]]>I hesitate to say this movie is good, but it's entertaining in an ugly way. Not sure how they conned these actors into a movie with this script, but more power to 'em, because the scenery chewing elevates things a lot.
]]>This review may contain spoilers.
Except for a couple places where it drags a bit, a very well done movie. Well acted, good gags, compelling progression, etc. But holy crap, the ending. Dude just ghosts his wife and kids, literally never to return. It was a splash of cold water to the face.

]]>Came into this one with zero knowledge or expectations, and it is a surprisingly mean and effective horror movie. There's almost no punch the movie isn't willing to throw. Totally worth watching for anyone working through either franchise.

]]>Me at the beginning: "Ooh, so many quirky and entertaining actors."
Me in the middle: "This is a decent action flick, not a bad watch."
Me at the main plot reveal/climax: <turns the TV off, throws the TV in the garbage, lights the garbage on fire, throws the flaming garbage onto the backyard, sells the property>

]]>Imagine they made the original Predator movie twice as long, and the entire second half was reusing almost exactly the same tricks you saw in the first half, except now the shock and scares are basically played out. That second half is basically Predator 2.
There are some decent performances (or at least moments) so it's not a complete dud. It's simply nothing to go out of your way for. The "voodoo" elements felt especially clunky, like they did something meaningful with it but then left 90% of that on the cutting room floor. If you want to watch an action movie and this one is available for free, go nuts.

]]>It ramps up the preposterone over the first Die Hard without going completely over the top. It's a good action movie, and every single scene has multiple instances of "Oh, it's THAT guy!" for the cast. The script and/or the acting are weaker than the first, to the point where it's distracting, but not enough to sink the movie.
]]>Not sure what I expected this movie to be, but it wasn't that at all. It's a solid cop movie, with some definite comic elements, but it didn't feel entirely like any one thing. Either way, it was a good watch and an entertaining film.
]]>A truly well done war movie. It shows action, it shows the downtime. It shows heroism, it shows cowardice. Acting, pacing, immersing you in the churn of combat, it's all there and all as good as you can hope for.
Docking a half star (verging on a whole star) for the times when it decides to rub your face in the central question of risking the many for the sake of the one. Because several times it feels so artlessly done, you fear the actors may just turn to the camera and start lecturing you.
]]>The worst thing I can say about this movie is that there are a couple sections where it drags a little. Beyond that, it's wall to wall goodness.
The protagonists are great at portraying cops with varying and clashing levels of burn-out, while the antagonists are likewise great as criminals with varying and clashing codes of ethics (or lack of one). While the conflict is sometimes personal and tense, the show-stoppers are the shoot-outs. The single extended shot following two cops as they tag-team down a hallway is worth watching the entire rest of the movie for.
]]>Ok, yes, this is a cheesy and predictable action movie, nothing about the plot or action sequences will surprise you. HOWEVER, given the stupidity of the premise, and the fact that the movie PULLS IT OFF, it earns my respect. From both an effects/product standpoint and a plot/script one, having Van Damme play two twin brothers should have resulted in a movie that face-plants in pretty much every respect, and yet it fails to do so.
]]>The last ~5 minutes were something approaching trippy and unsettling. Sadly, the 60 minutes before that was a poorly done Bladerunner fan fic that was so amateurish that I couldn't get immersed at all.
Save this one for the die-hard Japanese cyberpunk fans.
]]>Since there's no action or plot or anything, rating this based on creating a vibe, and hoo boy it does create a vibe. It's incredibly simple and yet succeeds in taking your brain out of your head and slapping it for 10 minutes. I guess that's something I like??
Massive content warning for strobing lights and images. Anyone with sensitivity should be VERY careful.
]]>Just a really fun and well done movie. It's funny and touching and never devolves into sap. If you find any excuse to watch it, take it.
]]>The other reviews had me optimistic for this, but it was a let-down. I wanted something disturbing and over-the-top, and I can't say that it's NOT those things, but mostly it's just tedious. Even the ways it disorients you end up being tiresome. About the only positive things I can call out are the overacting, which is genuinely entertaining at times, and some of the camera angles/close-ups.
If you already like the nutty Japanese cyberpunk genre, go for it. Otherwise you'll probably find yourself waiting for it to be over.
]]>One of my absolute favorite terrible movies. Incredibly bad martial arts film in pretty much every way, and it ends up being one of the funniest and most entertaining things. Among the true joys you'll find here:
- racist Japanese and white characters that are so 2-dimensional, they're almost 1-dimensional
- truly gratuitous use of martial arts sound effects
- grass ninjas
- kung fu using an entire bamboo tree
- grade-school-play level use of fake blood
- killing a man by grabbing his beard too hard
- a man gets up from a fall by RUNNING THE FILM BACKWARDS
- the infamous lavender ninja, complete with Slinky sound effects
- for the end credits, they simply play the Battlestar Galactica theme
If you're not looking for a good movie, I can't recommend this one highly enough.
]]>This is a trainwreck of a movie that transcends itself. It's so bad in so many ways that it becomes more entertaining than it has any right to be. And dropped into the dead center of this whirlwind of horrible script, horrible acting, totally lack-luster action, and ham-fisted nods to the video games, we find Raul Julia. Raul Julia, a talent and true force of an actor, chewing scenery, making the ridiculous outfits seem tailored to him, delivering lines with Oscar-worthy gusto.
Watch this movie, and be amused. Then read all the ridiculous anecdotes from its production, and be amused all over again.
]]>Terrible movie. Stupid effects, meh action scenes, abysmal acting by almost everyone. A couple good gags and lines, but nothing remotely capable of redeeming the whole.
If you want a Luc Besson movie, watch 5th Element instead. If you want a space movie, watch... hell, I dunno, anything else. Go outside and stare up for two hours, it will be more engaging and worth while than this.
]]>A morose and ugly movie in very effective ways. The actors each drive a stake through the heart of their previously over-the-top superhero personas. I'd like to say "This is the superhero movie for people who hate them" but it's still a superhero movie in the end.
The acting is great, the characters are put into a world where super powers aren't adored, they're feared or stigmatized or neglected. And each actor does an excellent jobs portraying exceptional individuals that society has kicked to the curb. The weakness in the movie comes from a ho-hum core plot of "What comes after our generation" and some sections portraying everyday existence in a meandering, unengaging way. YMMV.
]]>This is one of the stupidest movies I've ever seen, and I mean that in the most positive way. Everything here is bad. Plot? Acting? Special effects? Hair? Dubbing? Theme song? Terrible. Is the setting futuristic? Fantasy? Prehistoric? Do the director and cast even know? Why not all of the above!
I dare you to hate-watch this. Don't come crying to me when you end up enjoying it, it will already be too late.
]]>This is not a trivial, throw-away movie and should never be written off as "Muscle-guy shoots stuff". There is a real plot and a meaningful message; Vietnam vet wants to return to "normal life" and America wants to figuratively and literally run him out of town. He did what his country wanted of him, and he's rewarded with ostracism. What comes next is a profound break-down and reversion to those core skills that Rambo was taught: survive, and fight.
Stallone is capable of actual acting, which he proves here and elsewhere (e.g. Copland). He's also surrounded by other very capable actors. Parts of this movie DO devolve into "muscle-guy shoots stuff" but nowhere near enough to prevent it from being an entirely worth while watch.
]]>This isn't kitsch, it's a real movie. Ok, it's also kitsch but still, a real movie.
There's an actual plot, solid acting, and the social background of upstate summer getaways is a genuine and interesting one. In case you've written it off as hunks and dance montages, it's more than that. Also that, but more as well.
]]>The movie makes more sense after reading about what a trainwreck of a production it was. A very strong WW2 movie that has interesting ideas both in the story and direction. Good acting from the main characters, those around them, and the folks they encounter on the Eastern Front. Practically everyone is simply trying to keep themself and their immediate comrades alive. Do what you must, get back to base, possibly go home someday. With the obvious glaring exception.
The ending deflates what could have been exceptional. Any strong resolution is gone, with the improvised final scene simply closing out the movie in a "ing grade" sort of way. Hard to know what the finished product could have been if Peckinpah hadn't spend the entire time in a bottle.
]]>Exactly as dumb as I it being from when I was young. Completely forgettable 80's comedy. A few good lines and gags. If you're doing an Aykroyd or Chase marathon, this is mandatory material. Beyond that? If it's streaming somewhere for free, or on the TV in a waiting room, have fun watching!
]]>This review may contain spoilers.
Marking as spoilers out of an over-abundance of caution, to mask a few specifics, not because the plot is any mystery.
A totally bare and stripped down film. Zero music, almost no dialog, surprisingly little blood or gore at all. No one is doted on or glamorized. Victims are simply victims, perpetrators are simply perpetrators; they could be entirely interchangeable, which is the point. There isn't fear (nobody is terrorized, most don't even have time to react) or even conflict (there are no shoot-outs). There are no cues for good guys or bad guys, no music change to instruct you to be tense. Just mundane people in mundane places, doing the most everyday things, punctuated by a death, before returning immediately to status quo.
This must have been a deeply painful encapsulation of life for many BBC viewers in '89.
