Come and See

When I started watching this film, I had high expectations. A movie that receives such critical acclaim has to be great, right? However, I felt a sense of caution, fearing it might turn out to be another one of those overly dramatized works that strive for sincerity and power without truly living up to the praise it receives. Yet, within the first thirty-something minutes, all my skepticism was shattered as I grasped just how devastating and perfect this film was…

You know, it's quite hard for someone who watches the amount of films I do to decide which one should be the first of the year. You want to start with a bang, but you also don't want to be predictable or boring. You find yourself asking: what kind of year will this be? Should I start with something arthouse? Something I know I like? Something really old? Or perhaps something I know will be forgettable? Isn't life tough?

This is no gathering of pious sisters, but a congregation of carnality, where pride, lust, and wrath walk hand in hand beneath the cross. In the shadowed halls of the convent, desire festers beneath vows meant to bind the flesh, and visions become weapons wielded to claim power and control. Just brilliant all the way through, and a damned good time everything-wise as well. I just love the atmosphere, style, script, and performances. Really, there is nothing here to complain about, and I don't have much more to say than that.

I'm surprised to say I didn't hate it. In fact, I didn't hate it at all; I actually kind of liked it. I recognize the flaws in the writing and the predictable nature of it all, but the comedy is there, and then there is also the aspect of Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, which should be taken into consideration.

Wow, this still holds up on a rewatch. It's so perfectly and unapologetically 80s (through a 50s environment) in a way that I can't help but ire. The concept is fun, the performances are a bit stale but good nonetheless, and the music segments are unforgettable. It's easy to say something has style over substance, but when the style is the substance, you get this result, and it's glorious all the way through.
