Yes, the concept is worse, the killer uninspired, and the characters archetypical. But in this day and age, I don't think you can expect a slasher any better than this. This does not mean I liked it, because I didn't, but I don't understand the overwhelming hate for this, especially when refraining from considering its place in the Fear Street franchise.

The kills are mostly good, and the writing is generally better than before. However, the comedic undertones are more prevalent, and it feels very similar to the horror films that came before, in a bad sense. Overall, it's another mediocre experience. I don't know why I was expecting anything more from this franchise.

A decent installment, surely better than the first, and it would be better than the second had it not been as confusing in its casting, where the same actors play other characters, but they still have the same characteristics. The level of writing and filmmaking is also at pretty much the same level, so that’s consistency—good. However, I haven't personally liked any particular installment, so I didn't really like this one either.

Predictable and clichéd, but simultaneously stylistic and enjoyable enough as a slasher. A great coming-of-age film, represented by an environment that feels lived-in and features characters that feel real. Mud has a history that isn't immediately apparent, and as his past endeavors and mistakes are gradually revealed, we see a different side to him. I believe McConaughey excels in roles like this, where he embodies a sense of mystery while still feeling like a fully fleshed-out character, rather than just an archetype. It is the atmosphere that drives the film home; perhaps it’s the southern, almost primitive society, or maybe it’s the way the characters are portrayed, but something breathes life into this film, and I loved that.

From one side, I can see how this could be an interesting insight into a more realistic portrayal of the suffering of Jesus Christ, but there was nothing here that kept me hooked. I hate to say I was bored by something, but here, boredom is really the only way to describe it.

I'm not religious, and I've never been, so these stories have always been just stories for me. Where most religious tales are reflective and engaging, I'm looking for something unique or interesting, and here, the unique aspect is suffering, and the interesting aspect is bloodshed.

From a production point of view, I think it's also lacking, especially when comparing it to the rest of Gibson's filmography. It feels like a play; the sets don't feel real, the characters feel too neatly picked, and another thing I dislike mentioning is that the language barrier doesn't help.

Overall, I don't think this is a great film, and it certainly doesn't resonate with me. However, I think that certain religious people might find it amusingly close to the source material, and others might find it interesting due to its gruesome portrayal of the story, so it isn't completely without merit.

This is no gathering of pious sisters, but a congregation of carnality, where pride, lust, and wrath walk hand in hand beneath the cross. In the shadowed halls of the convent, desire festers beneath vows meant to bind the flesh, and visions become weapons wielded to claim power and control. The sacred is cloaked in sin, and the line between holiness and heresy grows ever thinner with each whispered prayer and stolen touch.

Pride crowns false prophets, lust consumes innocence, envy commences jealous fires, and gluttony feeds a hunger beyond appetite. Wrath ignites in sudden violence, while sloth stays in whispered deceits. At journey’s close, the boundary between sanctity and sin grows thin, a fragile veil worn by faith and frailty alike.

I went into this skeptical, and the beginning didn't convince me, but as it progressed, it just got better and better. I think that the cast here is brilliant, and although they are quite typical, the combination of roles brings something unique to the film without making it feel redundant or unnecessary. However, although I think the concept of having the central characters grow up together and exploring their separate and unique familial relations is interesting, I believe that part could have been executed better. Still, this was thoroughly intriguing, quite memorable, and unique in its typicality.

This could have so easily been just another failed teen film, but it managed to be so much more than that. I'm really happy that more and more films are discussing and exploring the psychology of young people, whether it be through disorders, bad mental health, or something similar. This one manages to do that so well.

Above everything, it is humane; because of the OCD, the main character has to navigate life differently than a typical person would. It all feels so authentic. Sure, the dialogue, upon closer examination, might not be the most authentic, but the atmosphere, emotion, and themes are relatable, whether you have experience in the subject or not, and that's what I love most about it. It's also light on the romantic part, prioritizing the human aspect of it all, and I think that was important for a story like this. On top of that, the editing and directing were brilliant, and Isabela Merced really sold the character.

The best version of a film like this. It makes effective and believable use of a real-life story with not a lot of leeway. I like how each part is implemented.

From his confident, careless attitude—enjoying solitude—to the shocked and hopeful state he’s in when first trapped, until he begins to lose his sanity.

Then the way he starts hallucinating, regretting past decisions, and emotionally breaking down. When he becomes desperate to escape, he is determined to do whatever he can and mentally prepared to do what is necessary.

And then, once he escapes, the way he feels relieved, reborn, and grateful, in a state of mind where he begins to value personal relationships more. It’s a story that is niche, that you’re not going to live through, yet it holds humane themes that are relatable and a character progression that is implemented incredibly well.

The performances play a crucial role in making or breaking the film, and in this case, they mostly made it. This film is brilliant on several levels while still retaining the artistic style of anime that many people appreciate. I usually advocate against this genre, and here it works incredibly well. The concept itself is compelling both thematically and narratively, where the characters swap bodies but do so at different times, allowing them to live a day as the other person as long as they are asleep. This is further complicated by an incident that disrupts their connection.

The animation and visual storytelling are also quite beautiful. There isn’t anything that detracted from my enjoyment, no strange in-world objects that made me dislike it. However, the way the film was written leaves me with mixed feelings. While it mostly works, it includes several exposition dumps in the dialogue, where one character explains concepts or ideas that are meant to be used later. I find this frustrating because it diminishes the film's rewatch value. Still, overall, it's one of the better movies of this style.

Ultimately grotesque and terrifying, yet beautifully humane. It offers a brilliant twist on the Cinderella tale, reminiscent of the original, visceral, grim versions of popular fairy tales, but told from the perspective of one of "the ugly stepsisters." While the narrative may differ significantly, the themes are still there.

In a medium where many original stories currently receive a horror twist, often to disappointing effect, this one stands out as surprisingly effective. It may not be my favorite release this year, but it is certainly great and impactful, especially regarding its themes and body horror, reminiscent of The Substance from last year.

Elvira's relentless effort to conform to the high beauty standards set by her sister, even to the extreme, is incredibly powerful. The use of gore is also spot-on, being both disturbing and unsettling, yet resonating deeply with the underlying themes of the story.

Final Destination Ranked

Finally, Im here, at one of my most anticipated films of the year. I approached it with a bit of skepticism, but I’m happy to say that it largely delivered.

The origin story featuring the premonition is a brilliant concept that is well executed. However, I do feel like the filmmakers have painted themselves into a corner. If they stick with the bloodlines concept, it may become redundant, but reverting back to a simpler premonition might feel too simplistic. It’s a tricky balance to strike.

As for the most intriguing aspect—the kills—the film definitely delivers. There are some extensive and elaborate kills, as well as shorter ones, but there’s always something interesting. I enjoy when the franchise adopts an absurdist sense of horror, where the absurdity of the situations adds another layer, making the kill sequences more fun.

I also have to give a special mention to the legendary Tony Todd. He’s not just one of the highlights of the franchise; he’s one of the most iconic horror actors ever. In this installment, you really get a sense of his character and backstory. Some viewers may love this exploration while others might find it controversial, but I thought it was amazing.

That said, the film isn’t flawless. It feels a bit like the fourth and fifth installments, which makes it somewhat underwhelming for me, especially in of visual effects. Additionally, there seems to be a lack of focus on character depth and writing, which detracted from the overall experience.

In today's horror and comedy films, I'm often worried they will rely too heavily on Gen Z jargon or use social media as a plot device, pushing agendas onto the audience. Fortunately, this film avoids those pitfalls and captures the current era without being overly forceful, which I really appreciated.

All in all, this film was what I hoped it would be, but I feel the need to rewatch it to establish a firmer opinion. As it stands, I really liked it and am looking forward to the future of the franchise.

The final film in this "original" batch of Final Destination films is neither perfect nor terrible. While I feel that the writing, dialogue, and character development are at their lowest here, and there's significantly more CGI than in the earlier installments, it's still a very enjoyable experience. The bridge premonition sequence, the creative kills throughout, the new concept that taking a life allows you to inherit the time that person had left, and the connection to the original film as a "prequel" make this installment quite entertaining. Also, I have always found it unfortunate that there was such a long break between this film and Bloodlines, because I believe you can never have too many of these films.

Yes, it's ridiculous. Yes, it's poorly written. And yes, many of the kills look strange. However, I still have a lot of fun with this film, all things considered. I think the race scene is a good beginning, and the premonition, despite its odd 3D effects, is also quite effective. While this installment is on the weaker side of the franchise, the kills are still quite creative. The main issue lies with the incompatible cast; I don’t hate any of the characters individually, but as a whole, they lack the charm and balance that previous films had. Nonetheless, it's still an enjoyable experience.

Although I prefer the first film chronologically, and I find that much of the series is becoming somewhat redundant at this point. Final Destination 3 feels very close to the original for me and is one of my absolute favorites. Of course, one major aspect that makes this installment stand out is the creative kills. The premise, the premonition, and the cast are all brilliant as well. While I like Alex, the main character from the first film, I think I love this one even more. I also really appreciate the ending. It’s absolutely brilliant, all the way through.

Final Destination Ranked

Although I enjoy this installment quite a bit, I’m the first to acknowledge its flaws. Where the first film had its shortcomings, this one also definitely has its weak points, but it also does just alright in areas where the first excelled. A common reference for why many people prefer this film in the franchise is the log truck sequence, which is a significant moment in the movie. While I agree that it’s an excellent sequence, likely one of the best kill scenes in horror, I feel it sets an unattainable standard for the rest of the film.

I love several aspects of this sequel, including Clear's return, Tony Todd's appearance, the premise (once again), and some of the kills. However, given that this franchise heavily focuses on premise and kills, I don’t think most of these deaths meet my expectations. The film is a bit more gory than the first, but I think that many of the kills, while impressive and shocking, feel somewhat meaningless, particularly since the two main characters make it to the end alive.

The dialogue is also questionable, but I still believe it adds a stylistic early 2000s flair that makes the exchanges instantly recognizable. There’s a bit of redundancy in how they gather information, but I find that mostly acceptable. In the end, I think this film is quite good overall, all things considered, but it fails to live up to the expectations I have for it every time I rewatch it. Still, it’s Final Destination, and even the weaker moments are enjoyable for me.

Now it begins—the countdown to Bloodlines. I can’t believe the anticipation! Even though I’m 100% sure it won’t live up to my expectations, I’m confident it will still be an enjoyable experience. As for the first Final Destination, it’s a certified classic and one of my absolute favorites.

It’s easy for someone who didn’t have this as one of the first real horror films they watched to view it as early 2000s schlock, but that’s not my perspective. With each rewatch, I become more fascinated by it all: the premise, the characters, the kills—really everything. This film perfectly captures the style and feel of the late 1990s and early 2000s, much like how so many films created the 80s as a genre unto itself. It’s a recognizable era, yet a bygone one at the same time.

I was born in 2006 and probably saw this film in 2016, which, in retrospect, isn’t that long ago. However, films like this made me fall in love with cinema, and more specifically, with horror. I understand it’s flawed, and I’m not trying to say otherwise, but it’s still a film that will always be close to my heart.

Nowadays, there aren’t many franchises that interest me as much as this one does. Most franchises have either deteriorated or haven’t released any new installments, which is unfortunate. That’s why I’m so interested in the one. It might not be a masterpiece, but it’s amazing in my eyes.

Exactly what I expected it to be. As an adaptation, it's not bad—the world is vibrant and well-defined. And although I’m not a fan of the game, I noticed certain references and Easter eggs throughout the film. It also stands out as a decent comedy with a good enough cast. However, I believe it loses its way due to the same qualities I praised. While it has some strong aspects, those same elements contribute to an underdeveloped narrative, moments that feel too silly, and an overall disorganized feel to the film. Ultimately, I’m just indifferent to it, much like my feelings towards the source material.

Boring, predictable, and weird. I'm not sure why I decided to watch it, but I definitely regret it. While the performances and filmmaking weren't terrible, there was simply nothing interesting about the story. There are certainly other films with similar twisted themes, like Secretary, that handle the premise better. In the end, this one felt not just stupid and redundant, but also overly manufactured in every way. As a result, I cared less about the relationships, dynamics, and themes in the film than I did about the fly on my wall as I was watching it.

It was far worse than I had imagined. The concept itself isn't half bad, but it fails to commit to any single idea. Instead, it becomes a tedious and stressful journey with no real payoff in the end. The characters also feel overly archetypal and unlikable. I just wanted it to be over!

Of all the disaster films, which range from incredibly terrible schlockfests to genuinely fun experiences, I think this one ranks as one of the better ones, at least in of narrative. While I definitely prefer disaster films that are fun, I also appreciate the more serious ones like this, which focus on characters, heroism, and how society would react to a catastrophe.

Overall, I felt it was good, but not particularly special. The heroism and togetherness aspects were commendable but not especially memorable, and the societal insights felt somewhat half-hearted. In the end, it was an interesting experience and a decent first watch, but it's not one I’m likely to revisit anytime soon.

Sensual, beautiful, and emotionally resonant—those are the qualities I would use to describe this film. It’s incredibly powerful in its exploration of youthful love and sexuality, capturing a sense of reality that feels genuine. The insights into both Emma's and Adèle's lives enhance its emotionally relatable presence.

On the other hand, I would also describe it as perverted, overly sexual, and somewhat redundant from a different perspective. I find myself conflicted, stuck at a crossroads, and that ambivalence is reflected in my rating.

Just know that I didn’t hate it.

I really loved this film. It’s cheesy at times, and if I wanted to be critical, I could find something to complain about, but I won’t. Ryan Reynolds was fantastic in comedic roles like this and in The Proposal, but then something changed in his career.

I love the sentimental feel of the story. I also really like the concept of it being a retelling of how he fell (back) in love with her mother and learned to let go (again)—absolutely brilliant! It’s a really good movie, even if it's less of a rom-com and more of a retelling with comedic moments and themes of romance.

I wasn't expecting a lot from this, but it ended up being quite neat and memorable. It's not bad; it really isn't. However, there was something about the style and atmosphere that was a big turn-off for me. It feels very similar to Before Sunrise and Past Lives, but taking place over a longer period of time. While I didn't dislike it on its own, I feel that this style and editing prevent a film like this from having the breathing room and closure it needs.

The performances all feel natural, which is great. The environment also feels mundanely real, ultimately telling the story of two humans rather than characters. That's where I think it falls short; the mundane quality doesn't evoke the eye-opening and intriguing experiences present in almost every moment of the Before Trilogy. Instead, it feels too real, too boring, and I can't commend that in this particular film.

The ending is very open-ended, and it's unlikely we'll see sequels, so this is just how it ends. Like many indie films, this can be a common occurrence—sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. Unfortunately, it doesn't work here for me.

That said, I believe everything creatively is fine or even good. The cinematography, direction, and writing are all really well done. As a whole, though, I wouldn't say I liked it, which is disappointing to it because I genuinely respect the creative efforts involved.

I think that, while it's certainly flawed in its execution and by no means a perfect film, The Experiment successfully highlights, even in an extreme form, the moral dilemmas surrounding the Stanford prison experiment. It's obvious that the experiment itself wasn’t ethically right, but was it necessary and worth it in the end? That’s where I find the most intriguing questions arise.

For instance, seeing the transformation of characters like Travis and the guards' descent into brutality is both compelling and unsettling. I find the results and parts of the experiment itself to be truly fascinating. However, as a film, it loses some of its momentum along the way. There’s a good cast of characters, but they feel deeply underdeveloped.

Furthermore, although there are some strong performances, like that of Adrien Brody and Whitaker, it can be a bit tedious to watch at times. Also, for a film like this, I expected far more discussion and exploration of morally ambiguous situations—like when the guards begin to cross lines that challenge the sense of right and wrong—yet I just didn’t feel that depth here.

This was quite bad, don’t get me wrong, but it has a lot of potential. It disrespects the original—especially Brandon Lee’s portrayal—by not even changing the character’s name in a completely remade film. The new character also looks more like one of those emo musical artists, which isn’t what the Crow should look like. Furthermore, with the story being completely reworked, there are many unnecessary and almost uncomfortable moments throughout.

Still, I believe that in certain sequences, the film displays cinematic power; at times, it has something meaningful to say, and in some aspects, it does shine. I didn’t hate the visuals, even if they resemble the cheaper Netflix and Prime-type productions. Even with a high budget, the resources seem poorly distributed, making a lot of it come off as cheap when that’s not the intention. Similarly, it’s rather forgettable, especially in ways that the original wasn’t. So while it mostly sucks, it’s not entirely awful, and that’s pretty much my sentiment.

This is essentially a way to explore many of the classics within the horror genre. Since finding a perfect order is difficult, I decided to follow the release date approach, starting with Frankenstein (1931) and ending with In a Violent Nature (2024). The goal is to watch one horror movie each day, sticking to the list to celebrate the season and gain a sense of how horror filmmaking has evolved over time. There are no rewatches in this list, so by the end of the month, I’ll have seen 31 films I’ve never watched before.

I plan to make this an annual tradition. Last year, I did something similar with Spooktober 2023, though the list was less organized and mostly made up of rewatches, which is a big contrast to this year.

  1. Frankenstein
  2. The Haunting
  3. Onibaba
  4. Rosemary's Baby
  5. The Wicker Man
  6. Black Christmas
  7. Carrie

DreamWorks is an animation studio that I have a love-hate relationship with. On one hand, they have some of my favorite films in their collection, but on the other hand, they have produced some movies that I absolutely despised. It's quite fascinating, really. I'd say Disney is probably the only studio that could be compared to them, with really high highs and low lows.

Pixar is one of the most successful animation studios, and for good reason. They have always had a quality to them and there are very few that I'd say that I dislike. In fact, I'd argue that they have released some of the best and by extention some of my favorite animated films. So, I'm definately thankful for not only what the films gave me during my childhood but also what they continue to give me.

The following is a ranked list of all Disney animated pictures, including those of shorts collections. However, the ones that contain shorts will not receive a rating, as shorts and documentaries are difficult to assess fairly since they are quite different from feature films. That being said, I will have them in my ranking, but I think of those as much more objectively placed than the others.
