Marathon Man

1976

Dustin Hoffman and Roy Scheider play very different brothers, one a college student, the other has a more mysterious job.  I can’t if I’ve ever watched this before, of course there’s one unforgettable and famous scene that everyone is familiar with, but I’m pretty sure this was my first watch of this that I can .  John Schlesinger directed this film which has a lot of intrigue, government agents, Nazi war criminals, diamond smuggling and more.  Hoffman is great as the increasingly paranoid student as he tries to evade/escape the agents whose interrogation methods are quite painful.  Lawrence Olivier, William Devane and Marthe Keller costar.

On a vacation, a married couple and their male friend go on a scuba dive, when they resurface they find everyone dead which leads to some interesting dynamics and expected jealousies and paranoia.  Roger Corman directs this film. I love the idea of this film but just would’ve liked the relationship between the three characters a bit more fleshed out to really put you in the mindset of their situation.  This would be a great film to remake with some money behind it.

I really liked this different take on the usual Dracula story.  This recounts the fate of the ship The Demeter and its crew.  Setting sail from Romania headed to England, the crew start to suspect something evil is on board when the livestock on board is mutilated and crew start being killed.
This is a pretty captivating story patiently told with plenty of suspenseful scenes.  Love the story and the cast and Dracula is suitably creepy.

I was excited to see this movie but have been let down by high expectations before. This not only met the high expectations but exceeded them.  David Gordon Green’s love letter to John Carpenter is both familiar in a good way and updated, erasing the past missteps of many of the franchises sequels.
Jamie Lee Curtis reprises her role as Laurie Strode forty years since the events of the original Halloween and is still obsessively preparing for her inevitable next…
