Seeing Kong get his ass beat by Godzilla will never not be fun.
I mean, it’s not even a fair fight. Godzilla wipes the floor with Kong the entire film. He’s relentless to the point he’s basically bullying Kong. Kong even gets a power-up weapon and still can’t get a dub. They try and spin it and say Kong “won” a fight that wasn’t even over yet. Yeah right buckos.
I was kinda dreading a rewatch after my disappointing revisit to KOTM, especially ing how annoying these characters are, but holy shit this still absolutely kicked ass.
People always complained how boring the characters and human subplots were in the Japanese films, but replace these characters and subplots with ANY of those and this film goes up a star. Everyone is just insufferable here. They’re either comically inept, dull, or a mixture of the two. It really does suck.
But all is forgiven thanks to these action sequences! Talk about a complete improvement over the last two films. Beautifully crafted destruction that’s gorgeously lit and full of color. No “too hard to see” action here, it’s all completely visible. They immediately prove that too with a dope opening attack at night. It’s exciting, vibrant, and a taste of what’s to come.
The film is at its best when the Kaiju's are breaking something or someone, and luckily you get a lot of that. Every fight stands out from the intense duel in the ocean, to the neon smackdown in Hong Kong, and to the tag-team wrestling match against Mechagodzilla (whose design still sucks).
I had way more fun than I expected. GvK is full of flair and personality (good and bad), not to mention action and destruction, and its faults can’t strip my enjoyment from me. Dumb fun in the best way.
