Watching Night One again. Fuck, what a great show. I realized that this band may have more songs I like than Metallica, and probably will play more songs that I like than Nine Inch Nails. I am beyond excited to see them in a giant stadium for the nearly 30th anniversary of this gig. Sorry to my many UK friends, I am indeed a big American cornball who likes them.

One sign that rock may truly be dead is that Oasis hits so fucking hard. Unapologetic bravado-based toxicity, swagger and other ways to spin their dickheadishness. Even their plagiarism feels like a loving tribute to the guitar rock gods and guides of the last century. Recontextualizing Innis, Bolan and even the Beatles feels kind of refreshing in the era of K-pop, rap’s third renaissance, and metal’s most recent mainstream turn.

This looks great, this sounds great, the performance is great. I’d compare it favorably to REM’s Tourfilm. And of course, this is available on YouTube in HD for free because we live in a digital gilded age.

God, I love this movie so much.

Everyone is so fucking toxic in a very ugly, real way. So many love stories focus on an idealized version of the self, but Nichols is transparent about how manipulative coupling is. You are trying to make someone love you, but you’re supposed to be yourself - but also stay in the moment and not be too serious while also being romantic. Love is not simple.

Law’s character plays the perfect A-Grade fuckboy, with Portman matching him beat for beat with her manic BPD energy. Owen’s character sits in the middle of a venn diagram between masculinity and human neurosis, where Roberts’ couldn’t be more of an accurate stereotype of a very particular type of girl. One of those movies I can return to repeatedly, even with that shitty Damien Rice theme song.

Not the worst of Pauly’s studio movies but still not a good movie. Great casting, great soundtrack, but that’s about it for this proto-Dude Where’s My Car comedy. Could Baldwin and Shore get less likeable?

Whoever wrote these roles for him just didn’t get what made Pauly so fun, so special. Here he’s just a deeply inconsiderate menace whose incompetence is a thin veil for what an asshole he is. Baldwin is less so, but still hard to watch. At least Joey Lauren Adam’s is super cute and the wardrobe design is great.

I think I just don’t like John Fortenberry movies.

Pauly isn’t even really full wiez in this, he’s just some loser who occasionally acts a little quirky. Abe Vigoda as the judge is pretty cool but this just kinda doesn’t have any substance. I don’t know how else to describe it, but it’s just a very thin premise executed in a very lean way.

Even when it sort of picks up steam in its second act as Pauly starts to redeem his character, it’s got the charisma of a made for Comedy Central movie from the 00’s. I mean, it’s fine - but it’s markedly a piece of shit even for a Shore movie. Bottom of this particular  barrel, which is less offensive and more bland and unremarkable.

I love these fucking Olga movies. This one has dialogue and not just a voiceover (which is still very present), which makes it a little less fun IMO - but not by much. Now it’s not just narcotics and prostitution, but also jewel smuggling that she’s into… a little shark jumpy but whatever. The more we try and get any sort of plot depth, the weaker the film gets - but fortunately it’s very self aware and stays light.

This is still a proto-WAVE flick, so if you fuck with that type of thing then you’ll love this. High heels and fishnets and garters, bouffants and wayfarers and satin gloves, and lots and lots of downward angled shots of women in very rigid looking lingerie in various states of minor distress.

You could watch all 3 Olga movies in the time it takes to watch the first Godfather movie, or like - Avatar or something. Are YOU a person of culture?

Shit about how pot is legal now is about the pinnacle of actual material though.

He’s like if you made Jay Leno smug. Some of this feels like if you did an SNL skit about a stereotypical boomer standup bit - sometimes to the point where he needs to repeat the punchline in order to instruct the audience to react.

A hilarious retelling of the American Psycho story using Diddy (or B-City) as the Patrick Bateman character. What makes this more than just a MAD magazine parody and more of a watchable movie is that the narrative is intercut with dramatized scenes from Diddy’s life that we’re all familiar with.

One of the most ridiculous hood movies I’ve ever seen. But more than that, it’s actually really good. It’s well paced, it’s funny, it’s got good rhythm and the acting is that right blend of TV movie grade and actually watchable. Definitely worth the hour it takes to watch it.

There’s just not a lot of material here. It could be the first episode of a podcast or something, sure - but those are supposed to be clunky and awkward. Green does have so many stories, but his need to frame them as a comic puts too many holes in their sails.

Presenting this in a way that highlights the size of the stage and implies a bigger audience than there should be, it really doesn’t help. God, could he have filmed this at a Chinese restaurant or somebody’s house? At a record store? It’s not like seeing Green at the National Arts Center gives him any credibility, nor does it provide some great juxtaposition. Maybe one day we’ll get him in conversation with Nathan Fielder at the 92nd St Y - then we’ll get the special this should have been.

Feels so deeply entrenched in all that was good about early 00’s media. Its tone is balanced between this almost sitcom grade romantic comedy and the dark horror that it’s billed as.

Anna Farris and Angela Bettis are just great casting and the soundtrack and score (in spite of how deeply 2000s it is) just feel perfect. It also touches upon a certain meanness perpetuated against girls that didn’t fit a certain narrow aesthetic framework. Movies like 10 Things I Hate About You did this less viscerally, and it’s nice to see the revenge fantasy in full swing here.

Rambo’s probably his coolest here that he’s been up to this point (barring the first movie of course), and that Goldsmith score and sound design are unquestionably the best up to this point — but there still isn’t quite enough violence here on the top end to make up for the propagandist plot which has aged with a chef’s kiss.

There’s definitely more of Rambo with a machine gun than ever before, and there’s certainly more helicopter explosions though, and once it gets going it’s pretty great. Obviously it’s far from the original Rambo but who the fuck cares? The original Rambo was also filled with corny one liners and Stallone bought the film back just to cut out all the dialogue. This is so well made, with editing and cinematography at the top of the indie film pyramid and casting that feels natural and appropriate — it’s such a bummer that the acting isn’t really that great and the script is spotty. The tone is generally great but it gets weird every now and then and feels like it doesn’t know what it wants to be. It’s the Sound Of Metal dilemma, in the sense that when you get too close to the material it ceases to be fully committed to being cinematic.

Still, it’s an independent juggalo buddy comedy with horror undertones - the bar isn’t super high. The ending goes off the rails; which is nice - I just wish it wasn’t so spotty getting there. There’s just clearly so much potential here, and I look forward to seeing the team behind this make more generally focused movies. All the tools are there to make something truly great.

Kind of exhausting, honestly.

By the third movie the whole schtick with Mike Meyers doing rejected SNL characters making cheap jokes/funny noises and running them into the ground has gotten too self indulgent to enjoy. Even the general story feels lazy, and often like an excuse to flex an obscene budget. I mean, the costuming is still good - but that’s maybe the nicest thing I can say about this piece of shit.

Beyoncé is not great, particularly in comparison to his female partners in previous movies — but the lack of chemistry is just generally abundant in the whole film’s vibe. Just entirely phoned in. Sleazy, fucked up and kinda funny. That said, there are a lot of shots of tits being squeezed so depending on your tolerance of that, your individual mileage may vary.

Hell yeah. Paul McCarthy forever. Between this, Final Flesh and Trash Humpers there was a solid decade of incredible video art that said more with absurdity and aesthetics than be expressed overtly. Even without any message though, Painter is pure chaos in its staging and execution. It’s funny and angry and desperate all at once.

I guess Kanye made an instagram story about this, according to the YouTube comments. Especially funny considering the subject matter at hand here.

This is a very bad, confused movie. Tone is all over the place, performances are all over the place; it’s like someone saw Happiness and thought they could make something similar without any of the talent or skill. The score is just awful too. Fortunately it’s silly enough that it’s not actively offensive to watch.

Not as fun as the first, nor is it meant to be! Still great though, with lots of action and generally great performances from everyone. Some of the homages are a little on the nose, and the pacing isn’t as tight as the first - but it’s hard to stand up to how flawless the first is.

This was the perfect movie for a 15 year old, and watching it instantly takes me back to that age. This first installment absolutely works upon the aesthetics of anime and Asian cinema but rarely stops feeling like a music video in it’s construction. I don’t think this will ever stop being one of Tarantino’s best directorial efforts, even if the second half remains the heady, dramatic one.

My favorite movie, and for sure my favorite love story. Watching the newest 4K with a 7.2.2 setup just highlights how good even the sound design is. An incredible script from QT, music supervision by Trent Reznor, insane editing, psychedelic cinematography and the powerful direction of Oliver Stone. Arguably the quintessential roles for Lewis and Harrelson as well, at least for my generation.

Wild what five years of separation can do. Maybe it was the audacity of it, and it certainly is audacious - but now that the climate of media is so much more online it’s at least more fun. It’s so obviously a spectacularly strange movie that it never feels like anything less than a nightmarish failure of literal blockbuster proportions.

The songs are still fuuuuucking annoying but throwing this on in the background will always exert a vibe of abject weirdness without ever resorting to being ironic or going for cheap thrills. I still can’t imagine active viewing with this, as I’m sure that giving it your undivided attention will still rot your brain.

“And by the way - this table came from a REAL monkey brain restaurant”

I love this silly fucking movie. Could be better than the original Faces just because that one tends to drag and this remains short and sweet with all the effective stuff left in. Even as a kid, watching the Gorgon Video boxed set release, I could tell that they were all just goofing around with this one.

A love story about identity, the fickle nature of sexuality, and the perseverance of love above all. It’s clear this was adapted from broadway, but it’s done so well that it feels like the perfect hybrid. Laura and Edd are fucking terrible and Arnold deserves the world.

If you don’t see the beauty in Humpers then we just can’t be friends. It’s anarchistic, it’s silly, it’s poignant. Just like Gummo transports the viewer to Xenia, Humpers brings me back to being a semi-feral kid in the Florida suburbs during the early 00’s. Life is a beautiful, nonsensical monster. Sometimes you just have to fuck around with trash in all its forms because of the visceral thrill that comes when it hits the ground.
