I can't believe we are here, after years of waiting this film has arrived and it has achieved things that I haven't seen in 20 years. I got invited to attend the Brisbane Premiere for this film and it was an experience I will never forget.
I strongly believe that in the blockbuster space we haven't had a movie like The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King since that film released, nothing with a grand vision that doesn't get ahead of itself, is still really accessible but there is so much to uncover after many rewatches. Dune Part 2 is the first film since that which made me feel like I was watching something that is just rarely matched and is truly a once in a generation type movie.
There is not a single frame out of place, a single word of dialogue which was questionable, not one weak link. I think this film is masterful in its execution and absolutely delivers the pay off we have been longing for since Part One laid this incredible framework. I already gave Part One a 5 star review and Part 2 is better in every single aspect which is just nuts to me.
This film deals with fighting the inevitable, we know that both these films consistently deal with the future and questioning whether they are a real premonition or just a dream. Part 2 answers some of those questions we have been having in the most satisfying way that you can think of. Every character here evolves so much over the course of this film that Part One truly feels so long ago and its events are so far behind these characters now.
Speaking of the characters they are all just incredible, we see a lot more of the Fremen here and I loved it. Stilgar played by Javier Bardem was one of the stand outs, he is surprisingly quite funny in this but there is a lot of intrigue with that character that is worthy of exploring. Chani played by Zendaya is another character we all really wanted to see more from and she delivers so much. Chani is the heartbeat of this film and she is incredibly well utilised.
The Harkonnen's are also further explored here with new characters ing the fray. A lot of intrigue has surrounded Austin Butlers Feyd- Rautha and he is amazing in this film, he commits to this role 100% and makes for a very menacing character. I especially enjoyed the scenes he has opposite Timothee Chalamet's Paul Atreides.
Lets talk about the protagonist now because he is just wonderful in this movie. I am a massive fan of Timothee Chalamet's work so I am not kidding around when I say that this could be his greatest performance to date. Paul Atreides in this film goes to some really interesting places and evolves a lot as a character and Chalamet is able to provide a stunningly ranged performance that will have you on the edge of your seat. I think that he deserves an Oscar Nomination for this role which is not something you see from movies like this but it is truly deserving. Rebecca Ferguson's Lady Jessica also has a lot to do here and she is so phenomenal, her character evolves a lot in this film and it is truly captivating.
The film making is also on another level, Denis Villeneuve's direction is unmatched, this is a true epic in every sense of the word and has provided fans of this series with the definitive adaptation. The cinematography is absolutely astounding with many wallpaper esque shots. The sound is so immersive and is much more than just a loud movie. When the Shai Hulud are present in this film the sound illustrates their power in the desert of Arrakis. Hans Zimmer's score is just as fantastic and iconic here as it was in Part One and will be ed forever, it is critical within this narrative and will give you chills at moments.
Overall, Dune Part Two is straight up one of the greatest movies of all time and arguably the greatest sci fi movie ever made. The film making is unmatched in this space, the performances are committed and some I think are Oscar worthy with the narrative being so compelling and epic. I could not recommend this movie more to you, this is real movie magic.
