Anime Marches On 2025

A bitter, blood-soaked pursuit through the bowels of hell on earth. My jam.

This two part OVA shows that horror anime was best during this era. The video market allowed them to get away with much more than tv, it didn’t have to adhere to a season long story, and the market was thirsty for constant new content: meaning all sorts of strange and disturbing shit could get made. It was the golden age of horror anime.

Yoma wastes no time. We open on a desolate battlefield full of bloody corpses, a clan leader is murdered by a demon, and the wasteland of bodies becomes the feeding grounds for a new batch of Yoma (demons) - all ready to continue the cycle of misery.

This world is cruel and coldhearted, the land is at constant war with various clans all vowing for control while the unlucky innocents must fend with the creatures hiding in the shadows. Amidst this chaos is a lone ninja tasked with tracking down and killing his best friend. Things quickly go south though, as he discovers his pal is actually a Yoma himself.

What follows is a somber, tragic tale of revenge full of death and monsters.

Part one is classic folk tale as our hero finds himself in a village full of happy-go-lucky people. That’s obviously strange given the state of the world, and he slowly uncovers the monstrous truth and the consequences that come with that truth. A very bitter and violent start, with some excellent looking giant spiders and chunky gore. Definitely the highlight for me.

Part two ditches a lot of the previous episodes quiet horror, and leans more into blood-spewing action. Still bleak, still horror, but much more explosive. Our hero gains a love-interest that’s the closest to “cheerful” this anime gets. But don’t worry, she still kills people in graphically violent ways. There’s a man-eating horse, a massive serpent, a talking tree, even a demon butterfly! It all leads to the final confrontation with his friend, who morphs with the horse to become a werewolf/centaur hybrid. Pretty dope stuff honestly.

Then the story is over. We don’t need any more. Two episodes was all it needed. It’s why OVAs are the unrivaled format for horror anime. It just was.

Anyways, this has always been a favorite of mine. I must’ve watched it a ton as a teenager at my dad’s. His vhs anime collection has defined me to this day. Give it a watch, it rules.

A Walk Amongst Monsters #122

Anime Marches On 2025

If your online opponent resorts to sending an actual nuke to your location, you’re doing something right.

Man, there’s nothing even close to this in Pokemon. Pikachu will never do something this cool. Ever. Sorry Pokebros, Digimon is still supreme.

Taking place after the original series, this incredible short cuts the number of digidestined down to three (not counting T.K. and his loser Digimon Patamon) as they’re forced to face a Digimon that’s quickly destroying the internet and all things electronic. It’s not confined to the Digital World, instead it’s roaming freely on our world-wide web circa 1999. It’s an exciting premise, and one they use to its full degree.

Diaboromon is a vicious foe. His mayhem causes worldwide outages and problems, and that’s before he starts intentionally wreaking havoc! I love that he breaks into the NTT (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone) and starts spam calling every phone number, crippling the entire country and severing our heroes internet service. He’s a smart cookie, even though he doesn’t speak in the original Japanese version.

Also love his various designs. Going from some sort of squid demon, to an armored bug tank, to his purple and green final form, he’s always got tendril-like appendages regardless of what form he’s in and they give him a unique sense of movement.

Of course, WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon are awesome as always, I do love Digimon’s mindset of evolutions involving less logic on how these creatures would look in a more evolved state, and more on how cool it would be if a chubby wolf were now a robot that fired ice missiles. It makes for cooler action.

And the action is certainly awesome here! It’s really not the main focus, but what we get is swift and powerful. My favorite moment is when WarGreymon’s armored gloves shatter and he just starts punching Diaboromon. Not only is it good action, it shows how intense the fight is. There’s lasting damage that shows on our heroes throughout, which makes what we’re watching feel more impactful.

The birth on Omnimon is beautiful, even if I still feel like the Americanized version hypes it up considerably more. But regardless, he’s devastating and makes quick work of his foes. I like how smoke comes from his weapons when he unsheathes them, it’s a nice visual touch.

I’ve never picked up on it, but the reason I enjoy the visual inside the internet so much is because they made the choice to differentiate it from the “real world” animation and draw everyone with red outlines. Those red outlines truly make all the difference and give those scenes something more to make them stand out. A genius choice in my opinion.

This short is everything great about Digimon concentrated into an exciting 40 minutes. It was always my favorite segment from the American film, and it’s just a good in the original uncut format.

Mamoru Hosoda knew this was the peak of his career, which is why he straight up remade the damn thing as Summer Wars!

Anime Marches On 2025

I’m pretty sure they sampled Rodan’s roar at one point. Wouldn’t surprise me.

Talk about bonkers fantasy. I mean, nothing in the story itself is that bonkers, but the unrelenting pace and high octane action keeps your attention with ease.

You could easily that this 40 minute ova and stretch it out into a phenomenal trilogy of books, that’s how much shit happens in the short timespan. Within 15 minutes we’ve learned the history of this world, watched the kingdom fall to an army of demons, jumped 15 years, see the hero liberate a mine against one of the villains powerful lackeys, witness a town get obliterated by a enormous dragon, see one of the heroes allies die brutally, watch the hero gets captured, watch the hero get rescued, and meet the twin brother of the fallen ally. I legitimately skipped over some stuff too.

It’s in overdrive from frame one. There is no time to stop and get to know anyone, or learn of the lore, or even revel in victories, we’ve got to wrap this story up in 40 minutes! Its breakneck speed doesn’t leave room for much depth, but it does give you a bunch of kinetic action scenes. And I’m fine with that.

The animation is quite nice, especially when everyone is slicing each other up. The action is bouncy and quick, with plenty of blood and monsters to satiate you.

The evil dragon is one of my favorites in anime. It’s a behemoth that’s one part Biollante, one part sea serpent, and two parts eldritch horror. This beast is a fire-breathing monstrosity and I wish it got more screentime.

The writer was Kenichi Matsuzaki, who is most known for his Mecha works primarily Macross and Gundam, so it’s strange to see a fantasy anime come from him. I think he did a pretty good job honestly.

Oh yeah, the main female lead is voiced by Ryoko from Tenchi Muyo, and she acts just like her too. Not much to add to that, just found it amusing.

It’s absurd fantasy with nonstop action and seriously cool monsters. Of course I’m a fan!

Anime Marches On 2025

It turns out, animation can be too manic for its own good.

This thing breathes life into every inch of every frame in the most haphazardly way possible. Everything’s moving, exploding, screaming, flying, spinning, flailing, bulging, and just generally freaking out. I do not recommend watching this with a headache.

It’s Speed Racer meets Redline meets Looney Tunes meets cocaine. It’s should’ve been better with that description, but it’s too unfocused and delivers nothing. There’s not even an actual ending.

But it’s certainly creative and full of energy. The three racers all have stupidly comical super powers, with my favorite being the chick whos hairdo makes her car fly. It’s insanity from beginning to end, and the animation delivers. This definitely looks good and the artstyle is unique, but I’m left feeling mostly disappointed.

But I do find it funny this is the first thing I’ve seen from director Hiroyuki Imaishi. Not Cyberpunk Edgerunners, not Gurren Lagann, not Dead Leaves, not Promare… this. That’s just like me.

Anime Marches On 2025

Holy shit, this is the coolest thing ever.

It’s a young boys ultimate dream. Lots of massive, multicolored mechs fighting lots of space baddies. That’s it. It’s Power Rangers, it’s Voltron, it’s Mazinger Z, but with elementary school kids.

10 year olds pilot giant robots and combine to destroy all evildoers. I’m pretty sure I’ve imagined this exact scenario as a daydreaming kid. It’s truly glorious.

There’s zero attempt at anything serious or thought-provoking, it’s just the action packed dreams of a little boy brought to life with bright and colorful animation.

The robots are big toys (probably because this franchise was a toy line) colored in blues and reds, with golden swords and rainbow beams. There’s animal robots that combine, the school doubles as a flying fortress, and again… elementary students are the one piloting the robots and saving the day.

This is the sort of shit I’d eat up back in the day, it’s still shit I’d eat up honestly. I’m absolutely going to try and track down all the series and watch them. This is right up my alley.

The Super Robot Genre is the greatest form of Mecha anime. It runs on the “Rule of Cool” and I’ll take it over something like Gundam any day. This is sheer joy to me, I implore you all to give it a watch. This lone ova is the only existing animated media of this particular entry, but there exist 3 full-length series made beforehand I just need to have.

Anime Marches On 2025

As someone who has legitimately zero knowledge of Chrono Trigger, this was a lighthearted and entertaining time.

A bunch of monsters hold a big festival and everything goes wrong. That’s about it. It genuinely doesn’t seem to be that connected to the video game. I assume all the various beasties running amok are foes you slay in the game, but outside of that I’m pretty sure this is just an excuse to go wild and animate pure chaos.

Our “heroes” I can only describe as a big blue tomato with a face, and a very aggressive Furby. They muck up just about everything they touch during the festival, ultimately leading to an energetic mad dash of destruction atop a singing robot. Again, I don’t know how or if this actually has anything to do with the game. But it’s definitely fun.

I adored the cutesy monster designs, everything is so soft and silly, you can clearly see Toriyama’s style in all of them. They have fun with the animation, never caring too much about staying on model and allowing the characters to stretch and compress like cartoons. The whole thing just looks and feels like a product of a bygone era, something that ultimately died off after OVAs started to wane in popularity.

Theres a dude that morphs into a trike motorcycle and the giant singing robot punches him through a wall with an actual cartoon punching glove.
😱🥊🤖

Lots of fun, maybe I should check out the game.

Anime Marches On 2025

I too flirt by causing a wreck then attempting to run over the incapacitated driver. I’ll it it hasn’t worked yet.

This could’ve been something great. The first half is fun, summer vibes amid motor racing and fanservice. But by the second half drops off tremendously once the big race is announced, with the rest of the runtime focused on a boring montage and an even more boring final race.

There’s an attempt at relationship progression in the second half, with the leads male friend itting his love to her, but she completely ignores it (despite her seemingly holding the same feelings) and it’s never brought back up. Huh? It also kinda makes our hero come across as kind of a bitch? They should’ve either actually fully realized the relationship, or dropped it entirely.

The villain is textbook 80’s douche. Simply arrogant and evil for the sake of being arrogant and evil. He’s the sort of dude you want to see fail. Unfortunately, when he finally does lose, it’s with grace and respect. Excuse me? How about absolutely not? I want him broken and crying! This dude commits multiple literal crimes including, as I joked in the opening, attempted murder.

At least the first half is fun.

I will say, I wish this (and all forgotten OVAs) got a remaster so all the colors and atmosphere could show more. Something about 80’s OVAs always have that aesthetic that people online lose their minds over. Me included.

Leave it to that old horndog Tezuka to include some random boobs in this 6 minute short about jumping.

This wasn’t too far off from what my imagination would conjure up whenever I was bored as a child.

It’s just a first person POV of someone increasingly jumping higher and higher. Starting with small leaps in a rural town, before launching themselves into a bustling city of skyscrapers (this part has my favorite bit of animation), to absolutely flying over the sea, then ultimately landing in an active Warzone and falling into Hell. All done with some very nice animation with lots of shade hatching.

I feel like any lover of art would appreciate this. From the art style, to the first-person perspective, to the sense of height and motion, it’s just a fascinating watch. At times you can feel when the person comes down from great heights, almost like falling in a dream.

Seriously cool stuff, definitely check it out if you enjoy unique animated shorts. It on YouTube.

Anime Marches On 2025

Genuinely bonkers in the best way.

This 24 minute OVA holds down the fast forward button and blows through 20 years of wish-granting alien cats, the rise and fall of a criminal empire, the discovery of the alien menace, and the final showdown where the army uses future tech to fight a space ship. And that’s ignoring all the other crazy shit you see in this. Absolutely absurd, like only Osamu Tezuka can do.

Seriously, this moves so quickly that our main character gets held up by gangsters, his friend dies, he takes his friends child as his own, he finds a flying saucer, the child befriends an alien cat, and he loses the child within 4 minutes. There’s no time to take anything in or develop anything. It’s go, go, go until the credits roll. I kinda liked it.

I didn’t even mention that the alien cat melts a dude in a surprisingly graphic manner, or that the climax has a gnarly transformation sequence akin to John Carpenter’s The Thing. The animation every time the cat uses its powers is a visual treat too.

This legitimately rules. It’s way darker than I originally thought it’d be, it wastes absolutely no time, it’s definitely entertaining, this was a real winner for me. I implore you guys to give it a watch on YouTube.

Anime Marches On 2025

I was genuinely not prepared for how comically racist almost every character is. Primarily towards the Japanese, but don’t worry, everyone gets their time to shine here.

This has a pretty cool concept that’s only relevant so we can watch a 20 minute space dogfight. It’s Wall:E, but instead of abandoning earth, we’ve just begun launching our trash into the Sun. Even with those extremes, people continue to dump irresponsibly, causing the Sun to become more and more volatile. Sweet idea right? Ok, well it’s not actually important. Here’s a bunch of overly-aggressive assholes fighting each other in space.

Don’t get me wrong, the battle is well conceptualized, with neat strategies and sci-fi weaponry about (tho we still use Tomahawk missiles in the future it seems), but I kinda wish we got more from the initial idea.

Still, for a mostly unheard of OVA, this was a solid time. Definitely near the bottom of the list for compared to the directors other works though.

Anime Marches On 2025

It’s like stop-motion, but without the motion!

Three separate Lovecraft stories are brought to life in a very bizarre way. It’s essentially just shot after shot of unmoving clay dioramas, nothing more. Every bit of movement you see is just the director holding a prop/character and moving it himself. Weird choice. But weird works for Lovecraft, and the off-putting character designs and set pieces create an unsettling atmosphere filled with of worry. So props.

Unfortunately, none of the stories adapted do justice to the originals. Not to mention the choice of stories is strange too. The Dunwich Horror makes sense, it’s a literary classic. But The Picture in the House? And The Festival? The vast majority of people familiar with Lovecraft won’t recognize those works, and they’re not necessarily the best to adapt.

At least The Picture in the House works as an eerie short story with a chilling ending. Though it’s not that engaging of a story. But The Festival is severely hurt here. There’s no dialogue or narration, which if you know Lovecraft, is a bad thing. We lose so much of the horror and fear by removing Lovecraft’s writing, instead we get a somewhat neat silent short that’s (ittedly) got some creative dioramas. It’s confusing and felt like a disservice to the story.

Dunwich is the standout, with easily the best character models and dioramas. It’s still a far cry from Lovecraft’s short story, but seeing it brought to life with grotesque models was very nice.

Lovecraft is never easy to adapt. His writing style and way he’d describe his monstrosities make it hard to bring to a visual medium. Something always gets lost. But I’m always happy to see people do their best and try to bring his horrors to the naked eye. I believe Lovecraft is one of (if not the) greatest horror writers of all time. Only Stephen King seems to be able to update his terrors for the modern age.

Regardless, this is certainly an oddity that was clearly made with love. I mean, every single diorama the director had to make only gets used for a scant few seconds. That’s dedication. So if you’re interested in this strange little anthology, it’s on YouTube.

Anime Marches On 2025

Just about one step away from being completely incomprehensible, Dark Cat is very much not good

Two brothers who are also cats(?) and are also magical(?) fight penis-shaped tentacle monsters that apparently spawn from bad emotions(?). There’s also a magic tree(?) that’s guarded by a floating cat(?), and a green evil dude that’s also a cat(?).

Everything you’d expect a competent anime to be, this isn’t.

The dub is atrociously hilarious, with one of the characters having one of the worst voices I’ve ever heard. It’s a mixture of no emotion, stoner, and no talent. It’s gold. I won’t say this dub is good, but it did make me nostalgic for the absurdity and hilarity of classic anime dubs. I much prefer those over the unrepentant blandness of modern day Funimation dubs that use the same 10-15 voice actors that can only do one voice. At least the Wild West of the old days produced entertaining dubs.

The body horror and monster designs are the highlight animation wise. They’re pulsating, fleshy tendrils of phallic death. Gross and well animated, unlike everything else which is only decent.

This is dumb, pointless, and confusing. That’ll certainly appeal to some of you, so it’s available for free on YouTube if you’ve got 50 minutes to spare.

Anime Marches On 2025

It’s like Rosario+Vampire, but reversed and not as good.

Instead of a human hiding his secret while going to a monster school, it’s a vampire hiding her identity while going to a human school. Simple enough. It’s much less lewd and action packed as Rosario and instead is rather quaint and overly comedic.

Our hero can’t keep a secret to save his life, so of course he finds out his crush is actually a vampire! It doesn’t help she’s about as dumb as a bag of rocks and can’t decipher his super obvious feelings towards her. So these two doofuses fall into a comedy of errors as romance tries to prevail while they attempt to keep her secret. It’s amusingly dumb and just the right amount of sweet for my tastes.

Of course, other weirdos begin popping up, causing troubles and starting love triangles. Pretty much what you’d expect from a show like this. You’ve got the class rep, who I though was going to be revealed as a Frankenstein (she’s got a bolt in the back of her head) but turned out to be a freaking miniature alien piloting a life sized robot of herself! There’s the pervy “Wolfman”, that’s actually a buxom woman but she’s a “Wolf” get it? The childhood friend has a spirit inhabiting her glasses, and the principal is a devil that thinks she’s hot shit but is the series buttmonkey. These psychos cause nothing but wild calamity from beginning to end.

The humor got a decent amount of laughs out of me, especially when they really leaned into the absurdity of it all. But the budding romance was what I was here to see, and it’s sweet. We don’t get much for the majority of the series, but our blockheaded camp starts to realize her feelings near the end, and I found it cute. And sometimes all we need is something cute to enjoy.

That said, by the time her feelings started manifesting, I’d started to root for the alien actually. So that made me feel bad for both of them. 😅

This is nothing special, but I didn’t need it to be. It’s light, silly, and sweet. That’s what I wanted, and it’s what I got.

Anime Marches On 2025

I don’t know how this kid got anything done with the weight of his massive balls.

Our hero (who’s like 13) jumps headfirst into the most ridiculously dangerous and life-threatening situations with nary a moment to collect himself. He just does them, no if’s or but's. A genuine madlad.

Katsuhiro Otomo once again splurges and makes (at the time) the most expensive Japanese film ever with a budget of 2.4 billion yen. And you can certainly tell. This baby wants nothing more than to show you every cool concept and idea Otomo had rolling around in his head. This is stuffed with so much steampunk inventions and machinery it actually bloats the film.

This could’ve easily been 90-100 minutes. But Otomo wanted the final hour to be an absurdly cool show of technological prowess (both in the film and in reality) and with what was basically a blank check, he did it with glee. That final hour absolutely rules with all the inventive weapons of war and explosive action, but it’s almost comical how there’s always something going horribly wrong for our heroes.

The first half is definitely good, though the color palette is a bit too brown. I’ve always ed the cool chase sequence where our death defying child attempts escape on a handmade steam-powered monowheel. But the first half is much more interested in showcasing why you should never trust any adult. Especially when there’s money to be made. Our steadfast boy is faced with the realities of progress: it doesn’t matter how impressive or life-changing technology can be, it’ll always ultimately be used for war. Progress never means progressing away from war, only progressing the means as which to wage it. A point the film is clearly saddened to make.

Pretty much every adult is untrustworthy in one way or another, though few are truly “villainous”. But the other child character, Scarlett, is a bright point among all the chaos. He’s a prissy rich girl from America that’s brash, arrogant, and headstrong. Usually I’d hate a character like this, but the film masterfully makes her much more than that. She’s ultimately an innocent and naive little girl that’s drawn to our hero (even develops a crush) and wants him safe regardless if their ideologies clash. The two of them are a great duo.

I personally love the steam-powered medieval armors that carry teenage launchers, but all of the inventions displayed during the massive battle are awesome. Like, I’m sure there’s people that rag on this for how drawn out the climatic battle is, but I adore every second of it. It’s just so full of creativity with stellar animation to bring every idea to life. Can’t forget about the big bad’s trump card: a gargantuan floating fortress that looks like Laputa if you removed all the natures with steam and steel. It literally freezes everything beneath it because of all the high-pressure steam blasting out of it. Definitely an awesome creation.

Stick around for the end credits where we get a montage of our kid becoming an actual hero similar to the Rocketeer. It shows a world changed forever thanks to the events of the film, with technological monstrosities being created for destruction and our hero being there to stop them. I’d love that sequel, get to it Otomo!

Explosions, badass babes battling with laser swords, more explosions, and they even slipped in some jiggle physics. Anno knew what he was about.

A Walk Amongst Monsters #121

Anime Marches On!

While Pokemon will always be the more beloved and popular franchise, I’ve always adored Digimon. Probably because I watched the Digimon Movie seemingly daily as a kid. Had a ton of the toys too. My childhood rocked.

This is my first time seeing the uncut first segment of the Digimon Movie, and I’ve got thoughts.

It’s not fair to compare it to the recut/redubbed version that had Fatboy Slim on the soundtrack, but it’s impossible for me not too. They are night and day, almost everything was altered for the Americanized version, from the music to the dialogue to the tone itself. This has none of the noise that the recut has, instead it’s a surprisingly quiet ordeal. It’s super short on dialogue and instead just lets the events play out before you with no distractions. This is both good and bad.

It’s good because there’s no narration or corny jokes (though I do love them) and that space is filled with a quaint calmness, even as a 9 foot tall Agumon wrecks city property and tries to blow up cars for the hell of it. It took a bit of getting used to honestly. But that stillness works, almost feeling like kids sneaking out to enjoy the quietness of the night. But then there’s the bad.

Once Parrotmon, a giant parrot Digimon if you couldn’t guess, shows up that soft calmness… sticks around. Even as Agumon digivolves into Greymon and faces off against the big bird, there’s no intensity. This short uses the 1928 orchestral piece Boléro almost nonstop, and it’s far from a “hype” song. These big monsters are wailing on each other and all you hear is the dullest marching tune for the 30th time. It’s a terrible choice. It sucks the energy right out of the fight, which is incredible btw.

Seriously, the animation is fluid and crisp, the choreography is dynamic, and the action is powerful. You even get the bits they cut out of the Americanized version, mainly Greymon piercing Parrotmon’s jaw with his horn! Absolutely awesome! But the lack of energy really hurts the overall package. Even the sound effects for the blows are a bit too quiet.

I’m not saying you need to insert the American theme song like The Movie did, but the original Japanese theme song is still incredibly hype and you use it during the end credits! Why not use it during the actual climatic battle? I genuinely don’t get it.

While that is ultimately disappointing, this is still a gorgeously animated short (apparently the only Digimon animation to be done with Cel Animation). The colors are popping, the backgrounds are soft and comforting, the lighting is impeccable, the actual character animation is top notch, this looks amazing. I just wish I felt a bit more by the end.

So looks like I prefer the American recut, kind of a shame honestly. I’d been wanting to see this for so long, and it sucks when something like that doesn’t live up to your expectations. Still, incredible animation and a visually awesome final battle, just lacking in intensity where it needed it. But I’ve heard the sequel, Our War Game, is leagues better than its Americanized recut. So here’s hoping.

There’s always been a specific… thing that happens in certain movies that’s always scratched a part of my brain. And I’ve never been able to accurately describe it.

But I’ll try. It’s a strange mix of the unknown and pulp storytelling. What I mean is, sometimes I’ll watch something that’ll show me something fantastical… and refuse to elaborate on it. No backstory or information, no exploring or discovering, no revelation for why this is happening. It’s something truly unknown to the audience by the end of the film. Mainly because that tidbit isn’t essential, it doesn’t matter to the story being told. It leaves a bit of mystery for me to geek over you know?

It bleeds into my other favorite vibe: desolate/forgotten/lovecraftian worlds and civilizations. Combine them, and I’m a fan for life.

I find that “Vibe”, if you will, incredibly satisfying. Mainly because it makes my imagination go wild. I also get that vibe from a lot of old-school Sci-fi and Fantasy art.

An example would be from the cult classic: Equinox. At one point, our intrepid heroes stumble upon a dope castle far off deep in their local woods. And… that’s it. We never reach the castle, learn anything about it, it’s just part of the strange, pulpy story they’re telling. That’s the vibe.

(See also: a lot of Stephen Kings short stories)

I don’t expect anyone else to get it, but regardless of that, I just need to organize a list of all these films before I go mad.

There sure are a lot of low-rated films on this site that I’ve happily given a score which most would view as lunacy. These are films that, for whatever reason, I greatly enjoy while the masses willfully blind themselves to the film’s greatness.

Whatever. This is cinema for 1 person: Me.

Anyways, this list is for films I’ve seen with a 2.5 rating or less that I’ve given a 3.5 or higher. (Ratings subject to change of course, but if it’s on here it had a 2.5 rating when added)
Some of these ratings are oooold, so who knows if I still hold those ratings true. Seems like an opportunity to rewatch some of these old films and maybe write up a review or two. Just a thought.

You know, I kind of forgot how much I loved dinosaurs when I was a kid. Like I understand boys were usually into dinos, but I was immersed in them. Any book, toy, or film with dinosaurs was something I was interested in. Especially film. Thanks to my Dad I was raised from an early age on films like The Valley of Gwangi or King Kong. So that was a boon.

Just like my Kaiju list, I wanted to revisit all my childhood classics while also exploring the subgenre to a much greater degree. There are so many dinosaur films that cover so many genres. Horror, sci-fi, comedy, erotic, it goes on and on.

I’m excited to get started.

Ruh 2f4i5h Roh Raggy! - A Scooby-Doo Ranked List https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/kaijuman/list/ruh-roh-raggy-a-scooby-doo-ranked-list/ letterboxd-list-38689273 Thu, 9 Nov 2023 16:26:22 +1300 <![CDATA[

Scooby-Doo is probably my most beloved franchise, I grew up on the shows and yearly films and that childhood enjoyment has carried over to adulthood.

But there’s a surprising amount of Scooby content I’ve just never watched. I intend to rectify that with this list. These “challenge” lists have done wonders in getting me to check out films I’ve never seen, and revisit one’s I’ve forgotten.

So I’m quite excited to make my way through these films, I get to experience films for the first time and get to rekindle my love of childhood classics.

I plan on doing these chronologically, except for the first few films. I’m going to watch the ones I know I don’t like first, just to get them out of the way.

Anime Marches On 2023 w2849 https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/kaijuman/list/anime-marches-on-2023/ letterboxd-list-31366530 Tue, 14 Feb 2023 16:22:21 +1300 <![CDATA[

You know what time it is. Another year, another challenge for all you anime enthusiasts. I’ve been looking forward to this for months now and it’s finally here. Anime Marches On is back once again!

I’ve been thinking about how I run these challenges and I’ve decided to relax it a bit. I absolutely adore anime but even other anime lovers can get overwhelmed trying to track down, watch and review so many animes. I want this “challenge” to be a fun time for everyone who’s interested in watching more anime. Less a challenge and more an opportunity, you know?

So while this is still a challenge I’m allowing for more breathing room in of the amount of anime to watch. If you’re interested in watching more, by all means feel free to add as many animes as you want to your list.

The rules are as stated:
Starting March 1st Watch and Review:
1 Anime Series
3 80’s Anime
3 90’s Anime
3 2000’s Anime
3 2010’s Anime
1 Non-Miyazaki Studio Ghibli film
1 Go Nagai Anime

Be sure to tag your reviews with Anime Marches On 2023 so we can all read each other’s reviews.

Be sure to leave a link to your list in the comments so I can add you to the challenge.

That’s about it really, I hope to see you all there in March so we can all dive into the wide world of anime together.

Times certainly flies my friends, somehow this years Hooptober has already snuck up on me.

Another month of sampling the good and the very bad horror films the world has to offer. I’m hyped to get back into it, and I’m most definitely looking forward to seeing what all of you guys review.

The rules are simple:
There must be 31 films

6 countries

8 decades

2 insect centered films

1 horror film set in space or the future (relative to when it was released)

2 animated films

1 bloodthirsty old person/people film

2 1970s regional US films
The worst horror sequel from the 1990s that you haven't seen and can access.

1 German Silent

5 Films from David Cronenberg, Ti West, Bill Rebane, Charles B. Pierce, William Grefe and/or Joy N. Houck Jr.

2 Christopher Lee films

1 film with a musician or band in it

1 Stephen King adaptation that is not the first go around.

1 Lon Chaney film. (NOT JR)
And 1 Tobe Hooper Film (There must ALWAYS be a Hooper film)

Easy enough though I did have some difficulty selecting the perfect films for these categories.

Make sure to tag them with Hooptober9 so we can all enjoy each others reviews, and have a rocking Halloween!

This list was suggested by DBC, thanks for the idea! It seems like anime (outside of Ghibli or major releases) is sidelined on this website and doesn't get enough recognition. So i'm making this list as a way to bring leeser/older films and OVAs to peoples attention.
No Ghibli (except their music video) or other big movies (Your Name) this is just for anime that isn't widely known.
This list is only anime I have personally seen, if you what to suggest anime for me to see in the comments, I'd love that!

Warning: These are anime I like, meaning a lot of this list is going to be full of.....less than stellar anime. Enjoy!

(It’s fun coming back to this list seeing where I ranked films based solely on memories. Can’t wait to see how much changes on my A Walk Amongst Monsters list)

As my namesake implies, I love the Kaiju (Giant Monster) genre.

Ever since I was a child I’ve been entranced by giant monsters. It didn’t matter if they were Japanese or American, British or North Korean, if there were big monsters tearing up the screen I’d watch it.

 1. Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
 2. Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris
 3. The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms
 4. Destroy All Monsters
 5. The Super Inframan
 6. Rampage
 7. Rodan
 8. Gamera 2: Attack of Legion
 9. Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla
 10. Cloverfield

You know Fall is on its way when the buzz around Hooptober begins again. It’s here, as are we all, staying safe and watching horror. I had a blast last year so I’m back again to throw my hat into the ring.

Horror made this letterboxd , it made me. I don’t know what I’d be like without it’s presence. So I’m gonna honor its undying legacy with my usual mixture of beloved classics and strange oddities.

Horror I’d love. Horror is life.

QUICK EASY RULES:

6 countries
8 decades
2 folk horror
4 films from 1981
2 films from your birth year
2 haunted house films
The worst Part 2 that you haven't seen and can access. (I realize that this will take a little work)
1 film set in the woods
1 Kaiju or Kong film (not the new K v. G)
2 Hammer films
3 films with a person of color as director or lead. (excluding Asian)
3 Asian horror films.

And 1 Tobe Hooper Films (There must ALWAYS be a Hooper film)

Gotta review them all which is always fun. And it officially begins September 15th! With it staring so soon I’ll hopefully get to add some additional films to my viewing schedule!

Edit: Now with Bonus Films!

It’s that time of year again. A time to explore the vast amounts of anime that exist, lurking on Letterboxd. So, I’d be happy if you’d all me once again to see just what we can uncover.

It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since I started this challenge. I’m happy it managed to gain some traction and hope this year will be even more successful!

—————————————————————————
The Rules Are Simple:
As long as the anime is on Letterboxd and is in fact anime, it’s fair game
1 pre-1970 anime
1 70’s anime

5 90’s anime
5 2000’s anime
3 2010’s anime
1 Osamu Dezaki anime
1 Rintaro anime
3 anime of your choice
And if you’re feeling up to a bonus round: review Robot Carnival
—————————————————————————
Please tag each watch/review with “Anime Marches On 2019” so we can follow and read your reviews.

Feel free to watch as much anime as you can stomach!

Kynky’s Birth Year Challenge 5532b https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/kaijuman/list/kynkys-birth-year-challenge/ letterboxd-list-2787759 Wed, 11 Jul 2018 19:55:26 +1200 <![CDATA[

Saw this cool little challenge pop up and thought, why not? You can only pick movies from the year you where born (1995). The number of movies is your current age (22). All movies must be first times.

Simple enough. I decided to pick some weird movies this time (sure hope I can find them). I’ve got until November 19th to complete this challenge, should I fail I will add 1 more movie to my list.

Here’s Kynky’s list and rules

Anime Marches On! 4d3q1u https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/kaijuman/list/anime-marches-on/ letterboxd-list-2179473 Thu, 18 Jan 2018 16:30:30 +1300 <![CDATA[

(Yeah bad name but that's all I could think of)

I love Anime and want more of Letterboxd to get introduced to one of my favorite genres. So, I've created a little challenge for you all. In the month of March I want you to watch and review the classics and cult classics. Discover a hidden gem. Voice your opinions of this great genre. I certainly will.

Now I have no clue if this will gain any ground, but I'm making this challenge in hopes some will me on this journey. Good luck!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The rules are simple:
(Check the notes for more information on the rules)
Movies or OVAS allowed (as long as it’s on letterboxd)
5 anime’s from the 80’s
5 anime from the 90’s
5 anime from the 00’s
5 anime’s from the 10’s
1 Go Nagai anime
2 Lupin the Third animes (1 TV special and 1 theatrical film/OVA)
1 Yoshiaki Kawajiri anime
1 60s anime
1 70s anime
Feel free to watch more if you want!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lots of leeway on this one I'll it. But this is my first challenge, so no need to go hard on this one. The rules may seem strange but I think it allows for lots of discovery.

If you want to re-watch an anime instead of watching one you've never seen, that's fine. Try not to do that for most of the challenge though.

Please tag each review with "anime marches on!" and send me your list so I can add you.

Final thing, please no mixing. If your Lupin film is from the 70's, that's either your 70's film or your Lupin film not both. Thank You. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
