Such a timeless classic. This is a true landmark of cinema, and it deserves to be!

And, upon rewatch, I have to say it’s climbing my list as one of my all time favorites!

20th anniversary of release day, so even though I saw it in theaters less than a month ago, I had to watch it again tonight.

I’ve always really enjoyed this one, but with every rewatch I feel like it climbs higher up my list of Star Wars films.

I truly LOVE Ewan McGregor’s portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi, it makes me wish we got a 2nd season of the show every time.

This is a far from perfect film, but it fits into the category of “I love it so much that I simply don’t care” for me.

At 27 years old, I’ve picked up Star Wars and I can’t seem to put it down. I understand that it’s not perfect, but I honestly think it’s mostly pretty solid so far. I’ve really come to believe the saying “No one hates Star Wars more than Star Wars fans.”

Considering the fact they never planned on making a “film” this is actually pretty solid. I didn’t grow up with Star Wars, so all of this expanded universe lore is new to me, and so far I’ve been pretty impressed.

So far, every Clone Wars property I’ve seen has given so much more life to Anakin. The prequels barely scrape the surface of all of the complexities of such a huge character, but they make up for that here.

I can’t wait to see more of Anakin and Ashoka’s many adventures in the show!

I love the idea of the Death Star being built by a man who didn’t want to do it, so he proceeded to give the ultimate middle finger to the Empire by making it so “easy” to blow up.

From a special effects standpoint, this movie is absolutely amazing. (Besides whatever they did with Tarkin and Leia, that was ROUGH) All of the battles are gorgeous to look at.

However, in my opinion, almost ALL of the characters in this film fall flat. It’s difficult to watch this movie by itself, and truly get invested into any of the characters outside of Jyn. It almost gave off the vibes that “we know all of these people are gonna die, so don’t worry about fleshing them out a ton.” That was disappointing.

This film does contain probably the most badass 30 seconds of Vader we’ve ever gotten, and it gets bonus points just for that.

I still have to see TLJ and RoS, so who knows where this will go, but Disney really started their Star Wars films off with a bang. This and Force Awakens were very promising.

When the Jedi council finally decided to do SOMETHING, I almost cheered. After two movies of them just sitting in rooms and talking, thank goodness for some action!

In my opinion, this entry suffers the most from Lucas dialogue. The romantic scenes are cringy and unnatural. I want to blame the actors and their performances, but honestly how can someone be expected to turn THIS script into a work of art?!

When you watch episode 3, it’s clear that is the story Lucas wanted to tell the whole time. This entire film, with a pretty bloated runtime I might add, fills like filler to get to the next one.

There’s barely a single memorable scene here. Bottom tier Star Wars to me.

Every time I rewatch this film, I dislike it less and less. However, that still doesn’t mean I’m a fan.

This film is plagued by some pretty bad performances, along with some awful dialogue.
Everyone in this movie (besides Jar Jar) is very one note and doesn’t provide much emotion at all.

Darth Maul is a badass villain and it’s easy to see why he got resurrected in so many expanded universes. Duel of the Fates is one of the best Star Wars songs period. The pod race sequence is quite thrilling as well.

It’s fair to say this was the first BAD Star Wars movie we ever got, and Episode 2 didn’t help matters much either.

It has its moments, but they struggle to outweigh some of the glaring flaws for me. And oh yes, the CGI is ROUGH.

Forget the prequels, this is some of the best Star Wars period.

It’s quite incredible how much weight they added to so many of these characters through this show. Mace Windu and Grievous get some truly great moments that enhance everything about them.
Anakin and Ventress have one of the best lightsaber battles of the entire saga, and it really showcases the anger that is building up inside of Anakin at this time during the war.

The animation style is great, voice work is all top notch, and as I’ve already said, we get a few of the best Star Wars action scenes I’ve ever laid eyes on.

It’s barely over 2 hours. If you’re a fan of the prequels, or honestly even if you’re not, this is worth a watch. So damn good.

A very enjoyable making-of documentary of a series that I personally loved. Disney has done some questionable things with Star Wars, but in my opinion this show was one of the best projects they’ve given us.

The reason I haven’t watched any movies in a while is because my wife and I have been binging The Righteous Gemstones and Vice Principals. I highly recommend them both, Danny McBride and Walton Goggins are a fantastic duo! Now onto my review.

I’m 27 years old and I have no idea how I have never seen a single JP film. This absolutely lives up to the hype!

The performances are all great across the board for me. The animatronic dinosaurs are works of art that look so realistic, especially for 1993 but even today.

Richard Attenborough is the standout for me. His intentions were truly good and his plan just didn’t work out. Phenomenal performance.

So yes, as all of you know it’s a classic and it’s for good reason. This was so much fun.

The first two films were good movies, but this is one of my absolute favorites.

The biggest improvement they made here was making the scenes in the office just as riveting as the action set pieces.

Matt Damon IS Jason Bourne. The man is one of my favorite actors, and this will most likely always be my favorite role of his. Joan Allen is excellent. David Strathairn, who I have never seen in anything other than very small roles, turns in a great performance as the main antagonist.

I’m not a fan of shaky cam, but something about the way Greengrass does it makes it acceptable for me. In my opinion, this entry easily has the best action scenes of the saga.

Possibly the biggest strength of this movie is its pace. It is wide open from the opening scene right until the end, and I ire them for not stretching out the runtime 20 extra just because it was the last movie. (Or so we thought)

The score is also great, but the soundtrack is phenomenal. Every single time I watch that final scene and Extreme Ways starts playing, I get goosebumps.

I have to it, I really thought this film was much more beloved than it turned out to be. But for me, it’s always been one of my absolute favorite action movies.

“Jesus Christ. That’s Jason Bourne.”
yes, I’m aware that’s become a meme now but I still love that line.

Even though there’s only two of these, the formula of building up to Ben’s huge line stating whatever crazy shit he’s going to do really does work quite well.

Cage is once again, as always, awesome here. Jon Voight and Helen Mirren have a cute love/hate relationship. Sadly, Ed Harris wasn’t given enough to work with to be as good of a villain as Sean Bean.

It’s not as good as the first, but it’s still a pretty good time. Definitely worth a watch.

One last thing. Ed Harris’s character goes through quite literally the fastest redemption arc I’ve ever seen in this movie. Within two minutes of screen time, he goes from holding a knife to someone’s throat to make sure he escapes, to sacrificing himself to save everyone. My wife and I were both cackling at that part😂

With a franchise this big, it’s virtually impossible to not have heard by now that this trilogy was disappointing. But this was so much fun, and is honestly probably my favorite besides the originals. (Yes, including ROTS)

The wooden dialogue and blue screen rooms that plagued the prequels are nowhere to be found. It takes very similar beats to the originals, but the new characters we get are all so great and endearing that I can almost excuse it under the guise of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

It’s also very well paced. About 20 minutes in it gets going and seemingly never stops until the credits roll, and that’s hard to do with a 140 minute runtime.

I’m not sure what my opinion on episodes 8 & 9 will be, but this is a damn good Star Wars film.

It’s been quite a while since I went 5 days without watching a movie, but we back!

Normally when I give a film a rating this low, I didn’t like it. In the case of this one, it was exactly what I was looking for. A forgettable early 2000s horror movie filled from top to bottom with all the cliches and tropes.

The positives are the premise, it’s ittedly pretty solid, despite the fact it’s been done before. (It helps that the characters directly reference Deliverance) Another positive is the makeup work on our antagonists, they look pretty damn gnarly! Also, a couple of the kills are decent. (The one pictured in my backdrop being the best)

The negatives are all pretty predictable. The acting isn’t great, the script isn’t either, and the characters are unbelievably stupid.
Why in the hell would you not IMMEDIATELY leave that house after seeing all of that horrific stuff inside? 😂
There’s also no shortage of false scares.

I asked my wife a very important question that caused both of us to laugh our asses off.
“Why, after breaking into someone’s house that is filled with horrific things, would our main character pick up the ladle in the pot on the stove to see what the soup looks like? Was he going to fix himself a plate and sit down for a meal?”

My rambling aside, sometimes this is exactly the movie I’m in the mood to watch. For that reason, I had a pretty good time with this “bad” movie.

“I’ll kill him, I’ll kill him!”
“You don’t really mean you’ll kill me do you?”

I saw someone say that every single person who was involved with this film deserves an honorary Oscar and, yes. They absolutely do.

Obviously there may be some films I’m not thinking of, but I think it’s a fairly safe bet to say this is the greatest directorial debut ever made. Sidney Lumet creates so much suspense, and all he has to use is the camera positioning along with the actors positioning. The idea of beginning the film as the case ends so that we learn all of the details through our characters’ conversations is genius.

Everyone in this cast is so great I almost feel the need to acknowledge them all by name, but Henry Fonda and Lee J. Cobb give truly incredible performances. The way we learn so much about each of these characters in a runtime of just 97 minutes is unbelievable.

Without question, one of the best movies ever made. Perfect acting, directing, and writing.

For me, this was a mixed bag but the good does outweigh the bad.

This plot is something that doesn’t take much convincing for me. 81 minute thriller locked down to a phone booth? I’m in. It’s a great premise.

Colin Farrell and Keifer Sutherland have a back and forth in this phone booth that is truly brilliant at times. They both give great performances, as well as Forest Whitaker who is also very solid in the film.

A few CGI elements that were just bad ideas to begin with do make appearances, and there’s also a couple of scenes that seemed to be of a completely different tone from the rest of the film that I wasn’t a fan of.

Overall, it’s a fun contained thriller with a couple of really good performances. Not great, but a decent time.

And we finish the original trilogy with yet another GREAT movie!

We see the completion of everyone’s arc in this film, and they all wrap up quite beautifully. Vader is able to finally “bring balance” as he was prophesied to do so long ago. Luke has become not only a Jedi, but a true hero. Han and Leia have finally leaned all the way into everyone’s favorite movie romance. All of these story elements really do come together very well, but the film really hits a snag when they reach Endor.

Nothing here is bad, it’s just subpar for this original trilogy. It doesn’t feel as weighty as the rest of the film has up to this point, and once Luke is with Vader, none of the flashbacks to Endor feel investing at all. I found myself only wanting to see Luke and Vader. That’s my only negative with the film, and I feel a bit picky even doing that.

Vader’s funeral is a beautiful scene, accompanied by that fantastic music. These characters really carry these films. So many big franchises have forgotten that great characters such as these are what make great films. Luke, Leia, Han, Yoda, Vader, The Emperor. All of these characters are iconic, absolutely burnt into our minds forever.

BRAVO TO EVERYONE INVOLVED!

So wraps up another great movie, and a great close to one of the best trilogies of all time!

And that’s the end of my journey as a 27 year old first time viewer of the original Star Wars trilogy! It’s definitely been fun, and this is absolutely one of the best trilogies I’ve ever seen. This is honestly a perfect film. There isn’t a thing to nitpick here. Every performance is great. All of the cinematography was so gorgeous, and absolutely breathtaking for essentially the last 20 minutes.

A pretty good dark comedy.

Robert Pattinson is obviously the main attraction here, and he doesn’t disappoint. He gives a performance that, for much of the movie, is rather unforgiving and pulls it off with flying colors. He is truly one of the greats we have working today, and an absolute chameleon no matter the role. If Sebastian Stan got nominated for his portrayal of Trump, Mark Ruffalo deserves one as well. He was hysterical in most of his scenes. Toni Collette is also quite hilarious here.

It’s got a reported budget of $118 million, and you can see all of that money in every frame. The sets they’ve created are great, and the cinematography is top notch.

I feel like this may be a 4 once I’ve rewatched it, but on first viewing I’m going to stick with this. It’s always difficult for any director to make their next film after their Oscar winner, but this is a very solid follow up from Bong Joon Ho.

To all of my Letterboxd friends that won’t believe it, yes, it’s true. I have never seen the original trilogy. The time has finally come to right this huge wrong in my cinema journey!

Star Wars (not “A New Hope” despite George Lucas really wishing he could change the title) is as great as I’ve always heard it was. It truly does live up to the hype.

Virtually every scene in this film is so iconic that I felt as if I had already seen them before, yet they were still fantastic. I mean we’re talking about a film that is approaching FIFTY years old, and I can still walk into the toy aisle in Walmart and buy a Luke Skywalker or Han Solo action figure. That is a different level of influence.

The talent on display here is hard to even describe. Barely a single frame in the movie looks dated, it’s all so believable.

I could ramble on about each and every iconic thing this film holds, but instead I’ll just name a few.
-John Williams all time great score
-Probably the most famous villain EVER
-the Death Star explosion (EPIC)
-the twin suns of Tatooine shot

It’s very easy to see why this film birthed the biggest film franchise we’ve ever seen. Truly an all-time great, and the best part was seeing it for the first time with my wife. She loves them and we had so much fun!

Now, onto Empire Strikes Back!

P.S. I watched the special edition because it’s all that’s available through Disney+ and I have no idea why George Lucas would want to go back in and add things to the perfect film he made.

This is only my second watch, and my first was at least 7 years ago. I was 20, and finding any film I could that was considered a classic at the time. And I have to it, I didn’t like it at all. I wasn’t at a point that I could understand the film yet, so it came off as just boring back then. Obviously, my opinion has completely changed 7 years later.

Scorsese and De Niro is an all time great duo, they may even be THE duo in all of film. These guys just make magic together.

De Niro gives an incredible performance. He does a great job at making you sympathetic to him, despite the fact that he clearly isn’t okay. Scorsese does a great job of making NYC essentially the 2nd biggest character in this film. You understand why Travis is upset, even if you can’t sympathize with how he handles it.

This is a classic film, with an all time great performance and the first GREAT Martin Scorsese movie. One of the best independent films ever made.

I’ll never forgive Sony for what they did to Sam Raimi with this film.

This film is littered with bad ideas, with a few pretty decent fight scenes in between.

Venom was so obviously a studio demand that was shoehorned in at the last minute. Harry’s memory loss idea is laughable. Why did Bernard wait this long to tell Harry how his father died? 😂 I have so many questions.

Also, there is some quite awful (even by 2007 standards) CGI. The first chase scene with Harry and Peter looked so rough.

I love the first two, but this one has always been disappointing. As I said, it has it’s entertaining moments, but they can’t overcome its bad ideas.

“Hey Benji, we’re in first class.”
“Yeah but we fucking earned it.”

This film shows that with great writing, acting, and direction, a movie with a fairly simple premise can become truly fantastic.

Jesse Eisenberg’s direction is excellent. His writing is even better. This is one of those rare screenplays that truly does feel REAL. (No pun intended) Every conversation feels so authentic and filled with backstory. Also, this is a real dramedy. It balances the two tones very well, with a couple of pretty hilarious moments.

Kieran Culkin absolutely EARNED his Oscar. Everyone is very good in this film, but he feels a step above them for the entire runtime. He’s hilarious, while also being truly tragic, and he balances both of these emotions beautifully.

Eisenberg’s choice to have Chopin playing throughout essentially the entire movie was great. It truly gives the sense of being along on this tour with the characters.

This was a damn good movie, featuring a fantastic performance that won’t be soon forgotten. Well done to everyone involved!

At 27 years old, I finally watched The Oscars for the first time.

Anora stole the night, and while it’s not a film I’m interested in, I absolutely loved Sean Baker’s speech about the theatrical experience and independent films! PEOPLE HAVE TO GO SEE MOVIES IN THE THEATER, IT IS A TRULY MAGICAL PLACE.

I haven’t seen Wicked, so my opinion on this isn’t completely valid, but I struggle to comprehend that Nosferatu didn’t win for Costume or Production Design. It deserved at least one of those.

I was happy to see Dune Part Two win for Sound and Visual Effects, but it could’ve won quite a few more. Also, how in the world was Denis Villeneuve not at least nominated for Best Director?

I was also happy that Emilia Perez didn’t sweep the night, because based solely off of what my small Letterboxd community thinks about that film, it shouldn’t have even been nominated for ANYTHING.

Conan was a pretty good host, and it was a fun Sunday night with my wife! Now I think it’s time for me to actually watch some of these winners!

My entire family has always loved this movie, but somehow it slipped through the cracks and I never saw it. After finally fixing that fact, I may of just found my favorite Harrison Ford film that isn’t Indiana Jones!

There are few films, if ANY, that are paced this well. 130 minutes felt like 95. I’d go as far as saying there isn’t a single scene or even moment that doesn’t feel absolutely necessary to the story. The first 15 minutes are editing perfection. To cram all that they do in that amount of time is truly astounding.

Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones are both perfect, and this may be my favorite performance from TLJ. My friend Rob pointed out in his review just how great all of the ing cast is, and he’s exactly right. There’s talent all over the screen throughout the entire runtime.

This is one of the best thrillers I’ve ever seen. If you somehow haven’t seen it, give it a shot. You won’t be disappointed.

Lastly, when people say “they don’t make them like they used to” this is one of the best examples. Huge stars, big budget, no IP in sight. What a sorely missed concept in today’s Hollywood.

The casting here has to be mentioned. It’s as good of a live-action Scooby Doo cast as you could ever hope to get. Everyone plays their character very similarly to the cartoon we all know and love.

The last Indy film we got to is one I’ve always enjoyed!

I appreciate the tight story. Fast paced from the very beginning. This is the shortest in the franchise, but it also might have the best pace to me.

Harrison Ford and Ke Huy Quan work brilliantly together, and you really buy their friendship and care for each other. However, I can’t stand Willie. My wife and I agree if she was written out, the movie could’ve been better. No disrespect to Kate Capshaw, it’s just an annoying useless character on the page.

All of the action scenes are all timers for the genre. The mine car chase, the bridge scene, the fight with the giant. Every one of them are so well done, and outside of a couple of shots, this movie holds up very well!

Not the best of them, but still a great entry! And by far the most violent of them all. (I love that)

The film is PG and listed as family/fantasy. That’s a very light way of saying this is an absolute drug trip of a movie. Personally, I loved it. All of the musical numbers as well as some of the characters gave the film so much levity.

Antoine Fuqua seems to be able to make a very entertaining movie, no matter what the subject matter. This is a perfect example of that.

Fantastic cast, great cinematography, and a couple of the best western action scenes in quite a while. Even though the runtime seems a bit excessive for this type of film, it’s so engaging from the beginning that you’re 45 minutes into it before you know it.

Denzel, is there anyone cooler? I mean really is there? Chris Pratt is his usual hilarious self. Ethan Hawke and Vincent D’onofrio also shine.

Do I think this is a modern classic? Not at all, but it’s very well done, and just insanely entertaining from beginning to end.

I appreciated getting the backstory in the opening credits, rather than getting another origin story. The Hulk action is well done and pretty entertaining. However, I really don’t know if there’s a single good performance from anyone in this film. It’s not that they’re bad, it’s just very forgettable across the board.

In the age of reboots, we’ve never had one for Indy. I firmly believe that’s because Harrison Ford is so perfect as this character. One day it may happen, and I feel bad for that actor. Some shoes are simply impossible to fill.

Spielberg’s direction is mesmerizing. The script is as air tight as any you’ll find. John Williams score is actual perfection.

I won’t sit here and act like I wasn’t at all entertained, but once you’ve seen the heights that this franchise has reached, this is obviously quite a step down.

Harrison Ford is once again great at this character, as well as Karen Allen reprising her role as Marion. I don’t hate Shia LaBeouf as an actor, but my goodness. Mutt feels like a completely tacked on character that doesn’t need to be in this movie at all, but instead he’s damn near the main protagonist.

I have no problem with Indy encountering aliens, but the design of the skull was laughable. It looks like a piece of plastic you could get at Party City or something.

Despite its flaws, at the end of the day this is a Steven Spielberg film with a score by John Williams. By the standards of big budget Hollywood action, I would say this is slightly above average. Sadly, by the standards of this franchise, this is a far cry from what we’re used to.

Lastly, I know this isn’t news to anyone, but Tarzan Mutt and nuking the fridge are ALL TIME bad ideas. It’s hard to believe a filmmaker like Spielberg did either of those things.

This film honestly met my exact expectations. It’s a good enough time, but not another classic Indiana Jones movie or anything. About as good of a sendoff as you could’ve had in my opinion.

The opening sequence with de-aged Harrison Ford is rather sad. I know it’s a new technology, but I’ve already seen de-aging done much better than this in other films. However, it is a thrilling sequence to open the film with!

Essentially, all of my enjoyment came from getting to see Harrison Ford play this character one last time. Mads Mikkelsen is great as usual.

I absolutely have to point out all three of the main performances. River Phoenix is brilliant in the opening sequence, Harrison Ford is once again perfect as this character, and Sean Connery is absolutely amazing here. This is my favorite work I’ve ever seen from him without question!

This is essentially filmmaking perfection. It really doesn’t feel like a single second is wasted here. Every scene is fantastic, no matter whether it’s an action set piece, or a dialogue heavy scene. Each and every one grips you and never lets go.

My wife loved No Way Home when I showed it to her a few weeks back, so I figured I’d show her another one of the Tom Holland films!

This film takes its time, and does drag a bit in a few spots upon rewatch. We don’t have to see another origin story, so that’s a plus already.

The dynamic between Peter and Tony, as well as the suit Tony has given him was really smart. All of their interactions were highlights, and they wisely kept them to a minimum.

Another great twist is Vulture being Liz’s father. That adds so much more depth to the character, and makes you completely understand his plight.

Tobey is once again great as Peter/Spider-Man. Alfred Molina is fantastic as Doc Ock. The performances impress all around in this movie.

To talk about this film without mentioning the train sequence would be a failure to me. It’s one of the best scenes in any comic book movie period in my opinion.

I think this movie is my earliest memory of being absolutely obsessed with a film. There’s no telling how many times I watched that VHS once my mom finally broke down and bought it for me. And I’m happy to report that 23 years later, I still love every second of it.

Tobey Maguire IS Spider-Man/Peter Parker to me. I love Garfield and Holland, but neither of them have played this character as great as Tobey in my opinion. Willem Dafoe, as usual, is still a standout. (Even if the suit looks a little bit like Power Rangers) Cliff Robertson is incredible in his limited screen time. J.K. Simmons is possibly top 10 casting choices I’ve ever seen. The man was so great in the role, they felt the need to bring him back in another universe instead of recasting the character.

As I watch Spider-Man swing around the city, I find it mind blowing that this movie is 23 years old. All of the action still looks great, and the final swinging scene still gives me goosebumps every time!

I’ll always love this film, as well as Spider-Man 2. And as far as GREAT superhero movies, this was the first Marvel was ever able to pull off!*

I’m fairly sure this is my 3rd time seeing this film counting theaters, and I have to it, I actually do enjoy a good bit of this movie.

From the standpoint of what I believe a Venom movie could be, this is disappointing. I believe there’s so much more there to be explored than this script allows. But, as a decently entertaining origin story with a super charismatic lead? That part works for me.

Tom Hardy is good, and his interplay with Venom  throughout the movie is definitely a highlight.
Riz Ahmed on the other hand, yikes. Not a good performance to me. To be fair, he didn’t have much to work with.

This movie is fine. It offers a couple of great performances, and a couple of pretty good scenes, but one word describes it for me: Forgettable

I wasn’t offended that I spent my time watching this, I genuinely enjoyed it. I just can’t see myself ever watching it again, there’s nothing absolutely amazing about it to me. And considering how much I love this sub genre of Organized Crime Drama, that’s pretty telling.

Depp is pretty damn good here. From all I’ve ever heard and read, he played this character as true to real life as anyone could. In my opinion, Joel Edgerton gives the best performance in the film. He really gives off the vibe that he believes this is what he should be doing, no matter how deep into this world he’s actually getting. The cast is absolutely stacked, but outside of those two, no one really stood out to me.

The story is good, but there’s basically zero emotional weight to any of it. I felt like I was just watching these events play out, rather than actually being invested in them.

Overall, I think this is a good movie. I would recommend it, but I can’t see anyone watching this and thinking it’s an organized crime classic. It’s fine and forgettable.
