The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

1964

★★★★★ Liked Watched

I'm still new to French New Wave cinema. I've seen three of Truffaut's films: loved the first (400 Blows), liked the second (Shoot the Piano Player), and was disappointed by the third (Jules et Jim). ★★★★ Liked Watched

Finally got to see a Makoto Shinkai film on the big screen! It did not disappoint! As I predicted, it touched on similar themes as his previous movies, but it didn't feel like a complete retread either. The culmination of Suzume's journey was emotionally satisfying, and I imagine it was extremely cathartic for its Japanese audience. I'll definitely be seeing it again!

The first Bong Joon Ho film I viewed was The Host. This was my second, and now I need to watch his entire filmography.

The basic plot concerns a low-income family conning their way into working for a rich household. Any further description of the plot would ruin the fun. All you need to know is that it's an entertaining and thought-provoking film about class directed by a master. Includes elements of satire and suspense.

Weathering with You

Weathering with You may be hampered by its muddled messaging, entering sappy/overdramatic territory in the third act, and having a polarizing conclusion (which can be troubling when you view it from a certain angle), but I still can't help but love it. My more rational side tells me I severely overrate this film. My emotional side wants to give this 4 1/2 stars. I'll compromise by giving it 4.

I'm not sure I can label this as a guilty pleasure,…
