]]>Film program curated for final project in Major Film Movements: Global New Waves film course!
In Susan Sontag’s prolific essay Notes on Camp, she explains that “...the whole point of Camp is to dethrone the serious. Camp is playful, anti-serious. More precisely, Camp involves a new, more complex relation to ‘the serious.’ One can be serious about the frivolous, frivolous about the serious”. On the contrary, surrealism is defined by dream logic - with intentionally jarring and absurd imagery. Both surrealism and camp thrive with juxtaposition, which is what makes films with elements of both so intriguing and effective. The films in this program find the fantastical and bizarre in the everyday, but do it with a heavy wink. Shockingly absurd and utterly self-aware, these films find their women protagonists in incoherent worlds that defy explanation - but also don’t ask for any. Each of these features is a cinematic rollercoaster ride that leaves the viewer unsure whether to laugh, cry, or scream. These films have elements of comedy, drama, horror, mystery, noir, fairy tale, satire, and more - but are united in their kitschy portrayal of dream worlds.
Daisies is an unexplainable feminist farce and a staple of the Czech New Wave. Chytilova’s masterpiece follows two young girls, both named Marie, through a colorful world of their own creation. The film navigates its surrealist elements with irony, humor, and sharp critiques of the bourgeois and patriarchal society.
House is your childhood nightmares come to life - literally. The concept for the film was born from stories Obayashi collected from his daughter’s dreams. With childlike sensibilities, psychedelic visuals and over-the-top acting, House is a cinematic experience comparable to nothing else.
Mulholland Drive finds American auteur and master of surrealism David Lynch at his most fully realized. A distorted portrait of sunny Los Angeles through the eyes of an aspiring actress and a tortured amnesiac, nothing is as it seems in this genre-bending noir. Stunning, dreamlike cinematography and off-putting editing keep the viewer on the edge of their seat the whole time.
The Lure takes the classic story of The Little Mermaid and twists it on its head. The film finds the perfect balance between gaudy and gory - transforming the fairy tale into a terrifying musical adventure. Following two young mermaids in 1980s Poland, the film’s lush cinematography and muted color palette pay homage to B-movies of the past while creating its own utterly distinctive, genre-defying style.
A picture-perfect suburban town slowly begins to unravel in the outlandish dark comedy Greener Grass. Soccer moms with adult braces, children turning into dogs, and a candy-colored world make this satire a delightfully weird romp.
