course there’s one unforgettable and famous scene that everyone is familiar with, but I’m pretty sure this was my first watch of this that I can .  John Schlesinger directed this film which has a lot of intrigue, government agents, Nazi war criminals, diamond smuggling and more.  Hoffman is great as the increasingly paranoid student as he tries to evade/escape the agents whose interrogation methods are quite painful.  Lawrence Olivier, William Devane and Marthe Keller costar.

On a vacation, a married couple and their male friend go on a scuba dive, when they resurface they find everyone dead which leads to some interesting dynamics and expected jealousies and paranoia.  Roger Corman directs this film. I love the idea of this film but just would’ve liked the relationship between the three characters a bit more fleshed out to really put you in the mindset of their situation.  This would be a great film to remake with some money behind it.

The grand finale (?) of the long running Tom Cruise led action franchise sees the continuation of Dead Reckoning and Ethan Hunt’s self imposed mission that he chose to accept to literally save the world from an AI device that is planning on taking control of the world’s nuclear weapons and destroying mankind.  To say this is the most ambitious mission and slightly far fetched, the stakes couldn’t be higher for this.  Filled with incredible stunt sequences and action, most led by its star, Tom Cruise, the action is pretty jaw dropping. Which is pretty amazing after twenty plus years of this franchise, to be able to continually top it each time.  Franchise regulars Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg return as does the incredible Hayley Atwell.  While this isn’t my favourite of the series it is highly entertaining, slightly melodramatic and very impressive.

This quirky and awkward comedy isn’t for everyone, fans of Tim Robinson’s brand of comedy will love it.  Robinson plays a  loner who’s wife, played by Kate Mara, sends him off to the new neighbour to befriend him.  Paul Rudd, a hotshot weatherman is everything Robinson wants to be. After an awkward moment the new friendship is in jeopardy sending him into a spiral.
There are so many truly uncomfortably awkward moments that are hilarious. I happen to love weird comedies like this that nearly go over the top, but are restrained just enough.  This is a perfect example of that kind of movie.

Documentary looking at the Harvey Weinstein accusations which kick sparked the me too movement, putting the entertainment industry under the microscope, exposing a long whispered about systematic sexual harassment/misuse of power that had everyone turning a blind eye on, until someone finally spoke out. This was a good documentary, with some very good interesting interviews with some accs and industry insiders.  While there was nothing really new in this that I hadn’t already read about, it’s still a pretty fascinating documentary.  While most focus is on the Weinstein case, the Louis CK situation is looked at too as well a a brief touch on the Aziz Ansari story.  Worth a look.

The second film in Rob Zombie’s Firefly family trilogy is easily my favourite of the three.  House of 1000 Corpses, introduced us to Otis, Baby and Captain Spaulding in a rollercoaster ride of insanity, while this film is more of a brutally violent road trip with the three fugitives trying to evade the law closing in on them, leaving a trail of bodies along the way.  While the main three played by Bill Moseley, Sherri Moon Zombie and Sid Haig respectively, are despicable, reprehensible characters, you still can’t help but root for them.  The law after them played by William Forsythe and Dave Sheridan are evil in their own justifiable way, which makes it easier to cheer on Zombie’s anti heroes. Filled with gore, violence and depravity, this is as gritty a mainstream movie as it gets. With a beautifully shot final scene.

Written and directed by Jason Buxton, this film sees a family led by Ben Foster and Cobie Smulders move into their dream home that just happens to be at the crux of a sharp turn on the road, which leads to a horrific accident on their first night there.  Foster, is mesmerizing to watch as the quiet Josh, who begins to become obsessed with the accident and steps he could have done to help possibly save a life. The strange obsession begins to alienate him from friends/family and work and Foster’s brilliant performance is well worth checking this film out. The film itself is a really interesting concept which plays in part like a dark comedy, family drama and thriller. The acting is good and the story is decent, but this didn’t really do too much for me.   Easy to lose interest as nothing really new or astonishing happens here.  The child actors do a good job of looking morose.

I’m a fan of anthologies even though they’re not always equally great, but you’re not investing too much time on each as they’re usually about 25 minutes each.  The middle one was likely my least favourite as it was a bit more predictable.  The third is predictable but in a way that you’re excited for.  The first was probably my personal favourite as it does a great job of swerving the audience.  Fun trifecta of stories all brought to life by the amazing Karen Black.

This comedy starring Tim Heidecker as a version of himself as a mock documentary sees him, a former music promoter who had beaten a murder charge and is now running for district attorney.
From what I’ve read this film is basically an offshoot of a popular podcast that I’ve never listened to.  So to me, other than the obvious funny situations that he’s put in, I didn’t really get the full picture of how potentially funny this might be if I were a fan of the podcast.  But since I’m not, this was just okay to me.

When this came out in 2009, this unknowingly birthed a new genre of horror film - Nazi zombies.  While since then we’ve seen a fair share of undead Germans on the big screen but this will always be the granddaddy of them all and one of the best ones.  The scenario is like most other horror films, a group of friends gather in a remote cabin for some snowy frolicking during Easter break, and somehow awake a platoon of long dead Nazis. Whose bloodlust still flows strong. The Nazi zombies look great and extremely menacing and the gore effects and bloodshed are top notch which makes this a completely fun watch.  Tommy Wirkola directs.

Y’know as far fetched as this premise is, the filmmakers treat this disaster flick quite seriously which works so well and has me believing volcanic activity could creep to the surface of downtown Los Angeles after a mild earthquake.  Tommy Lee Jones leads the charge to save L.A. along with a spirited Anne Heche and Don Cheadle. I’ll it I’m a bit of a sucker for disaster films, as long as they’re done well.  Weirdly this fits the bill.  These are definitely guilty pleasures of mine.

Nothing worse than a killer shark movie that pretty much takes place on the shore.  The somewhat clever title implies that this has the possibility of being  fun adventure, no such luck.  The shark itself might’ve been more menacing looking had it been hand drawn by a child.  Luckily the shark had the ability to fly as to kill everyone without any acting acumen.   This is one of those movies that you come out of it with a sore neck from shaking your head in disgust and disbelief.  There was a cute French girl victim, so there was three enjoyable minutes.   Just an awful movie.

Roman Polanski’s masterful film noir sees Jack Nicholson as a private investigator who investigates infidelity for the most part.  Nicholson is at his career best as the cool as ice gumshoe J.J. Gittes.
His delivery of every line keeps you glued to the screen and brings a subtle importance to every word or movement made.  Cinematography and set design is excellent as we’re transported to the mid 1930’s.  The story is riveting with enough twists and turns to keep the viewer guessing.  But it’s the direction from Polanski and the chemistry between Nicholson and costar Faye Dunaway that make this a cinema classic.

True crime documentary where a young woman’s parents were shot during a home invasion, but signs point to the daughter who may have arranged this horrific crime.
Pretty engaging story as we hear from detectives on the case with some fascinating footage from the interrogation room as police try to break down her story.    Very good documentary.

From director Anthony DiBiase, this film is kind of a re-do of his film The Last Shift.  Didn’t realize that going in. There are some really cool imagery, as this is a pretty dark horror flick, and the tone provides a creepy backdrop for the proceedings.  A young female rookie cop is left alone to man a soon to be closing precinct and tormented by crank calls and the sins of her father. A lot of psychological and satanic overtones highlight this movie.  Personally I thought Last Shift was fine and didn’t need the overhaul but what do I know.

This one isn’t exactly a good movie either, but they’re genuinely having fun with this alien/monster flick as a gaggle of corn fed yokels and a vengeful priest (played by Roddy Piper) gather at a farmhouse to seek a reward for killing an alien that has taken away the patriarch of the family.  Jeremy London is the top billed star, but Piper chews up whatever scene he’s in.  A lot of what happens plays for laughs, some hot and some miss, but overall it’s a fun waste of time.

Steven Seagal is sent to Afghanistan to recover a stolen stealth bomber.  I used to enjoy Seagal movies and some are guilty pleasures.  This one isn’t so great. I’m supposed to believe Seagal is an expert pilot and stealthy at that. One scene in particular where he and two colleagues are about to try to retrieve the plane, he hides nonchalantly sort of behind a tree.  I’m guessing he doesn’t have the capability of crouching anymore.
Basically this one is being phoned in….too bad it’s the wrong number.

The long awaited sequel arrives in theatres and sees Ben Affleck’s ant called to help solve a murder of a former FinCen chief.  Armed with his brilliant powers of deduction and with help of his estranged brother, Jon Bernthal, he works his magic to try and solve the puzzle of the murder.
I hadn’t rewatched the first one since seeing it in theatres but I that I enjoyed it more than I expected.  This one I may have enjoyed just a tad more. The insertion of much more Bernthal in this one elevates this and injects it with some humour and an awkward camaraderie.  Bernthal and Affleck play off of each other well and makes an already good film better because of it.  Another unexpected solid flick from director Gavin O’Connor.  Recommend this one.

The follow up to fan favourite The Wrath of Khan, this sees Leonard Nimoy take the reins as director as the search for his character begins.  Any Star Trek movie compared to Wrath of Khan is going to be met with some slight disappointment but there are certainly some highlights. Christopher Lloyd as a Klingon was pretty great, even though his signature voice kind of takes you out of it a bit.  The rest of the original crew is back with William Shatner commanding the USS Enterprise, though this time having to steal it to try and find Spock.  Decent but not the best entry in the series.

Jared Leto is unrecognizable as Mark David Chapman in this film that takes a stab at trying to figure out the psyche of Chapman in the couple days leading up to him murdering John Lennon.  This is certainly an interesting take, and Leto is mesmerizing in the role, gaining nearly seventy pounds to portray Chapman. While I’m not sure how much of this is based on actual events other than the murder, it’s a fascinating look at a man having a mental breakdown to the point of committing the infamous heinous crime.
Lindsay Lohan plays Jude, who by all s, was based on a real person that met Chapman in the days leading up to the murder.

I love Zach Galifianakis’ brand of humour, so any movie he’s starring in automatically gets bumped up a half star extra.  This is a pretty standard action/comedy that is mostly predictable, but what makes this one more tolerable and likeable is the stellar cast.  Not only is Galifianakis good, but he’s surrounded by Jon Hamm, Gal Gadot and Isla Fisher, who on their own are impressive, but as an ensemble it really lifts this comedy up higher than it would be without them.
There are some quite funny sight gags and some funny moments, but overall it’s pretty straightforward.  The cast makes this much better than it should be.

Low to no budget horror movies with terrible acting I don’t mind if they’re doing something interesting or unique.  This is not the case here, the filmmakers apparently said let’s make a movie everyone has already seen a million times, but we’ll make it so much worse.  They gathered their healthiest friends and made this atrocity.  On a positive note, the gore effects were decent enough.  Would be a much more positive review if they’d have shown an iota of a different idea.  I’ve sadly seen worse, but I still wouldn’t recommend this.

This Western/horror hybrid is actually quite good.  A man rounds up a posse to hunt down Indians who he believes are responsible for the disappearance of his fiancee.  This has some great western elements to it and surprisingly a very creepy folklore that could be the end of all of them.  Clancy Brown plays a ing role, and his presence alone gives this movie much more credibility than if he weren’t in it.  Some great visuals and an antagonist that is kept mostly in the shadows which works brilliantly.

Mike Judge written and directed comedies I really enjoy.  They are usually blue collar relatable films that combine irony with everyday funny situations without going too far over the top.
Jason Bateman stars as the owner of an extract factory, who’s going through some marital issues, thinking of selling the company, dealing with an accident at work, an annoying neighbor and a new manipulative employee who’s hot.  Bateman is perfect at comedic roles like these as his demeanour and delivery is always on point.  Great eclectic cast really elevates this film as well with JK Simmons, Mila Kunis, Kristen Wiig, David Koechner, Ben Affleck and Gene Simmons.

I love the Masters of Horror series, they’re all very good but this one wasn’t one of my favourites.  Directed by William Malone, this one sees a teenage girl kidnapped and awakens in a large house by a grieving couple who’ve lost their son.  There are some pretty creepy moments in this and while the story was initially compelling, it didn’t hold me as much as I’d have hoped.  Kind of a ghost/haunting story that’s come from grief which was an interesting idea.  Just felt it was missing something.  Lori Petty stars.

Comedy horrors don’t get any better than this.  Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine are excellent as the title pair.  Two good natured country boys who are excited to have a dream vacation home, a cabin in the woods.  A group of easily frightened and paranoid young adults overreact to their presence triggering a series of hilarious accidents.   The death scenes and circumstances are incredibly funny.  This is a really fun flick that also has heart to it.  The chemistry from the leads seems genuine. Going into this I tried to stay away from any trailers, but had caught one which, as trailers do, give away too much.  Set in the South in the 1930’s, this is a story of twin brothers who return to their hometown to open up a juke t after making a name for themselves in Chicago.  Their first night open could be their last when unexpected visitors try to the party.
This is a  multi genre film that is a beautifully shot slow burn film.  The casting is beyond perfect and the climactic third act is incredibly tense and thrilling.  The music in this film feels like an important character itself and fits perfectly.  Michael B Jordan, Miles Caton, Hailee Steinfeld and a scene stealing Delroy Lindo star.  See it on IMAX screens if you can.

Really good cop flick made in the 80’s , so there’s plenty of shootouts but what really is done well is the story.  Brian Dennehy, Jeff Fahey, Joe Pantoliano and Bill Paxton star.
