]]>Programmed by Dominik Graf and Olaf Möller for Quad Cinema, NY.
The Federal Republic of is not exactly known as a haven for maverick genre filmmakers—but maybe that’s because audiences and critics were afraid to face the beast lurking below the surface, sensing how grimy and blood-splattered it would be. Dominik Graf, the internationally under-recognized master of modern German cinema, proposes with his two-part documentary A Journey Through German Film (co-directed by Johannes Sievert) a vision of West German film culture that privileges popular idioms, a penchant for a shabbier reality, a ion for the garish and the graphic, and a deep respect for craftsmanship. The Quad welcomes Graf and co-programmer Olaf Möller to share a glimpse of the riches awaiting the curious: from gangster flicks and cop movies to horror films and TV series nuggets to straight-to-video indies, from serious art to full-frontal hokum with heart—it’s all here for your viewing pleasure.

"During the “Adenauer Era” debate raged fiercely over major issues such as ’s alignment with the West, rearmament and the Cold War. The films of the period could hardly remain untouched by these political conflicts and considerations. Had German cinema rid itself completely of the Nazi past? Was it finding a new visual language? Tackling the subject of the Holocaust? Did it hold up to German viewers their own guilt and involvement? War crimes? The many citizens living a lie? The answer to these questions from the young post-war generation was no and, shortly before the close of the Adenauer years, it pronounced that cinema dead.
A look back may well be revealing: what was popular cinema in the young Republic really about, and how did it address its audience? How does the sense of living in the immediate aftermath of the war come across? The aim of the 2016 Festival del film Locarno Retrospective and its accompanying catalogue is to open up this post-war filmography and so focus attention on a beloved, despised and rejected part of German cinema." (http://www.pardolive.ch/en/pardo/pardo-live/today-at-festival/2016/beloved-and-rejected-cinema-young-federal-republic-of--1949-1963?)
]]>"Time again for our annual international critics’ poll of the year’s top movies. This year we asked 163 critics and curators to name their five best films of the year – and the results are a small triumph for diversity (not to mention a lot of treats still to come to UK cinemas over the next few months). Films directed by women make up the majority of the top five, alongside Barry Jenkins’ gay black coming of age portrait Moonlight in second place."
