What a way to start a film.
The nonchalant “mo, you poisoned him” kills me.
]]>The ending stung. Cinematography needs infinite flowers.
I’m lost for words.
It’s incredible how every time theres a scene between Cooper and Lady Raven, Cooper’s acting skills almost completely disappear. This might be the first movie that makes me complain about acting. Its a big confidence and chemistry issue.
Good movie though. Campy a little. But good. Kid cudi’s acting was a little wacky for me too but it worked cause he wasn’t trying to convince us he’s within reach of a serial killer.
[Pre-end waffling]
I don’t think the writers know how concerts work or look.
Is that Russ dude? You gotta be joshing.
KID CUDI
They cooked with the dolly zoom in the bathroom.
[Post-research waffling]
It turns out the actor playing Lady Raven is actually a singer with like 3 acting credits. Interesting choice by the casting directors considering none of the singing was live and the piano playing was off-camera. I’m gonna end the review here now, I’m talking about this acting too much.
Interesting premise. I get what the movie was going for and it was executed in a decent way, but its comedy elements made it fall flat for me overall. The ending was the best part, which you can say about a lot of movies but i mean i couldn’t take it serious in any other place except the realization that it’s a commentary on manipulation and power dynamics.
I don’t know if its the coloring/cinematic aspect of this film, or the acting, or both but this felt like a long snl sketch and i dont like it.
I forgot Common and Ti in this movie lmaoooooo.
RZA!!!!
My man
]]>I feel awful for enjoying this cause it feels like a killer sympathy film, but damn this was formatted/written perfectly.
Reminds me of A Different Man if Oswald had a different ending.
Debating rewatching this in like 20 years based on the first point i made.
What happened to Jack Black?
Is this guy about to kill himself?
…
Perhaps not.
Nice movie, interesting twists. Shot well. Big fan of Catholic cathedrals so was hype to see this taking place in one.
]]>So much to unpack.
You’re immediately pulled in, trying to process the intense and bloody images of the first scene, then strung along this rich plot going on an expansive journey showing all different walks of life in the rural South.
The camerawork and scoring was masterful. Many moments where I couldn’t stop shaking my head in disbelief. Even the small details like when Cornbread was introduced and the film size shifted (?), or the sky motif.
But most of all, that huge music sequence was nuts and I really hope it remains relevant for years to come. The ambition behind it and how well composed it was is just insane.
Delroy Lindo deserves his flowers. Random but needs to be said.
Thinking about the Lord’s prayer scene gives me chills, considering what the main vampire dude said. Man.
This whole movie looked and sounded great, and was executed beautifully. A lot of movies make the mistake of prioritizing aesthetics with no great writing but this is far from that.
Fire movie, insane cast.
I need more films like this with black mysticism, hoodoo shit, etc. Especially in the mainstream.
Like a hour after writing this I’m wondering how the main vampire dude didn’t burn to dust in the sun when he first appeared, and I’m realizing a big component of the use of vampires in this movie probably was a sun down town analogy. I don’t care if I’m reaching, I’m running with this.
]]>Where did it all go wrong with Viola Davis’ filmography? When did this start?
]]>I wanna be Jeff Bridges so bad but I also wanna be John Goodman so bad.
Steve Buscemi’s versatility even in type casting purgatory is nuts.
]]>Only watching this for the bombs and unfunny joe rogan riffs. I normally would feel gross for logging this but I’m shameless right now.
I should watch a richard pryor special immediately after this.
Wait no. Joe rogan special next to double down on this blasphemous act.
This adam ray guy is not funny. I think this show’s format is better in person while inebriated heavily. I’d imagine. Why is joe rogan not speaking?
Shane gillis carried.
IS THIS BLOKE READING JOKES OFF A CARD AS THE CLOSER???? PATRICE ONEAL IS SQUIRMING A BIT IN HIS GRAVE (he was a very large man, i cannot imagine a full roll in that tight space).
]]>How did Ryan Gosling’s career survive after this movie
]]>Watched on Friday April 11, 2025.
]]>Jeremy allen white and intervention circles.
Cute movie.
]]>FLOWER CALLED NOWHERE NEEDLE DROP HELL YEAH
Damn
]]>Dawn Chorus bit moved me.
]]>Explaining what incels are to my mom.
]]>Shot on film, starring Colman Domingo, theater shit. This definitely got a Oscar in my heart off rip.
I could feel the tears in my chest. There’s real joy in the wholesome moments. I’m permanently gonna be fucked up over how Divine G got did in the hearing.
Almost bursted into tears at the ending. Man. Movie almost got me too many times. Amazing performances and writing.
]]>Watched on Saturday March 15, 2025.
]]>Every scene/shot is composed like a painting. I’m really drawn to the sky in this movie. Scoring is really good too.
If the first half of this movie looks this beautiful, the shift to horror’s gonna be insane.
The stop motion around (15:00) and the shots at (15:26) and (15:33). Dawg.
I gotta watch more of this dude’s films what the fuck. I’m bout to run this back 15 minutes in like a album.
Masterpiece.
Why these girls naked as hell in some parts though? I can’t just brush past this I’m sorry. Nobody mentioning this, and I think I’m hallucinating. I’m going to drink a bottle of water now.
Was not expecting that Challengers moment.
]]>I still have a good handful of Wes films to watch, but I can’t imagine this one being outdone.
Also R.I.P. Gene.
]]>Yall ever play facade before?
Hell nah this baby really ugly as hell.
Sorry.
Very fucked up movie.
This like the coolest anti-premarital sex campaign ever though.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind mentioned.
Beautifully shot and written. Painful.
Waiting for the theater rerelease 20 years from now.
]]>The old people that saw this and Eraserhead back to back in theaters had no idea how spoiled they were.
Damn you, geriatrics.
]]>Genuinely what is happening in this? Somebody get this woman a cheese burger her sugars low or something.
This feels like a type 1 diabetes awareness film with a youth documentary twist. I’m so lost man.
As bad of a movie this is, in my opinion, it’s a cozy watch. Cool atmosphere. Picked up toward the middle-end when the random interview cutaways kinda got contextualized more. I’m guessing they were bits and pieces of conversations had at the parties?
I don’t like the romance between that old woman and that little boy, who still has to hide his weed stash from his mom. Very peculiar turn. I saw it coming, but god why.
]]>Had to take a 2 minute break after the “I don’t think Patrick should be here for this” part.
Holy shit.
]]>There’s something special about the way Quentin’s films reimagine cultures and weaves them together, that makes them feel so ahead of their time. He may slightly miss the mark a little in some parts to some people, even in this probably, but this is an undeniable classic.
Amazing dialogue, plot, pacing, score, cinematography, and fight sequences. Even more great qualities, but that’s too many commas.
I also need to point out how insane the animation towards the middle was. I was expecting a little flex— like 15 seconds— but whoever was behind that fucking killed.
I have no qualms with this movie at all. Just the feet bits. Get those dogs off my screen please gang.
[pre ending yap]
Why must Quentin involve us in his freaky feet fantasies?
The tyrone sound effect usage is killing me.
]]>Left wanting more, but also satisfied with the ending.
]]>Freaky. Cool though.
]]>This made me feel a lot of things.
]]>Watched on Monday February 17, 2025.
]]>Very appreciative seeing someone geek out about Stand!.
…he was doing chopped and screwed before chopped and screwed.
Put my thoughts into words fully.
Equally disturbing and beautiful realizing how disconnected future generations and producers in those generations are to the history/trauma of the artists they sample and listen to.
I knew this was a tragic story, but this really put it into perspective without holding back. The way everyone speaks of him and he makes no appearance in this makes it seem like he’s gone, but knowing he’s not makes it more sad to me than it would’ve been if he really did .
Watched on Sunday February 16, 2025.
]]>Oi..
Keep getting Jamiroquai-scared everytime Heath puts on that beanie
]]>Watching Wes films as a theater stage manager/tech crew member probably the peak level of enjoyment. I’m neither of those, but the way he composes shots and designs the sets is nuts.
She was dynamite in the sack, by the way. Lmaooooooo
WILLEM DAFOE!!!!!!!!!
Wesley freaked it on this one like crazy.
]]>Neighbor shit, neighbor shit, neighbor-neighbor-neighbor shit
She hogs the j and asks “do you really wanna hit this?” That’s bothering (‘sorry to bother you’ reference?) me badly, I don’t know. Very greedy, no bud etiquette.
]]>GIANTS IN THE SKY MENTIONED
Lil timmy tim swag too tuff…
Nevermind, he sucks in this. Like his character I mean.
This really a good ass coming of age movie.
I wish that one priest had a bit more character development/added context past the last conversation though. Super small plot point. Was intrigued. Literally has nothing to do with the coming of age aspect of the movie. I should delete this paragraph honestly. Maybe. Was just in my mind. Football coach priest dude was funny.
Nice movie.
]]>Are these people genuinely tweaking off lead paint chips? What is happening?
Alien dudes lowkey owned those colonizer twerps.
10 minutes in thoroughly enjoying how dated and blatantly indie this movie is. I just know the score’s gonna go crazy.
Insane needle drops so far. A Sa-ra, Sea and Cake, or Soulquarian drop would solidify this entirely.
None of those dropped, but I’m very satisfied with the film and its score.
Barry Jenkins’ very limited use of color, muting the colors throughout most of the movie, is genius. Was definitely an eyesore at first though.
The pacing of the movie, mostly all taking place in one day, is great too.
Very cozy film, cool shots, choppy indie 2008 camera cuts, subtle but not so subtle messaging.
Oh yeah Barry really knows how to commentate on blackness. Very appreciated. Gentrification commentary also always appreciated.
Will be watching again soon.
This nun just did like 20 bicycle backflips in the sky. Hard.
Damn.
The chapters concept was genius.
First Harmony movie I’ve seen. I need to tap in immediately.
]]>Eh.
]]>Ray liotta in comedy movies gotta be one of my favorite genders.
This movie stinks in an endearing way a little bit. It was worth seeing Michael Cera play a Tyler Durden figure.
I’m now going to forget this movie ever happened and try to re-experience the cringe 5 years from now. I mean this positively.
Absolute cinema. Was sad about how they did the bird, but the send off was peak.
]]>Really cool seeing this evolve into ‘The Substance’.
]]>Over here sad about this movie then the one dude goes “Let’s just take this frame by frame”.
I can’t interpret this in any other way than being a film about motherhood. Am I tweaking? Like I see the underlying themes, but that’s a big takeaway, right?
Was gonna say the motherhood aspect’s the most powerful until the last 30 minutes of the movie started. I should’ve seen this in theaters man..
Insane execution.
]]>Oh. I did not like this.
]]>Am i tweaking or is that steak still alive
Sound design masterclass so far
Lots of red
Fire needle drops
What… everything just deflated I feel betrayed by the writers
The actors did really good though
]]>I should’ve finished watching this like a decade ago. The writers room went insane and I need to find out every bit that didn’t make it in the final cut.
Michael Cera-Mae Whitman reunion in this is huge. They put that in specifically for me.
Pre-ending yap:
Intro is insane.
Wow. Fire. Will watch again. Nice.
WILLEM
