Not a spoiler, but there's a scene where someone says "I intend to enjoy the time I have left. And I suggest you do the same. Life is precious. Enjoy every single second. You never know when... Good luck." basically to the audience. It's sweet and a nice tribute to the franchise (I haven't seen any of the previous movies), but it felt out of place.

I agree with what he was saying, but on a movie like this? Actions speak louder than words and this movie makes me more aware of how I'd die soon rather than focus on, what he said, life. Maybe it was supposed to be ironic? It felt sincere to me.

This movie is certainly not my thing, not to be a wuss who gets squeamish about gory death left and right, but I still had some fun with it.

Textbook definition of how fast-paced editing ≠ good movie. I literally had a fever dream because of this thing.

That teddy bear scene at the end is HEARTBREAKING!

It's amazing that the one-take episodes, usually targeted for men, transforms into exploration of modern masculinity that's really refreshing. Most men aren't doing anything wrong, not inherently. It's what we promote of our masculinity that we need to do more to combat the toxicity. We can't prevent the worst by just doing nothing.

Something I don't like about this show is most prominent in the first episode. The fact that we have to get through all the procedures of getting arrested is understandable, but it takes so long! One point they have to scan fingerprints and they go through every finger. Because it's all in one take, we have to get through everything, which isn't ideal for me. Also because it's all one take, there are no cutaways. Like, when a character looks at something (which in a normal show would be a reaction shot), it usually takes a while for the camera to move and look at what they're looking at, if that makes sense.

Either way, this is a special show that deserves all the praise not only for its impressive filmmaking, but also for its message.

Iya bisa kiritik animasi rambutnya ngeganggu, bisa kritik plot twist antagonisnya tiba-tiba entah darimana, bisa aja ngerkritik bahwa rasanya ada tiga kali endingnya ternyata lanjut filmnya, tapi sebenernya lebih kesel sama industri ini sih.

Coba mikirin media buat anak2 yang diproduksi Indo yang bagus, gitu. Apa? Bobo? Juki? Paddle Pop? Gaada sebenernya yang kuat. Adanya sekarang brainrot Tung Tung Sahur malahan.

Emang bener kok yang orang2 bilang. Animasinya ngetop, karakternya lucu, dialognya cukup natural, dan pesannya kena (scoring juga bagus banget ga espek agak nge-carry sih musiknya menurut gw). Tapi emang kalo goalnya (warning agak asumsi) itu untuk generasi anak Indo bisa punya media dibuat oleh negri, jadi sedih gw cuma punya ini kita.

Sebenernya emang bagus banget ini filmnya... buat produksi Indo.

I can't believe I cried 2 times. The message on mental health here is really sweet, which I didn't expect at all from Marvel. I'm just a sucker for a good message for young people. Florence Pugh OH MY GOD! I don't mean to be such a fucking simp, but she's incredible! With the stronger writing, Yelena's character felt so rich in the movie. I thought she was super refreshing as a protagonist. Lewis Pullman as Bob is really at his A-game and David Harbour is laugh out loud hilarious.

I haven't made up my mind if I liked this as an MCU installment. On one hand, I noticed that I like stories that end right before the credits roll. It's just not how it works in Marvel movies. I don't like that there will be a grander movie that will likely disregard and over-shadow (haha get it) these personal characters. On the other hand, it's fun! The audience's reward of knowing these characters is what makes people come back.

The movie itself is unexpectedly heartfelt. The commercials weren't lying. This does have an A24 arthouse vibe to it.

You guys ever watch a movie that completely changes your view of the medium itself? This film did to documentary what Hadestown did to theatre for me. "Documentary is just not my thing" I said, stupidly.

Flipside is a doc by Chris Wilcha, a documentary filmmaker who, like all artists, have dozens of unfinished projects that never came to be. It's a reflexive doc about revisiting these past projects and creating a new one out of it. The idea at first glance seems unprofessional, but it works so well because he surrounds that idea with a new mission: reviving the old record store he used to work at.

The doc has a light, funny vibe to it. There are also some pretty sad revelations that I fell in love with. Wilcha talks about the past, how we keep things as 'memorabilia', exposing that we're all collectors one way or another. When looking through his casette collection, he explains that in the past, he felt as if the world will forget one day, but he would have enough material to .

There are also topics about letting go and growing older, which I was fascinated by. I've always felt distanced by other documentaries because I couldn't seem to connect with them in a deeply personal level. I hope Flipside isn't a exception and I can find other docs that I can care as deeply about.

Maybe the real Godfather were the men we killed along the way.

Yeah, it's an interesting commentary on familial careers and revenge, but I can't see it other than "brooo you gotta watch the godfather it's absolutely goated and if you don't like it i don't like you"

The main character, Hirayama, is so endearing. Why not make a toilet janitor your protagonist? Why not make your protagonist someone who would be a blurry figure in the background of a star-studded Hollywood film? It's so sweet.

Really solid.

The sound design is peak. Not as in peaking, but like good. Coupled with Ludwig Göransson's score, the mix of old timey sounds and electric soul is pitch perfect. Especially with that oner, my GOD.

I really dug the mythology of it. The main antagonists aren't revealed in the marketing which is pretty cool. I recommend going into this blind.

Biggest problem I had is a nitpick that I truly believe was ruined by film school. The structure was off-putting. It didn't feel right. There's a big chunk of the movie where the protagonists are just talking about the danger with no action. A lot of tell and no show.

Still worth seeing in theaters just for the energy, and Hailee Steinfeld, and two Michael B. Jordans.

It's called 'Matt and Mara' but it's more like Mara's story with Matt Johnson jumpscares everytime he shows up. It's about a married college prof who gets a visit from her ex. The most 'she's cheating' part of the whole thing is when they were taking a picture for Mara's port, the photographer shows Matt first before Mara. It's the little micro expressions that make a relationship.

A beautifully shot slow-burn with really funny moments edited by my editing professor. Did you guys know Ajla edited this? Pretty cool! We would like to see her folders and bins.

Zac Efron DISAPPEARED in this role??? Where did Troy Bolton and his Oscar nomination go???

Double feature with Blackmail at Paradise Cinema!

The first half of this was fantastic, but it dragged so muchhhh my god. Is it weird to say that this was too political? It is just WWII propaganda at its core, but I prefer the smaller Hitchcock stories. They're better at showing off his specialty in tension. This still has its moments with the windmill, clock tower, and hotel scenes being the most intriguing ones.

I watched this after watching the Minecraft movie, believe it or not. I unintentionally had the most juxtaposed audiences of my life. The (almost) all younger audience and the older audience. Seriously old btw, the laughs sound like old white money. The contrast is insane. The Minecraft audience had multiple people with their phones out recording Jack Black yelling "Chicken jockey", while once there was a phone turned on in the double feature, at least 3 people yelled out, "Turn your phone off please!" The cinematic experience has evolved so much, but both appropriate for the situation. It's beautiful. I love cinema.

Hitchcock? More like.... idk

He knows exactly what he's doing. 89 minutes flew by like a pigeon, or, to be more pretentious, a hawk as well. I can tell how much Knives Out was influenced by this with the female protagonist dealing with murder guilt. For a movie released in 1929, there are match cuts and pedestalling camera movement and cross-cutting. Blew my mind.

I totally forgot Andrew showed a scene from this movie in Frame by Frame last semester.

Absolute cinema???
Perfectly goofy for what it is. Almost every scene is backlit green screen of Jack Black naming things and telling the audience about Minecraft items. Pretty sure kids are smarter than what the filmmakers think they are.

I am interested in the conversation of what kids are watching now. I would've definitely ate this shit up when I was younger. The difference is that we're older, and older people who has had the internet for so long now has the power to shit on kids movies. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, but I still think there is too much audience dependency on baiting older people to feel nostalgic. That's what's weird. 'Kids content' has reduced to 'kids and adults who the IP content'.

Anyway, sorry for taking the Minecraft movie too seriously. Just thinking about my future career here.

The editing is gorgeous. The cut from the dead body to the steak searing on the pan is sick. Sick as in disgusting. I really liked the message of the public not wanting justice, they just want satisfaction. I don't love the ending. I thought it left too much for interpretation, but since it is based on a true case, it makes total sense. It just isn't as satisfying of a pay-off as I hoped for. Still, a thoroughly entertaining Bong hit.

The fact that the plot of the movie could've all been avoided if JFK didn't promise his citizens that they would land on the moon that year blows my mind, pun intended

A fucking fantastic start to another year of movies. I needed to rewatch this to confirm my love for this. It's such a me kinda movie. It's like an amalgamation of everything I love about Bong Joon-Ho's movies. I've talked about the politics before, but this is the most politically unambiguous parody ever. My political alignment with this movie has a big corelation to how much I love this.

I understand why people don't love this as much as Bong's previous installment. Yeah, there's too much exposition; Yeah, there's some redundant storytelling; but I believe that Bong knows what he's doing. It's a miracle this movie even released after all the chaotic reschedulings. Sorry for my brainrot-lish, but I might be glazing this too much. Me and this movie just kinda... match freak. I hope the negative reception doesn't discourage producers to fund more original projects.

Finally got to watch the classic! Loved the different endings! Very jumpy and all over the place!

Genuinely pretty interesting. Mostly just editors talking about how important they are in filmmaking, which they do deserve a lot more credit for. Biggest takeaway for me was that it's important to have someone that wasn't in pre-production nor on set to have a more objective view of the film the director was trying to make. It's just confusing that we still have to edit our own short films, having very biased opinions of the whole process.

Holy shiy holy shit holy shit. WHAT?? Did you guys see that?? Did we all see the same movie?? Am I going crazy???

Robert Pattinson and Bong Joon-Ho team-up is a POWERHOUSE!!! They both lead this movie with such trust and ion. I can't wait for their respective performance and direction to be utterly forgotten on next year's Oscars!

I was surprised at how political this movie went. It's perfectly emblematic to the state of our society right now. I'm gonna blame my progressive political biases on this, but I'm soooo satisfied with this parody of greed and class.

Anything can be political because everything is. From privilege to pies to poppy peppered principles. Then again, Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collete are basically doing a Trump/Melania impression in this movie.

Each cast member is so consistently funny and engaging. Whenever they reprint Mickey and he jams like an actual printing paper cracks me up every time!! That dinner scene is chef's kiss too holy moly.

Here's another bias thrown at you: recency bias. This is genuinely one of my favorite things I've watched in recent years and it's something that I can talk about for a long time. It's emotional, it's beautiful, it's sexy, it's hilarious, and everything in between. Artists at the top of their game. I need to rewatch this immediately.

Man, I really wanted to love this. It's still very very good and it locks tf in on the final act. Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as Nana was so amazing, I thought she was Viola Davis the entire time! Maybe I should start consuming more black-led media and history...

This movie sets its own rules. It's almost entirely POV shots from two of the main characters, but it's not gimmicky. It's like a language to be learned, which the filmmakers teach quite smoothly. It's a daring, experimental technique that could've had the same emotional effect, if not more, if it were to be shot traditionally in my opinion.

It reminded me of a conversation I had with my film student friends on how our eyes work. Getting a little nerdy here, but we have a pretty small depth of field, which means we can focus on something and blur everything that isn't important. We can see the details of the moon, but also the details on our fingerprints. The camera work here does that greatly, but it's not as shaky as I thought it should be, which took me out of the story from how robotic it felt a few times.

Nickel Boys is bleak and disheartening. It reminds us of how fucked up the system was back then, and how far we've come, but there's still change to be made.

It's really hard for me to talk about this film. I watched the trailer when it came out and wasn't really interested because of the artstyle. It felt a bit too video-gamey to me, which made sense since it was all made in Blender. I still haven't fallen in love with the animation in this. There's something about 3D animated cell-shading that my eyes haven't conformed to.

The group you start with won't be the one you end up with. Without human characters or language, Flow somehow makes an engaging and relatable story only with animals. The story of animals trying to survive natural disasters should work on me, but it felt a little bit pointless in the beginning. I thought it would be more of a warm hug kind of movie coming in, but it's way more anxiety inducing than I thought.

I could yap all day about very little things that I didn't enjoy from the film, but I am super proud about what they've done with it. A true-indie animated film from Latvia that won an Oscar over the other strong nominees is historical and should be talked about more.

For a movie so focused on the topic of cutting corners, the making of it sure does cut a lot of corners. Sure, using AI for more accurate accents because Hebrew is a very specific dialect, but you know what they could've done? Dialect coach... Now the use of AI for architecture is plainly embarrassing, but it's okay guys the director was like "No we didn't."

First half was incredible. One of the best opening titles I've ever seen, but holy crap my engagement went down after that intermission.

Weird movie to watch right after 'No Other Land'. Great movie to watch before the Oscars. Best movie to watch between the 2 parts of The Brutalist.

Shadow is so sick. Name a more awesome character than Shadow the fucking Hedgehog. All of the good scenes are at the 2nd part tbh, so if you go through all the dragged out crap in thr beginning, it's worth it. A really fun sequel, can't wait for the next!

I'm gonna be the first guy to it this, but I did not speak up about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict when I first heard the news, and I had no reason not to speak up! Now that I'm more educated on the subject, I could've done better. I recognize my privilege to be educated, to breathe clean air, to drink fresh water, to have 3 meals a day, and to not have fear that my home could be demolished and taken away from my land every single day.

The ugliest and dirtiest shots in this are also the ones that stuck to me the most because it shows the inability for quality control when on the field. Those handheld shots of the filmmakers running away from the soldiers only showing the ground with sounds of yelling and the shot of the black balloons flying away from the suffering are devastating. For a documentary, It's insane what they do with the camera here.

There's a whole system that is currently against the people living there. It's awful knowing that what was shown in this documentary isn't even the whole picture of what's happening in Palestine right now.

We were learning about documentaries in class, and my prof taught us that the easiest-to-spot difference between documentary and narrative filmmaking is when you're in a spot to choose between truth and drama, which do you prioritize? Burnham certainly does prioritize drama, pulling the emotional strings, but there's still ambiguous truth to his work. That goes with any stand-up show. In his special 'Make Happy', Burnham yells out to the crowd, "You want an honest comedian? Go see the rest of them!"

I owe it to him. He released this at the right time, when I was unsure of which ion of mine I should focus my attention on. This thing made me realize that I can start, now; That I didn't need to wait until I'm older to experiment or go big. Hell, my second high-school film project is straight up a shorter rehash of Inside.

'Bo Burnham: Inside' is the most dynamic piece of art I've seen in of experience and medium. You can put this in the background, be on your phone, be invested, or even transcend back into the pandemic times. You can call it a stand-up show, a movie, a documentary, a musical. Whatever I feel like calling it whenever I rewatch this... thing, it always will mean a lot to me. Maybe that's why they call it 'Specials'.

I ed Facebook to cast for Bolder. It's an odd app that I don't like to think about. But that's sacrifice, which is also the big theme in this. Can stepping over other people propel your career to the most it can be. Jesse Eisenberg is sooo good in this, along with Garfield's powerful performance. Justin Timberlake and Armie Hammer are weirdly good at being a pricks. I don’t love the pacing. It's doesn't take its time that much. It's a thoroughly entertaining non-cautionary tale, but Blackberry (2023) did it better lol.

I believed that who I am is what I express and what other people see from it, but that entails that I'm not the parts that people don't see. I am not one thing, because in this life, I'll experience everything. But it's hard. It's hard to live in a world where we prioritize norm over expression, romance over friendship, career over ion...., toilet paper over bidets, which is still fucking insane to me.

1. Challengers

   Nothing can beat this much exhilaration on screen. It excels in drama writing with every line carefully settled to add to the distruction. Impeccable camera movement, character depth, and soundtrack. Everything is cut clean. My favorite movie of this year and now one of my favorites of all time.

2. Monkey Man

   Thoroughly gruesome with high stakes action, Dev Patel created a lived-in world that is both spiritually grounding and ascending the audience. Masterfully handles civil rights, destroying the hierarchy, and forgiving the past.

   An epic continuation that gave me chills on every other scene. The best ensemble performances at the top of their games.

   A young woman faces an exciting yet brutal version of reality. Energetic on the surface, devastating underneath.

   A beautifully animated story of motherhood and how we bring peace to those in need, even if you feel like you don't always belong.

   An all-over-the-place mess of stress and ion of the craft. Reminds me everything about why I love creating.

  Fell asleep watching with my siblings, I was just really tired I think. I fell asleep on that scene where Vanessa threw the bottle of pills into the river. I still don't know why she did that. That's littering!
