Haven't seen this in a while and thought it'd be good to rewatch it before the remake. Disney's early 2000s animated movies are unrivalled, so many strong ideas executed largely to a really strong standard and Lilo & Stitch is no different. It's pure fun, adorable, with multiple charming dynamics. Obviously the titular characters but Lilo and Nani have such a realistic and relatable sibling dynamic that really carries the heart of the film.

I do think the short runtime means the pace is quite fast with not as much bonding moments as I'd have liked before they become best friends and Stitch starts talking, so I really hope the remake is good and can build on some of the things the original could have done stronger if it was given a longer runtime.

IMAX Early Screening

The Final Reckoning is a disappointing conclusion to the Mission: Impossible franchise that crumbles under the weight of its expectations and desire to constantly one up its predecessors. It has just enough spectacle and playfulness to keep it chugging throughout its exhausting runtime but leaves you with a feeling that it could have been so much better if they actually had a script written before the cameras started rolling. I can see why reviews were far more mixed this time around, and me being such a big fan of the franchise is the only reason my rating isn't lower.

This genuinely might be one of the most poorly edited movies I've ever seen, the amount of flashbacks present throughout is so overwhelming and leaves you disoriented as the movie constantly calls back to previous installments in ways that feel jarring and so out of place for the franchise. When you couple that with the awful transitions reminiscent of Star Wars (but done poorly) it's like someone discovered how to use Avid for the first time. What doesn't help matters either is the exposition, pretty much the entire movie is scene after scene of characters explaining what will happen in the next scene multiple times with actors delivering their lines as if they were communicating with a child.

Speaking of characters, this movie has far too many of them and sets up multiple small arcs and journeys that go absolutely nowhere, taking away the focus from the IMF team we've grown to love over the last almost thirty years. It is once again obvious that they tried replacing Ilsa with Grace except the movie doesn't even try and explore her becoming an IMF agent and growing as a character, instead she literally just does the exact stuff Ilsa would have done had Rebecca Ferguson not wanted to leave the franchise. The last film made such a big deal out of the anatagonist Gabriel and his connections to Ethan but it went absolutely nowhere in this one and Gabriel himself is a useless character who goes out like a joke and makes you wonder what the point of him even was. The way McQuarrie handled most of these characters really sours these last two movies, I can't say I have any real interest in seeing Dead/Final Reckoning again.

To be fair it has some pretty cool action scenes in the second half of the film (even if the third act is more or less a complete copy of Fallout's but with stakes way too high to really matter) and at least the movie looks every bit as much as its rumoured 400M budget would have you believe it does. I'm really struggling to find positives in it beyond that, I really hoped this would be better than Dead Reckoning but at least that felt like a complete movie and not the cutting room mess that this is.

Overall I've come away from this movie pretty indifferent about it. Despite the supposed finality and constant callbacks to the previous films (including tying together previous plot points I never expected) it ends in a way that leaves things open for more so it failed to give me the closure on this franchise I was hoping to get. For what was meant to be this big, epic two-part event it instead felt kinda meaningless? Maybe McQuarrie's heart wasn't in it this time around which is a shame but whatever, Rogue Nation and Fallout is the real two-part conclusion to this franchise for me.

🎬 Road to Reckoning 🎬

7/8

I enjoyed this a lot more on a rewatch, it's definitely a better film than I realised but its flaws are even clearer to me now. It's more of the same as Rogue Nation and Fallout but with an overwhelming amount of exposition, a third act sequence that goes on far too long and a disastrous character death that will always leave a sour taste in my mouth.

This franchise had always struggled with its female characters, far too many of them got introduced only to never show up again or get killed off. That was until Ilsa Faust came along, who was for Mission: Impossible what Vespa was for James Bond. At least she was, until Christopher McQuarrie decided to shamelessly kill her off in a poorly executed way, replacing her with the shiny new model without giving the characters a chance to breathe. It's such a glaring flaw in the movie and regresses the franchise back to how it used to be. The only logical reason for her death to be brushed aside by everyone is because it's all part of a plan to trick the Entity, but I'm fully expecting to be disappointed in the next instalment in that regard.

There really is a lot to love in this movie though, it's surprisingly funny and I do like Grace as a character even if she was used as a shameless Ilsa replacement. I wasn't all that fussed on the Entity when I first saw the film but I do think it's a fresh direction to take the franchise and I think Gabriel's backstory with Ethan was a lot less jarring this time around. Overall it's a good movie that started great but lost so much steam after Ilsa's death. Better than I but still no way near as good as it could have been if certain elements had been executed in better ways, and I hope The Final Reckoning can improve its flaws to make a fitting finale for this franchise.

Fallout is a masterpiece from start to finish. Not just the pinnacle of the Mission: Impossible franchise but the action genre altogether, a true Hollywood blockbuster that is unmatched in scale and spectacle. It has everything I could ever want in a movie like this and it'll be a long time before anything comes close to it.

The cast is one of the greatest ensembles out there, the plot is constantly engaging with twists and turns that both put our characters in tense scenarios and sets up multiple genre-defining set pieces spread across the 2h30m runtime, which always flies by on every rewatch. Lorne Balfe's score is the best in the franchise and McQuarrie's direction and writing is the strongest its been with this entry.

If the franchise ended here then I'd have been more than satisfied with it as a finale. It closes off the narrative that started three films ago with the highest stakes so far and gave Ethan a happy ending with Ilsa and the rest of the IMF team. If The Final Reckoning doesn't undo the disastrous decision in Dead Reckoning to kill off Ilsa then Fallout is the end of this franchise for me, and what a great ending it is.

Rogue Nation is one of my favourites in the franchise. Christopher McQuarrie builds upon all the good that came before from previous directors and elevates the franchise to new heights with greater action sequences and the introduction of Rebecca Ferguson's Ilsa Faust, who is one of the greatest female action characters ever made. Brad Bird was a perfect fit for the franchise and built off of the ensemble direction that JJ Abrams took the franchise, adding two great characters to the roster in Jeremy Renner's Brandt and Paula Patton's Jane, the latter of which criminally hasn't come back to the franchise and I hope she gets one last hurrah in The Final Reckoning.

Week 20

Bloodlines is easily the best Final Destination movie and it isn't even close. It has great kills, entertaining characters and a constant subversion of expectations that allows for some of the smartest and funniest moments in the entire franchise.

From the first minute you can tell there was so much love for the franchise and an intent to not just make generic slop but an actual movie movie this time around. Deeper characters and a more expansive lore breathes new life into the moment to moment scenes between the kills. Also Tony Todd's last appearance is so beautiful and I had to hold back tears because of it which is never something I thought I'd say about any scene in a Final Destination movie.

Overall this is one of the most fun movies I've seen in cinemas for a while. It knows what made the franchise such a powerhouse in the 2000s while attempting to fix the flaws of its predecessors. It's already a critical success and the highest rated movie in the franchise, and it's inevitable that Bloodlines is going to be a massive box office hit while bringing a wave of anxiety and existential dread to a new generation.

Seeing how his journey ends made me emotional in ways I never felt when watching this film before and shows the value of spin-off material that can retroactively strengthen established storylines and characters.

Time to rewatch one of my favourite franchises before The Final Reckoning brings it to a close next week. The first Mission: Impossible is such a good standalone spy thriller that is De Palma through and through, rebooting a TV series for a new generation and laying down many foundations that the later films would follow.

It has a 90s charm that makes it feel unique compared to the more modern entries in the 2010s and while it's not one of my favourites in the franchise there's no denying it was a great start that set it up for box office success for the next (almost) 30 years.

I unironically would have liked to have seen him do more actual ing but this was a fun movie that took what worked about the original and did so much more with it, embracing a wackier tone for the better and taking full advantage of Ben Affleck and Jon Berthnal's amazing chemistry.

It has Ben Affleck hijacking an in-person dating event in one scene while learning a hoedown throwdown in another, and then there's Xavier's school of children with learning difficulties that are practically costumes away from becoming X-Men. Week 18

I was cautiously optimistic about Thunderbolts* but I didn't expect it to be this good, it's easily one of the best MCU movies of the post-Endgame slate. It executes the found family trope in such a charming way that allows every character to shine, weaving their individual traumas into a beautiful exploration of mental health and the strength of togetherness without undermining it with forced comedy.

That said the movie has comedy when it needs to, from start to finish it's full of so many funny moments where the characters are put into scenarios to utilise their powers and they all have great chemistry together. I was surprised just how much I liked seeing Ghost and Walker again considering they were nothing characters in their previous appearances, but everyone here is so relatable in their own ways that I think make them more compelling than any new solo hero that's been introduced post-Endgame. Yelena and Red Guardian steal the show in of comedy but it's the tenderness of Bob that gives the movie so much heart and a uniqueness compared to other superhero movies, with a resolution to his arc that had me tearing up. It's so easy to root for characters and a team full of flaws that makes them relatable.

I'd have liked the third act to have a bit more meat to it and there's a moment at the end involving the press that requires far too much suspension of disbelief but overall I'm really happy with Thunderbolts* and look forward to seeing where these characters go next. After the disaster of Brave New World this was a much needed return to form for the MCU, there's no excuses for why each movie doesn't get the same care and attention as this one did. Hopefully The Fantastic Four can carry on the momentum in the build up to Doomsday because the MCU needs more movies of this quality.

Week 17

This movie pleasantly surprised me in some ways and disappointed me in others. While I do think it's a shame we didn't get a direct adaption of the game I can understand why they went in a different direction considering the source material is already cinematic. That said they didn't take advantage of an excellent time loop premise, turning what started off as this decades Cabin in the Woods into another generic horror with just enough going for it to be a good time.

I was so excited to see different genres explored over each new night but the movie spreads itself too thin with very little time to explore the tropes and conventions of the genres, with an overeliance on jump scares instead of well done atmospheric dread. I was disappointed to see the found footage genre quickly explored in a montage rather than having a section dedicated to it, especially when the scariest part of the film happened here and deserved time to shine rather than starting and ending in a couple seconds.

That said I liked the characters even if they were a little shallow and this is probably the most gory horror I've seen since Evil Dead 2013, I have no idea how it ed for a 15 with some of the cool kills on display here. Overall it's an alright prequel to the game (that doesn't expand on the lore as much as I wish it did), and has some great kills that were deserving of a better movie that embraced being a love letter to the horror genre and the nature of video game decisions. It's a Spielberg movie without the charm. It's a Gareth Edwards movie without the scale. It's a corporate piece of slop with all the mediocrity you expect, a typical Russo brothers movie when they don't have the hand of Kevin Feige to guide them.

Somewhere deep within the bloated runtime, budget and cast I'm sure there's a decent movie somewhere. Yet it all feels so sterile, so overproduced, from filmmakers who have really struggled to make anything of note beyond producer driven Marvel movies. How they've been given so much money to make one of the most expensive movies of all time is beyond me and the lack of quality control within Netflix is concerning to say the least. A movie that cost this much money should not be so boring and aimless.

It's fine and serviceable, but I've already forgotten what I've watched and that's a problem. Everything in this movie has been done before in vastly superior ways, with not a single aspect of it standing out positively compared to its peers. It's media to consume, to pad a catalogue of content, rather than something with anything noteworthy to say. It's so fun seeing his style of adventure film in an animated format and you can tell he had a lot of fun working in this medium without losing his usual blockbuster flair. There's a couple transitions and one takes that are insane and some of the best work he's done.

I checked this out because the director/film were mentioned in "The Studio" TV show and the premise sounded right up my street since I love comics but I didn't click with the film at all. I found it pretty dull with unlikeable/boring characters and the story in execution didn't interest me in the slightest, especially with how underdeveloped the central dynamic between the two main characters is.

It's a very tough movie to rate because I can tell it's not bad at all but when I'm so uninterested in it and the ending is that underwhelming then it's hard to rate it anything higher.

The hate for this movie is completely unwarranted. Outside of one silly sequence involving the nuke fridge and an overreliance on CGI, the movie is full of classic Indiana Jones moments and some of the best character interactions in the entire franchise. The alien mystery is a perfect change of pace and very fitting for the era the movie takes place in too, an era that they do a great job of recreating.

I also love how it adds more depth to Indy's relationship with Marion and the introduction of Mutt is a great follow-up to the father-son bond explored in The Last Crucade. I truly don't understand what problems people have with this movie that can't also be applied to the original three. It's not just a good movie, I think it's up there as maybe the best in the franchise.

I went into Sinners with high expectations due to the glowing reviews and I'm glad that the movie (mostly) lived up to my expectations. It's not without its flaws and I think the strength of Coogler's direction massively elevates a script that could have used another rewrite, but from start to finish it is absolutely dripping with so much subtext and many themes explored to full effect, turning what could have been a conventional vampire romp into a fascinating exploration on culture and the power of art.

There's so much you can praise about this movie. Michael B. Jordan gives a career best performance and the rest of the cast rise to his level. Coogler's direction is second to none with a "music through time" sequence that gave me chills and is easily one of the greatest scenes I've ever seen in any movie. The cinematography is the best of all Coogler's movies too and I'm jealous of anyone who got to see it in 70MM IMAX. Ludwig's score is insane as to be expected, and despite some flaws in the script there's so many great lines especially ones paired with Hailee Steinfeld's delivery.

Overall Sinners is one of the best and most unique horrors I've ever seen, a brilliant reinvention of the vampire subgenre and a great fucking time at the cinema. Thank you to Coogler for coming up with this movie and shoutout to Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy for giving him practically a blank cheque to make it, a move which may have just saved them their jobs.

Why don't Sony actually try and make a good movie? Are they stupid? Kraven is far too long for a story that has very little happen and wastes too much time on backstory before we even get to see him in the present. Week 16

IMAX Early Screening

What the movie Dunkirk was for WWII is what Warfare is for contemporary war. It's an intimate perspective into the lives of multiple soldiers across a short period of time, but whereas Dunkirk ended with a feeling of unity and patriotism against all odds, Warfare has nothing positive to say. It's as anti-war as a war film could possibly be, with a sense of dread that never stops and a moment so shocking it genuinely made me think I was having a heart attack for a second.

What I love most about this movie is that there are no character arcs or even a story. It's just regular people with their own dynamics and flaws as they try and survive a desperate situation. There's mistakes made along the way and multiple characters have their sanity tested as the situation gets more and more hopeless. I cared about every main characger just because of how ordinary these guys are, there's some really stupid shit they do when things are quiet which makes them a joy to watch and those moments elevate the movie when shit quickly hits the fan.

Overall this is a great movie that had my heart racing and had me on the edge of my seat hoping they would all make it out alive. While you know from the start that it's based on a true story, ending the film with the actors next to the real soldiers (many faces blurred due to active duty) really rides home that this is the brutal realirt of war away from the blockbuster spectacle.

A Silent Voice is a tough movie to review because what it does right it does so right with some really strong moments, but I also think it struggles to explore its themes fully and gets bogged down by having too many characters and odd pacing that means the core relationship doesn't feel as intimate or as fleshed out as it should be.

I was so sure from the first act that this movie was gonna break me and have me emotional by the time the credits rolled but in the end it just didn't click with me the way I thought it would unfortunately. Something was missing to push it to the next level and as a comparison Your Name accomplished so much more in almost 20 minutes less while hitting every emotional and thematic beat to full effect. I think a rewatch could make me see it in a different light but for now it's a good movie that I would have seen as a great one if it did a couple things differently.

If you think about the premise for more than a second it falls apart but I can't deny I really enjoyed this movie. It does such a good job of keeping you entertained whether that be because of the quirky characters or the tense scenarios the protagonist gets put through. It has some great visual flair too that helps keep the location interesting.

I was worried the big reveal would bring the movie down but thankfully it didn't go in the direction I feared it would, although the stakes escalate a little too much for my liking with an over the top third act. That said its a fun movie throughout, kept me hooked wanting to know who was behind it all and I thought the ending was surprisingly sweet so it was absolutely worth a watch.

Saw that the workprint leaked online so thought I'd check it out. I can't lie the unfinished effects actually added to the experience and sometimes it was a struggle to tell what was unfinished and what was intentionally meant to look so hideous. It's a bad movie overall but I did enjoy it, it kinda knows it is and owns it in a good way? It's full of memes, some of which I know and many which I assume went completely over my head, and they're all terrible in ways that will no doubt go viral. The cast all have a lot of fun hamming it up and have surprisingly good chemistry together too with Jack Black proving once again to be the king of family entertainment.

You know what I'm really glad this movie got made and that it's doing well at the box office because cinemas right now desperately needed a smash hit like this (yes I understand the irony of that statement when I've just watched a pirated, unfinished copy of the film at home). It's on track to gross a billion dollars and so many young kids and teens are going to the cinema and having fun there because of this movie. It wears its influence strong but unfortunately doesn't really do enough to take advantage of that, neither as scary as it could be or as funny as it thinks it is. The central bond between the two lead characters never felt as fully developed as it could have been and the plot wasn't all that compelling. Treasure Planet is such a gem of a movie that never got the appreciation it deserved on release. I'm glad that over the years it's become a cult classic because it has so much going for it, and in a time when AI is pushing talented creators out of jobs this is a movie with such stellar visuals and animation that highlights how the human touch can never be beaten.

I do wish the central bond between Jim and Silver wasn't so rushed, I could have done with some more meaningful moments before the montage that solidified the strength of their father-son relationship but that scene itself did a good job of doing it in a tight runtime. More time spent both on the ship before they arrive on the planet as well as exploring the planet itself would have been great too but again the short runtime had their hands tied unfortunately. Overall it's a good movie that could have been a great one with a bit more time to flesh things out and it's infuriating that Disney insist on remaking their classics instead of movies like this that warrant both a longer runtime and the exposure.
