]]>Hot Jewish union man....yeah I have a type. 😍
]]>Matt Berry as a beaver making his way through a massive tree absolutely killed me.
Trying to round out my Oscars checklist, and this one was a delightful excuse to continue putting off watching The Substance.
]]>So deserving of an Oscar. Arguably the central thesis in this doc is that people in the western world aren't paying attention to the IDF's atrocities in Gaza, and it's cruel that this film isn't getting full theatrical run and not enough press in its Oscar campaign. I urge everyone to seek out this film, not only because the subject matter is important, but also because the filmmaking is excellent-- the way we are a fly on the wall day in and day out of the Israeli army demolishing Palestinian homes, schools, and entire villages. We feel Yuval's desperate guilt, Basel's defeated anger, the children's visceral fear. It's a culmination of years of on-the-ground journalism by Palestinian activist Basel himself, and the effect is a frank, enraging, heartbreaking look at fighting authoritarianism amidst the attention economy.
]]>Deserves every bit of praise it gets! The runtime is not for the faint of heart but it doesn't drag...it feels like it makes sense to be that long. I felt like I was immersed in a different world.
]]>Charming, broke me open 💔

]]>This is what the Lumière Brothers had in mind for the pinnacle of cinema. Battleship Potemkin move over, HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS is the peak of the art form now.
Had SO much fun seeing this in a nearly full theater. The audience was all laughing hysterically most of the time, and we all felt like we experienced something special. Weird and wonderful, bizarre and beautiful. 🥹🦫

]]>Seen virtually at the Globe Docs Film Festival. Such a fascinating documentary-- every filmmaker and film student should see it. Continuity editing built the cinematic grammar in the early days of filmmaking: the over the shoulder shot, match on action, the 180 rule-- it has become invisible. Featuring interviews with psychological researchers like Jeff Zacks (whose book Flicker is on my bookshelf!), and titan of editing Walter Murch, the doc explores the cognitive processes that movies harness in order to bring the audience into the story.

]]>You like the weird shit that makes you think—and feel—and then think some more.
To you, movies are meant to Capital E Entertain. You love memorable, quotable, well-written, complicated characters. The kind you’ll still be discussing and dissecting years from now, and will maybe even dress up as for Halloween. With a wink and a slew of nuanced details, of course. Anyway, you’re attracted to smart humor that’s specific to the story and to you—the quirkier and weirder, the better.
