Every choice, every mission, has all led to this.

If you haven't heard - if you haven't, you must be living under a rock - Tom Cruise is on his way to save cinemas yet again with the latest Mission: Impossible instalment. The eighth film of the franchise that has, rather surprisingly, grown from strength to strength, The Final Reckoning brings the franchise to an end with incredibly mixed results.

Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and the IMF team race across the world and against time to find the Entity, a rogue artificial intelligence that can destroy mankind.

First off, if you thought they said "entity" a lot in Dead Reckoning, get ready for it to become the bane of your life while sitting through this film. Clocking in at just under three hours, The Final Reckoning gets off to a sluggish start with a first hour that becomes a bit of a slog to sit through - constant callbacks to the franchise's history complete with brief flashbacks to EVERY SINGLE ONE stopping the film from picking up any pace and really getting going. We are eight films into a franchise, most people know who or what you are referring to - it really does feel so jarring. It's a shame because there is some good stuff to open the film, including a well-executed emotional moment between two mainstays of the franchise. It really does make the choice to overload the first act with nostalgia quite baffling and something these films has never done to this extent.

Constantly ramming references down your throat becomes a thing of the past as the middle of the film really starts to pick up the pace, feeling more like a Mission: Impossible film as a result. The ridiculousness of it all is felt and the fact the world is reliant on Ethan Hunt yet again is enough to make you want to punch the air. It's also when the action kicks into gear and delivers on its promise of making this a partly spectacular end to the franchise.

Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise have now made four of these films together and, with each one, have delivered a varying array of death-defying stunts that put you right on the edge of your seat. Usually frantic, they mix things up a bit in the middle of the film here as Ethan takes to the depths to retrieve something vital from the sunken Sevastopol. It's a set-piece that takes its time to crank up the tension, ensuring the audience holds their breath as long as Ethan does. Then comes the final act, which genuinely saves the film, as Ethan and the villainous Gabriel take to the skies in a bi-plane chase for the ages. Not only that, Ethan then hangs from either plane while attempting to save the world - a true testament to the work that stunt crews do on film sets to ensure everyone's safety is paramount. It really is exhilarating stuff combined with true Mission: Impossible stakes as the rest of the team are on ground level testing your nerves too.

The Mission: Impossible films would be nothing without the dedication Tom Cruise has to the role and his love of cinema - nearly thirty years since he first lit the fuse. Once again as Ethan Hunt he delivers a performance full of determination and physicality that you can only sit back and ire the effort he puts in. Cruise has always had an underrated comedic side and he brings that to Ethan yet again, even if the stakes are higher than ever before. The ing cast are a joy as always but this time round feel more shoved to the side, with a whole host of new faces introduced in what becomes a bit of a bloated narrative. It was disappointing to see Esai Morales underused as Gabriel, his moustache-twirling presence always lifting the film to those more ridiculous heights - though it is great to see him get one of the most shocking moments in the whole franchise.

So, eight films later, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning sees one of the most iconic action franchises come to an end. After a disappointing start, things pick up for this to deliver some stunning action sequences and signature white-knuckle world-saving scenarios. Whether they choose to carry on the franchise somewhere down the line is anyone's guess however, making a Mission: Impossible film without Tom Cruise is a mission absolutely nobody should accept.

Initial reaction

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning left me disappointed. The opening hour is a bit of a slog as heavy exposition on the history of the franchise gets in the way of the story moving forward at any pace. Once it picks up halfway through, the film is truly saved by a nail-biting final act that proves Tom Cruise is undefeated when it comes to death defying stunts.

No law. Only disorder.

It feels rather unfortunate that a new action film from the director of The Raid films is arriving on Netflix this week with little to no fanfare. Havoc from Gareth Evans may not reach the heights of the aforementioned films, yet it does do exactly what it says on the tin, deliver total havoc.

After a drug deal gone wrong, bruised detective Walker Mackey (Tom Hardy) must fight his way through the criminal underworld to rescue a politician's estranged son, unravelling a deep web of corruption and conspiracy that ensnares his entire city.

Havoc opens with a frantic car chase as cops go after a lorry full of drugs. It may seem like a cool way to start a film however, the garish use of CGI makes it feel right out of a computer game, totally foreshadowing the absurdity of what is to come. The action comes thick and fast after that, Evans doing the lord's work again when it comes to hand to hand combat, where the film is at its absolute best. There's an insane sequence in a nightclub that you just have to take in because it's a hell of a lot, the close quarters fighting something to really get the adrenaline going.

It's a real shame though that the majority of the action is over-reliant on gunfire, some scenes just verging on noise as a result. Maybe it's because it's set in America that everyone is so trigger happy but it actually dilutes some of the otherwise thrilling action sequences. The club sequence previously mentioned is tarnished by all the loud gunfire but a sequence towards the end in a cabin is next level use of loud noises that become jarring. Pair that with an incredibly basic script and Havoc falters a little. Now, I know dialogue isn't what people are here to see with this film but at least make it sound like these characters are up against it and not just coasting through such insane situations.

As for the performances, Tom Hardy leads the film with a grizzled turn as Walker Mackey - his classic mumbling nearly out in full force but luckily stamped out early on in the film. The physicality of the role is not to be underestimated and Hardy plays it perfectly as expected, his sense of comedy something that also works well for the character. The only other performance of note in the film is Jessie Mei Li as Ellie, a rookie cop paired with Walker on his case. Not only is her character one of the more interesting in the film, the journey from innocent rookie to someone willing to play dirty to get results brings out a fine performance in Li.

Sadly, Havoc never reaches the heights of either of The Raid films, lacking in any iconic sequences that made people fall in love with them. Gareth Evans though proves he is one of the best directors working in action today, so I will be seated for whatever he brings us next.

Initial reaction

Havoc does exactly what it says on the tin, Gareth Evans delivering a brutal and blistering action movie in the process. At its most impressive when delivering insane hand to hand combat, the nightclub sequence the standout, there's sadly far too much reliance on gunfire throughout, verging on becoming just noise at times. Had fun with it but it doesn't reach the heights of either of The Raid films.

Not super. Not heroes. Not giving up.

Now more than ever, it feels as if the MCU is at a critical point to keep people invested in the juggernaut of a franchise that once soared so high. It will always keep a loyal legion of fans but there's no denying there's been a lull in interest with particular films releasing to such meagre numbers the franchise is used to. The Multiverse Saga has been accused of lacking direction compared to the Infinity Saga, yet that all feels like it could change with the release of Thunderbolts*.

Ensnared in a death trap, an unconventional team of antiheroes -- Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) and John Walker (Wyatt Russell) -- embarks on a dangerous mission that forces them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts.

This isn't the first time we've seen a bunch of misfits formed into something of a team in the MCU, James Gunn endearing the world to the Guardians of the Galaxy over the course of their own trilogy. It's a winning formula, seeing a team struggle to fit together before coming good, but Thunderbolts* isn't afraid to change the formula a little to become one of the most fascinating MCU projects in recent memory. Opening with a daring stunt performed by Florence Pugh's Yelena - jumping off the second tallest building in the world - we are thrown right into the action, and things move very swiftly from that point. There's moments of slick action scattered throughout as the team come to blows a number of times, yet it's an impressive finale that really makes the film stand out. If you're expecting a city destroying fight to save the world, you'll be disappointed. What Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo write into the finale is much darker and thoughtful than that, and it comes with the bonus of Bucky punching a man in a chicken suit.

Yes, you read that right. Thunderbolts* isn't afraid to be goofy but it should be lauded for wearing its heart on its sleeve. These are broken characters banded together, each with dark pasts that plague their present selves, and the reflection on mental health and battling inner demons makes for an emotionally resonant conclusion centred around Lewis Pullman's Sentry, who makes for such an interesting antagonist. As mentioned, it's not afraid to be goofy as well and director Jake Schreier balances both the comedic and emotional aspects irably. Personally, the film gets off to a wobbly start in of the comedy but it grew stronger as events unfold, not surprising that happens to be as the team gains more , so maybe it's an intentional choice to symbolise the team having to gel.

The greatest strength of Thunderbolts* is the performances from the impressive cast assembled, Florence Pugh front and centre with a fantastic performance as Yelena. Still not over the loss of Natasha and very much trying to find her way in life, Pugh brings such vulnerability to the character, a scene between her and David Harbour's Red Guardian later in the film emotionally poignant. Pugh is the beating heart of the film and someone they need to keep around in the MCU for as long as possible, she's just that good. Sebastian Stan is effortlessly cool as Bucky Barnes - epitomised by him channeling Arnold Schwarzenegger in T2 on a motorbike - and it's fun to watch him try to rein the team in to help stop the threat.

It's very much an ensemble piece full of fun performances, the likes of Hannah John-Kamen returning to roles after a while away and fitting in seamlessly. David Harbour totally understands the assignment as Red Guardian, getting most of the laughs as a result, while it's Wyatt Russell as John Walker who feels the least settled into the role at this point. Lewis Pullman makes for an interesting new addition to the universe, his Bob and later Sentry plagued by amnesia and a troubled past that results in almost catastrophic events. Pullman's performance allows the audience to feel great empathy for a man who never chose to be what they made him.

It's fun to see them put some effort into a post credit scene for once too as it becomes clearer where the MCU is heading, the second in particular one you do not want to miss. Also, the discovery of what the asterisk in the title means isn't exactly mind-blowing but it is most definitely satisfying for the future of the franchise. Thunderbolts* is the better of the MCU films released so far this year, its depiction of mental health struggles within these antiheroes and the performances on show the strongest assets.

Initial reaction

Thunderbolts* isn't afraid to change the formula of the superhero film, and in doing so becomes one of the most fascinating MCU projects in recent memory. It makes a bold statement to tackle heavy subject matters, dealing with inner demons in particular and, after a wobbly start, comes together as a new team is formed. Florence Pugh is the beating heart of it all and is someone the MCU needs to keep around for years to come. It really grew on me as it went on.

In 1987, Oakland was hella freaky.

It's always a nice surprise when you can just vibe with a film, something that very much happened with Freaky Tales. The latest offering from indie filmmaking duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, this action comedy leans into both its own absurdity and influences from other films to become one of the most entertaining films of the year so far.

An NBA star (Jay Ellis), a corrupt cop (Ben Mendelsohn), a female rap duo (Normani and Dominique Thorne), teenage punks, neo-Nazis and a debt collector (Pedro Pascal) embark on a collision course in 1987 Oakland, Calif.

If the synopsis above doesn't at least make you the tiniest bit interested in seeing how this plays out, then it definitely won't do anything for you. What Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck achieve here in creating such an authentic - outside of all the weird shit - 80s vibe is nothing short of mesmerising. It's a film almost paying homage to a time itself, as well as the countless influences that inspire the narrative - something this film irably wears on its sleeve. The visuals are grainy and feel like an exploitation film while the soundtrack is full of bangers that bring the era to life with such energy.

Their writing is also an aspect of the film that shines, the vignette structure working well to connect the respective stories throughout. You might argue it isn't necessary but Boden and Fleck utilise it to their advantage, with the film flowing more naturally as a result. For an action comedy, it mostly delivers on both however, it's more subtle with the laughs than you'd think and the major action bookends the film. The finale in particular the most obvious Kill Bill homage we've seen in a while.

As for the performances, this is very much an ensemble piece that relies on many moving parts to achieve success. The most obvious standouts are Pedro Pascal and Ben Mendelsohn, himself a regular fixture in the duo's films, both getting the most to do but so different ends of the scale when it comes to calmness. Pascal oozes charisma every time he's on screen while Mendelsohn just captures that nasty nature of his character in the way only he can. The rest of the cast are clearly having a blast with the material, which is always a good sign for any film.

Having heard nothing about Freaky Tales prior to watching it, it's such a good feeling when a film comes along and just provides you with such a fun time. Who doesn't like watching Nazis get their comeuppance!?

It's simple, I hear For Who the Bell Tolls, I really like the film.

You say you want a revolution?

My wife chose this as it's Mother's Day and it's a film she used to watch so much as a child. She warned me about what I was about to witness and even I couldn't have predicted the chaotic events that were to unfold in front of my very eyes. Let's be honest, the Spice Girls were huge and genuinely have some of the greatest pop songs ever released to their name, so it's not crazy to see why a film starring them was released at the peak of their popularity. Some of this made no sense but that only added to the enjoyment factor of it all, Richard E. Grant going totally unhinged something to alos keep the interest going. Lost count of the various ing roles throughout - Meat Loaf(?) and Roger Moore (!?!) - but you get why they're in it of course. Then there's the Spice Girls themselves. Not one of them is an actor and quite honestly, watching them was like being back at school in a drama lesson when you had to perform to the rest of the class.

Human traffickers beware.

Whenever a new Jason Statham action movie comes out, there's always one particular thing I look out for; what occupation he will have before getting into all sorts of violent shenanigans. when he was actually a beekeeper in The Beekeeper? I mean, nothing will ever top that for me but in A Working Man, his journey from construction worker to a war against the Russian mafia is just as ludicrous.

Levon Cade (Jason Statham) left behind a decorated military career in the black ops to live a simple life of working construction. However, when human traffickers kidnap his boss's daughter, his search to bring her home uncovers a world of corruption far greater than he ever could have imagined.

Working with David Ayer again after The Beekeeper, which was surprisingly rather good, it's so disappointing to see A Working Man be an uninspired action movie helmed by Ayer. After a bad run of films, it was great to see Ayer have some fun with his previous film but this is just a reminder that, more often than not, he delivers quite awful films. Co-written with Sylvester Stallone(!), the film is full of laughable dialogue that you actually get the impression from they feel they were writing some deep piece of cinema here. Let's not even talk about the most one-note stereotypical characters littered throughout the film because not one is even worth mentioning.

Now, dont get me wrong, people will be watching this to see Statham kill a load of people for two hours. Sure, it delivers that however, it's just in such mundane fashion. There's a few moments where brutal violence matched with comedy really do work but, for the most part, the action is cut to crap in the editing room with the camera far too close to the action sometimes. It gets to the point where it's all just noise.

As for Jason Statham, this is the kind of role he can do with his eyes closed. It's a testament to the physicality he brings to the film, yet any form of emotion he is suppose to evoke is thrown out the window by the lack of dramatic tones he can deliver. Statham is a weird one because, sometimes you may watch a film of his and think it's easy to see how he became a big action star however, films like this just make you think how that was even possible in the first place. Seriously, this just isn't it.

Obviously this film ends in a way to bait a sequel but it'll be a surprise if that actually happens. The Beekeeper deserves a sequel. This does not. Action movies deserve to be better than this.

You're cordially invited to a violently romantic comedy.

Jimmy Warden makes his directorial debut with Borderline, a comedy thriller that promises a game of cat and mouse amidst a home invasion scenario, yet delivers far more than you'd expect. This twisted little indie thriller certainly surprised me.

Duerson (Ray Nicholson), a helplessly romantic sociopath escapes from a mental institution and invades the home of Sofia (Samara Weaving), a '90s pop superstar. He just wants to be loved; she just wants to survive.

The marketing and synopsis for Borderline will have you believe this is very much a two person show set, for the majority, in one location. While that would have been fun to watch, what Warden does with his film is thankfully something a little more quirky and, as a result, far more interesting. There's way more characters in play than expected and they all intertwine throughout, culminating in a rather bizarre finale that treads a fine line but just managed to keep me invested.

This day and age, dealing with a subject such as mental health in your film needs a careful approach, and Warden does a decent job in making Duerson feel like a rounded character rather than just an outright caricature. By the end of the film, it's clear as day that Duerson is as much a danger to himself than he is others, the end credits hitting rather hard in particular. The music from the Mondo Boys works so well with the tone of it all, persisting with the offbeat tone the film carries with it throughout.

The performances on show add to the quirky nature of the film, Ray Nicholson in particular inheriting the signature smile from his father to bring about a sense of unease to proceedings. This is the second time we've seen him with a bit of an unnerving smile aimed at a famous popstar so he better avoid getting typecast moving forward. Samara Weaving is always choosing such interesting projects and, while she may not have the most to do here, her screen presence and fine comedic timing sees her add undeniable quality to the film. The MVP though is Alba Baptista as Penny, a fellow escapee who aids Duerson in the home invasion - her desire to bring such pain to various characters throughout both entertain and disturbing in equal measure.

Borderline feels like it could easily become a cult classic, Jimmy Warden delivering a film that, with a little refining, could easily be a surprise hit. If you're looking for a film to this week, make it this quirky indie thriller.
